Well, she does seem to have mastered the craft of the compelling narrative.

"Fun"? Really? It's a brisk, absurd and never-boring three hours, but I have to contend that rather than "fun", I can only view this guy's antics (and the means by which he realized them) as horrifying and despicable. I also walked out of the film unsure of its substance or significance (apart from Leo's performance, which is as good as anything he's done). But the more I think about it, the more I think it may actually be a brilliant character study of the psychology that threatens to destroy this country and/or the world. I need to see it again before I register an official verdict.

Fun. Really. Of course his antics are despicable, but that's what made it so fun. I'll never have the cash nor the balls to do 99% of what he did, so to sit back and watch someone go apeshit like that was a vicarious sort of fun, yes. And laughter equals fun, for me at least. And I was near tears laughing for much of the first half. Like I said though, I'm still not sure it adds up to a whole lot though. Sure, there's some kind of celebration/critique of excess going on that Scorsese is getting at, but it's just not that compelling. And there were two scenes in particular that really dragged the whole thing down.

I've been wanting to see it, wondering if any of you have any thoughts on it...

Hahaha, nope - but nice try…
83 was my soccer number through club & high school.
I know its a football number, but 8 and 3 were always taken.
It just happens to fit right there in my name.

    4. Blue Is The Warmest Color
    5. Upstream Color

Oh fuck. I need to add Blue Jasmine to mine. I knew I'd forget a few. Ugh. Tough year for potential actress nominees. Cate has to win the Oscar, but I loved Amy Adams in American Hustle. (Sorry different tangent).

Damn, yet another year has passed where I saw barely a handful of movies. I fail again.

Seriously? What was great about American Hustle, other than Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence's performances? I found the pacing terrible and the payoff almost nonexistent. I love David O. Russell and think he should definitely have won Best Picture for The Fighter, but I left American Hustle thinking it was just a dull mess. It wanted to be Goodfellas but felt like an overwrought HBO Picture.

The cast was great, mind you, but the movie itself was not comparable to great genre crime/heist films... not even close.

haven't seen a lot of the recent films that have been talked about... there was a clear #1 this year (in a year of incredible films).

    1. Act of Killing
    Berberian Sound Studio
    Bestiaire
    Computer Chess
    Hannah Arendt
    Leviathan
    Post Tenebras Lux
    Room 237
    Spring Breakers
    Upstream Color

Inside Llewyn Davis is pretty damn great. Oscar Isaac is fantastic, music is wonderful, and the cat, well, loved the cat (or cats), too.

I still need to see Blue Jasmine and I love Cate Blanchett overall, but I've been very disappointed with the lack of attention Amy Adams is receiving for American Hustle. All the talk is for Jennifer Lawrence, but Amy Adams is the standout of that film for me. Easily my favorite performance of her career. She definitely deserves more recognition.

Here's my premature top 15 since people are sharing. This order will surely change as I give each film more thought as well as catch more films before years end.

    1. 12 Years a Slave
    2. Mud
    3. The Grandmaster
    4. Inside Llewyn Davis
5/6. the Act of Killing and Why Don't You Play in Hell? (I group these together because I feel they'd make a great double feature)
    7. The Wind Rises
    8. American Hustle
    9. Before Midnight
    10. Nebraska
    11. Frances Ha
    12. Journey to the West
    13. Gravity
    14. Stoker
    15. Pacific Rim

Special mention goes to the documentary, Bridegroom (check it on netflix)

Guilty pleasures: Olympus has Fallen and the Last Stand.

this is the common refrain from folks that went in expecting something some kind of illuminating set of analyses on the shining and ended up completely misreading the film in the process.
