I watched Ben Wheatley's A Field in England tonight. It took a little while to get going, but was really incredible once it hit its stride. There's a scene of what looks like it's called "stroboscopic editing" that is absolutely jaw-dropping. It'll be interesting to see reactions to this one, I'm sure they'll be greatly divided. I haven't seen Wheatley's debut, and this one is really fantastic but I still think that Kill List remains his best and most subversive statement to date.

"According to a February 2012 study conducted by the Los Angeles Times (sampling over 5,000 of its 5,765 members), the Academy is 94% white, 77% male, 14% under the age of 50, and has a median age of 62." After Michael Clarke Duncan's tragic passing I'm pretty sure the only remaining black Academy members are Denzel Washington, Halle Berry and Forest Whitaker, but I could be wrong.

Not really. The question isn't whether Kubrick faked the moon landing or not, the question is whether the imagery used by Kubrick was designed to create that illusion, or reflect on that possibility. If you take the logical "no way they faked it" bullshit out of it, it's completely obvious that he was strongly alluding to the fakery.

But I wouldn't go that far. There's a lot of other factual support for the argument that he actually did fake the moon landing, based largely on the tech his special effects designers used for 2001 vs. the actual moon footage. Just google it, the dude from Room 237 has reams of writing based on this stuff.

watched The Wicker Man (1973) and, other than Brit Ekland's gyrating dance scene and the films' impressive sacrifice finale, it wasn't all that compelling as a whole. Evidently it caused some fear in folk back then and was classified as a "horror". The director attempted a companion piece, The Wicker Tree in 2011, also marketed as a horror film but the critics panned it as too camp.

The alternate universe of common decency and mother-fucking good taste, that's where.

Though I may be wrong (alert the press) about Cate now that that fucking cooz Mia Farrow is slinging shit about Woody, and consequently hurting Cate's chances at taking home a well-deserved Oscar.

So my babysitter forced me to watch Liquid Sky when I was but a tot. This probably is where it all began ...

Touche. My brother and I watched it. That was my blooming. But then I was pruned with the Cremaster Cycle. Hahahah and oddly enough I'd throw The Gate in there too.

Totally remember that gem. It's a wonder that everyone who grew up in the 80s isn't completely messed up.

Anyone seen Enemy, the new one from Jake Gyllenhaal and Denis Villenueve? It's bizarre, uncomfortable and consistently intriguing in a way very few movies get. Gyllenhaal plays a history professor who sees a movie and is amazed to find his doppelganger. He tracks the guy down and things get odd quickly. I really dug it, even though it was incomprehensible at times.

Bmack, I actually watched Enemy last night at a friend's place. Loved it though I think overall I prefer Denis Villeneuve's recent film Incendies. I never saw Prisoners, the other film he made with Jake Gyllenhaal. Did you?

Hey buddy! I liked Prisoners quite a bit. It's a kidnapping field with some uncomfortable but great shifts in morality that happen throughout, and I thought everyone did an excellent job with it. I was very pleasantly surprised as I knew nothing about it going in.

Apparently Lee Daniels wanted to direct Prisoners and cast Oprah as the character that Melissa Leo played. Really, really fucking glad that didn't happen. Can you imagine?

Help me, was watching a few minutes of Rocky IV on tv, anyone know why one or two extras in the Apollo funeral scene are blurred out to the right of Stallone? So weird. It was on CMT, were there maybe too many black people on the screen at the same time or something?

from what I remember, it was some optical fuck up on behalf of the camera trying to focus on too many things at once.

From what I can find online, it has been that way since the theatrical release. i can't find an actual explanation of it, but Grandma is probably correct.

What I really love about the new Godzilla movie is that the story isn't focused just on Godzilla. It centers around a search and rescue mission while Godzilla is stomping the shit out of San Francisco. Godzilla isn't portrayed just as giant monster terrorizing people, he (she?) is a force of nature, like a tornado or a hurricane. Nothing man made is going to stop it.
