I suppose this belongs here. I have never watched the Michael Bay Transformers movies, but I just caught the tail end of one on cable.

I mean, the design of the robots is completely horrible, right? They all looked kind of alike and it was impossible to tell what was what. Each Transformer looked like a Rorschach test.

And also, I couldn't understand a fucking thing any of the robots were saying. Is that how it is in all of them? what is this? WHAT IS THIS?

They have some Transformers in the 2nd one that talk with very bad Hispanic accents. There is also a giant Decepticon composed of several construction vehicles, with a pair of wrecking balls as the robot's testicles.

As a kid? Religiously. It and Masters of the Universe dominated my formative years. I'm just kind of shocked by the character designs. It's really hard to tell what is going on with any of the robots. Megatron is just like an amorphous silver blob.

    Some quick reviews from SIFF:

Key of Life, directed by Kenji Uchida, is a freaking hilarious black comedy about a depressed, unemployed man who takes on the identity of a hitman (unknown to him) through a bathhouse mix-up. Uchida highly stylizes a few of the key narrative elements -- making fun of the the genres the film locates itself in -- but it doesn't get so self-reflexive and overtly self-aware that it stops being fun. Highly recommended.

Goltzius and the Pelican Company is Peter Greenaway's newest film, about a Dutch troupe of actors/writers/printmakers in 16th century Europe. Greenaway is totally insane, but the film manages to basically recreate the sentiment of the baroque on screen with surprising truth. The film is a sort of cinematic version of in the tradition of tableaux vivants, in which classical works of art are recreated by arranging live people into frozen statues on stage. Except with a lot more nudity, sex, and general obscenity.

What Maisie Knew, directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, follows the young daughter of a dysfunctional contemporary family (parents played by Julianne Moore and Steve Coogan) through the process of divorce. Moore plays the oblivious and self-involved mother with conviction, and Alexander Skarsgard is charming as a sort of bartender-turned-nanny figure, but the young actress playing six year old Maisie steals the show. The film is directed with emphasis on the difficulty of the human condition, and at times the pacing seems off, but overall it's quite touching and charming.

I watched Silver Linings Playbook last night. I've heard people complain that it's insulting to those with mental illness and that it's exploitative and ridiculous. I wonder if those who say so have even seen the film. I was a fan of the whole thing, thought that both Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence had masterful performances and was impressed that they didn't shy away from some pretty dark and uncomfortable moments throughout the film. It felt real at times, and I liked that.

Yeah, i felt like it was actually really empathetic to people with severe depression and other issues and I felt like their dialogue attempting to explain what was happening to them was really well written.

Also, i saw The Great Gatsby yesterday, and as a total unapologetic Luhrmann fan i loved it, and I loved the use of 3D.

could only do 1/4 of Silver Linings Playbook and Gatsby wasn't a very interesting book, so have no intention of seeing any film adaptation.

Last good movies seen were The Hunt (so easy to get steamrolled with negative chatter) and The Artist (didn't like the ending, but loved the dog).

Put this in the birdemic category "Dinotasia" a 2012 film with cgi worse than Terra Nova and terrible scenarios dinosaurs lived through. The highlight has been the duck-billed Dino similar to the brontosaurus who decided to eat some mushrooms, proceeds to trip, and then is attacked by predators while tripping.

A tale of a tail whip to a young allosaurus to mutilate its face, somehow it survived 11 years later to confront its foe...

This is absolutely a must see for no one on your Netflix cue

Tai Chi Zero, best kung fu flick i've seen in a while. And i've gone thru some pretty bad ones recently on netflix. I guess it's a trilogy with the 2nd file, Tai Chi Hero, recently released in NA. Hoping it gets to Netflix soon.

I had only seen Before Sunrise and Before Sunset recently, but Before Midnight was a perfect continuation of the story. I still like Before Sunrise the most, but this comes in a close second.

Bah! I did not like Tai Chi Zero. Not a very good kung fu flick if you ask me.
