All this week, the AV Club has been doing a series of lists of their favorite movies of the 90's. Today, they posted their list of movies they hated in the 90's:

    http://www.avclub.com/articles/our-m...the-90s,86560/

I'm glad to hear that I wasn't the only one left cold by American Beauty.

Was just about to post about the A.V. Club lists. The best of one isn't bad, it has Naked and Safe and a ton of Coen Bros., so I'm cool with them throwing the Matrix and the Blair Witch Project on there.

Yeah, I didn't get them throwing BWP in there. It's someone's student project with a HUGE advertising campaign. Garbage.

Also, Boogie Nights and LA Confidential should have been higher on those Best-Of lists.

I think the only movies on that worst of list that i genuinely hate are The Avengers and The Phantom Menace. The others I either actually like or just think of silly diversions and wouldn't really look at them with much of a critical eye (and these critics really seem to be reacting from the gut in these "reviews" anyway).

The best-of list seems pretty good, though i hate The Blair Witch Project and Deadman (but I understand that I'm in the minority amongst film geeks on the latter).

EDIT: i also find it extremely interesting and refreshing to see Carlito's Way, Eyes Wide Shut, Miller's Crossing, and Barton Fink rated so highly.

I loved American Beauty and Falling Down when I first saw them, but to be fair, I was like 12 and 15 respectively and had a poor grasp on cultural politics and fell instantly for anything that even hinted at dark humor. I'm sure they wouldn't hold up if I were to re-watch them. I completely agree on Chasing Amy and Natural Born Killers though. Such awful pieces of shit.

Everytime I even THINK about Eyes Wide Shut, I hear that piano theme.

Semi-Personal (but not really) Side-Note: I worked at a multiplex that was showing EWS the weekend it opened. That Saturday night, someone on acid, in the sold-out theater watching the movie took off all of his clothes, exited the theater (using the exits near the screen) and hung outside the theater until someone called the cops and they prompty hauled him away. The local paper called the next day to ask about the incident, and to their surprise (and mine), NO ONE in the theater staff that night saw or heard anything about this and would have been no the wiser had the paper not called about it.

I just watched BWP again with my kids, and it does not hold up well. I think my kids were too young to "get" it, if there is anything to be gotten.

The only thing I got from BWP was that apparently someone giving a wall a good long stare is supposed to be creepy, and a possible downgrade in my vision from looking at the eyesore of a movie (if you can call it that).

Blair Witch is all about using your imagination, otherwise it isn't scary at all.

The best of list was pretty good but it is missing Lost Highway off the top of my head...

Hey, if we are going to mention any 90's Lynch films that need a re-examination, let's talk about Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

Dracula is pretty ridiculous, but it really is worth it for the makeup, Costumes, set designs, etc. The entire look of that movie is so fucking gorgeous and amazing.
    EDIT:
Ha, I knew I wrote a little bit about it before. This was from 2010:
I watched Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula for the first time last night. The visuals of the film are absolutely stunning at every level - sets, props, locations, cosrtumes, make up, special and visual effects, use of animals...everything is just fucking brillaint to look at. The visual effects are totally not dated in any way either; you can really tell that a lot of time and money were spent on this thing.

The only problem is that the movie is fucking terrible in almost every other regard. So many absolutely bizarre decisions are made in this movie, and so many moments left me going, "what they fuck were they thinking?" So....yeah.

If you know you like David Lynch just a little bit, straight out just buy the set off Amazon. I got mine for $50, and you get your money's worth. Granted, a large portion of the second season is not very good, but as a whole, it's awesome. Also, the soundtrack to both the series and movie are worth your time, and you can usually get a used copy of either at Amoeba for around $4.

Now I have to go watch Dracula again. I agree that it is incredibly beautiful throughout, althought the story does not make sense, but I love that dracula/beast and Lucy sex scene. I don't really care for Keanu Reeves in that role.

I was also happy to see that the list of "Orphans, Outliers, and Personal Favorites" included Beyond The Mat. Anyone who has seen The Wrestler should see this as either a follow up or as part of double feature.

Once I went to UC Davis I damn near stopped watching movies I was so busy so there is a good 4-5 year chunk of time where I wasn't watching nearly as much as I normally do. This year I've been going through a lot of shows I missed around that time. I marathoned through Fringe, 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Walking Dead, Parks and Rec, The Wire all for the first time in the last year or so. Twin Peaks' time is coming but I have a few more I want to get through that are still on the air before I get to it.

Night and Fog is really short, make it today's goal! :-P

I saw Carl Theodore Dreyer's Vampyr last night at Cinefamily with a live score by Steven Severin. It was fucking magnificent, and probably the first vampire movie I've ever thoroughly loved. The DVD projection was a bit of a bummer, but it was an outstanding experience. I'm basically at the point where I'll see any movie with a live score. And also, after this and Ordet, I need to see every Dreyer film now.

Was it the Criterion DVD at least? Also, you need to see Passion of Joan of Arc if you haven't yet.

Damnit, that was last night? I totally meant to go.

And I love that Barton Fink was ranked as highly as it was. That might be my favorite Coens film.

And also, after this and Ordet, I need to see every Dreyer film now.
Gah. I saw the email and wanted to go... Glad to hear it was great. Wish I lived in LA for showings like this.

I didn't like the AV Club 90s list, but the Top 10 was pretty good, and I loved the fact that they put Goodfellas at #1. For my money, it's probably the most watchable movie Scorcese has ever made - perfect pitch, perfect tone, perfect conclusion. And "Layla" in the credits. Great movie, I rarely turn it off if it's on HBO or whatever.

Saw The Master tonight, went way over my head. The acting was good, but I had a hard time figuring out what was compelling Amy Adam's character to be such a bitch.

So I'm a year late to the party with Kenneth Lonergan's Margaret, but I think it was one of the finest movies I've seen in quite some time. It would make for a great double feature with Gus Van Sant's Paranoid Park.

Malick sighting! It's kind of like trying to spot Waldo, but he's briefly visible off to the left, he's wearing a large brimmed hat. He was filming Rooney Mara pretending to play with the Black Lips. I guess Ryan Gosling was there too, but isn't visible on camera.
