Just because I have inside info doesn't mean I share it. I keep that stuff under my hat for a number of reasons.

That Throne of Blood though does sound pretty great. Nothing like (SPOILER) dying under a hail of arrows in HD.

Anyone watching a bunch of horror films this month? I've been trying.

Really stoked for the Criterion edition of Thief. I remember watching that movie b/c I was reading a screenwriting book and it was brought up as an example of an excellent screenplay.

Also, I work for a book company, and occasionally there will be employee sales where they'll try to sell off inventory nobody wants. They had a bunch of DVD's there. I don't know how this ended up in there, but I got a sealed copy of the Criterion edition of Bicycle Thieves for $1.

Had a somewhat similar experience, although replace "Bicycle Thieves" with "Hard Boiled." It wasn't sealed, though.

I tried to get Harb Boiled on Ebay but it ended up being a bootleg so I returned it.

Let just say some dumb college student needed the cash and didn't realize what he was trading in, or that the store I was employed by at the time wouldn't cash out anything close to what it was worth. $5 later, it was mine, all mine.

The downside is that it was made prior to 16x9 being the standard tv screen size, so the OOP Criterion edition is only a 4x3 widescreen release. Yet somehow, they still manage to have a better transfer than the Fox Lorber or Weinstien Company releases.

I actually found a used copy of that Criterion Hard Boiled as well in a music/movies/games shop years ago, it was like $8 or $10. I checked, and I'm fairly certain it's not a bootleg.

FTR, I'm not like a collector of Criterion DVD's. I'd say I have around 30 - 40 in my collection.

Do you have an extra that's unsealed? I wish I made this purchase before it went out of print.

Nope, I checked after I read your earlier comment and kinda kicked myself because I have seen copies of it in stores for a few months after it went OOP. I should have gotten an extra. After looking up prices online, I'm guessing they aren't in stores anymore.

Already have a space cleared for that Zaitochi box set.

Cannot wait for Thief. Itll be like watching it for the first time since every transfer released since betamax has been absolutely awful.

Oh yeah. I'm hoping to be able to grab that on a half off sale or for Christmas.

Last week I saw Sion Sono's "Why don't you play in hell?" at the Egyptian as part of the Beyond fest with a DVDASA pre-show podcast. This had to be the most bizarre and fun film going experience I've had this year. The podcast was an interesting surprise as I knew nothing about it going in. As for the film? We've been treated to some good, yet sentimental, odes to cinema over the past few years. Why don't you play in hell? is gloriously absurd and one of my favorite films of the year. You could not wipe the smile from my face the last half of this film. Sono is a genius working on a totally higher level than many film makers working today I believe. I'd have to compare him to Miike because of how prolific he has become and how insane his films usually are. However, there is more of a method to his madness. I feel his films have many more layers with much more heart. He is easily, or arguably I suppose, the most exciting film maker working today. Go see this film when you can.

My bro was watching Joshua the other night and I swear I wasn't barely able to look at the screen for half the film. first time thats ever happened to me.

I watched Mama the other night. it was pretty scary. It reminded me of The Ring in both visual style and suspense.

I've watched a lot. I usually just watch one on Halloween, but this year decided to commit the whole month to it.

    So far I've watched:

    Scream 4
    Black Sunday
    House on Haunted Hill
    Zombi
    Troll 2
    Cannibal Holocaust
    The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
The Girl Who Knew Too Much
    The Beyond
    Don't Look Now

and Deep Red tonight, which I enjoyed but had a hard time with due its incredibly slow pacing. Some excellent visuals, and a predictably wonderful score by Goblin, but a lot of the plot made zero sense and I didn't get a whole lot out of it.

Has anyone bothered to see the remake of "Carrie"? I recently watched the original, and I was expecting it to be scarier....
I'm only interested in the remake because Chloe Moretz is so mature and such a badass.

Haven't seen any of the films playing, but I can say I'm looking forward to checking out BIG BAD WOLVES (the film Tarantino calls the best of the year, as well as made film critic Todd Brown eat his own shirt), The Wind Rises (Miyazaki's "final" film), Moebius, Blue Ruin, Her, Inside Llewlyn Davis, The Fake, basically all the midnight movies, etc..

There is way more I'm going to be bummed about missing this year as opposed to the last year.

For horror films, you guys should watch Martyrs.

Tonight is shaping up to be a viewing of Evil Dead 2, if only because my girlfriend has never even heard of it. Also, it's a goofy movie and will counterbalance the downer endings of the last two movies we have watched lately (Night Of The Living Dead, Carnival Of Souls).

I had consumed quite a bit of alcohol while watching it last night, but at the moment I'm convinced Beyond the Black Rainbow is some kind of acid-influenced hallucinatory masterpiece. I've never seen anything like that. It's on Netflix Instant, probably not for everyone but check it out when you have a chance.
