Yes, tension city! That man gave us several of the finest American films. He can almost be forgiven for having a daughter who wrote the screenplay to Rachel Getting Married.

Just watched Gladiator for the first time...

Eh. I dunno. Joaquin put in a great performance. Russell was alright. I just thought the movie was so overwrought with bullshit and unnecessary fluff that the important bits run so fucking fast on the screen. The long, drawn out battle scene in the beginning lasts like 45 minutes and makes the important interactions between Maximus, Proximo, and Commodus seem inconsequential and rushed. These are the conversations and scenes that determine the plot of the entire movie and because of all the other bullshit swirling around they don't seem to carry any weight.

Similarly the ending seems ridiculous and anticlimactic. I was just very surprised at how much I disliked this one; it gets universally good ratings/reviews. Am I crazy/alone?

It is definitely not a "timeless classic," but I do think you would have felt differently had you watched it 14 years ago. It has suffered greatly from so many other huge epic movies, Lord Of The Rings, Game of Thrones, etc now having been released. I have seen it a bunch of times and rewatched it recently and still found it extremely entertaining.

This is pretty much how I describe Before The Devils Knows You're Dead to people. It's one of the most unpleasant movies I have ever seen. Extremely well-acted and brilliantly executed, but it made feel completely sick and I never want to see it again.

Gladiator = Braveheart in a coliseum. But it gave all the bros who hailed Braveheart as the greatest movie ever something to chew on. Living in San Diego 14 years ago, I saw this sentiment constantly.

I think Gladiator's opening battle scene was included in such depth due to the historical significance of the Germanic peoples' involvement in the fall of the Roman Empire.

Gladiator does not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Braveheart.

Absolutely. They're handomely produced entertainments, but I'll likely never watch either again for the rest of my days. And even if Braveheart were superior in every other way (which it's not), at least I can think of Gladiator without having to consider Mel Gibson's disgusting, throw-the-f*****-out-the-window sense of humor.

Braveheart is a classic. It won best film, directing, and cinematography at that big award show they do in Hollywood.
I can care less about that award show that they do. Braveheart made people feel. As much as I admire those esoteric avant-garde films I know you all cherish, I find something very valuable in a film or any peice of art for that matter which is able move the masses. Even if it is a bit sentimental, humans are sentimental animals.

It's been a long time but I do remember 12 year old me laughing his ass off at that scene and I refuse to apologize for that. Braveheart had a better script, better direction, better cinematography, better editing and now that you point it out, better humor.

Even the transcript of that scene is funny:

Longshanks: Who is this person who speaks to me as though I needed his
    advise?

Prince: I have declared Philip my High Counselor.

    Longshanks: Is he qualified?

Philip: I am skilled in the arts of war and military tactics, sire.

Longshanks: Are you? Then tell me, what advice would you offer on the
    present situation?

(Longshanks kick's Philip out the window)

    Philip: AAAHHH!

When I was young I wanted to make films like Stanley Kubrik but now I want to make films like Steven Spielberg. Heartwarming films for the whole family which inspire the imagination of young and old alike to think about nature and worlds of possibilities, which also exhibit aesthetically traditional themes from the originally composed score the moral message of the story.

Saw the new Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy and thought it was extremely good. Might be the modern day Star Wars. I didn't know anything about it before going to the preview and thought it would be horrible when I saw a raccoon was one of the main characters but I was way off. Lots of action, humor, a good enough storyline, and visually stimulating. Highly recommend to see in 3D.

Also saw Lucy and while it started off with promise it was laughable bad. Afterwards I felt like I had devolved.

I am genuinely curious why you thought this. What about that would make it horrible instead of quirky, interesting, funny, etc?

Nothing will ever be "the new Star Wars." There isn't a "new Radiohead." Comparisons like that are extremely near-sighted.

You're gonna be hearing the whole "this generation's Star Wars" saying a lot with Guardians Of The Galaxy. Such comparisons aren't necessary, though I think it's getting kicked around alot since the film works extremely well as a stand alone Sci-fi flick.

I really loved it. The action was great, it had a surprising amount of heart to it, and it was actually extremely funny. It doesn't take itself too seriously either, which most comic book inspired flicks do now a days.

Another aspect I really liked about it was how fast it just dives into the movie. It doesn't linger too long on the beginning, it very clearly introduces the characters and their motivations, and gets on with it.

It's really, really fun. You should watch it and stuff.
