I was listening to this interview with Lux Interior and Posion Ivy.It's a pretty good listen once it it hits the 8:20 mark. Lux talk about the Talking heads sounded like the 1910 Fruitgum Company before getting a record deal and more.

Do any of you guys know who Terry Reid is? I've never listened to his music... and apparently it's my good friend's new girlfriend's step dad haha.

So during this episode Scott jokingly asked Bill what his favorite album of all time is, and after fumbling a bit Bill mentioned Mickey Newbury's It Looks Like Rain. I decided to check it out, and damn this album is incredible!

A quick look at his AllMusic page shows that Mickey has quite the discography, so that will be fun to work through over the next couple months.

Not knowing a ton about the bands of that time and interested to learn more, I searched around and made a Spotify playlist of what look like the best bands/albums of the whole Riot Grrrl movement. This shit is SO FUCKING GOOD. Like, some of the best stuff I've heard in years. Link to the playlist here.
    5/15 - Muse - Mayan
    5/23 - Ceremony - Echoplex (?)
    5/26 - Refused - Roxy
    5/27 - Neutral Milk Hotel - Warner Grand (?)
    5/30 - Spoon - Wiltern (?)

this seems like as good a place as any.

i'm looking for good mexican music recommendations. i'm talking the type of music you'd hear a GOOD mariachi band playing or that has a very soulful female lead singer. i've been digging ana gabriel lately. thank you

That is a great playlist. It makes me sad that they don't have more Bikini Kill but what can you do. I spent a lot of the early 2000s listening/seeing these bands and their neighbors and progenitors (Babes in Toyland, Liliput).

Early Shakira. Serious answer. Not quite on target but, say, Pies Descalzos is a great album.

They're not "Mexican" but they play some really great latin music:

Quita Penas. Saw them playing in MacArthur Park one afternoon and they blew me away.

Do you know if Segnora Dúrcal was in a Pedro Almodovar film? Maybe High Heels or Kika? There's a scene in one of his movies with a chanteuse on stage belting out this beautiful song. Ring a bell? Do you even like Almodovar? Guess I could hunt down a few DVDs at local libraries and make a weekend of it, but hoping you might know instead.

Yeah bmack included it in one of his writeups in that overlooked '70s albums thread last year. I'm not big into country at all and that album floored me.

I saw the Big Star documentary on Netflix and am now listening to I Am The Cosmos, the posthumous Chris Bell album. I am stunned at how amazing it is. This is more flooring than the first time I heard Big Star.
