An awful trailer does not an awful movie make. A trailer is designed to appeal to the people on the fence, not the hardcore film fans who will watch it just because they want to have an opinion.

By the same token, there are scads of shitty movies with strong trailers.

Heh. I actually just watched Following for the first time on Instant this past week amidst my sick time movie marathons and thought it was pretty unremarkable. There was a lot of room to explore deep issues about voyeurism and invasion of privacy and other skin crawling subjects, but instead it was just a bunch of lamely executed plot mechanics leading to a groan worthy twist. At least Godard's Weekend is finally getting the Criterion release it deserves.

The Phantom Menace had a great first trailer. Hell, the trailer itself was so popular, I was even at a concert and it was shown before the band (That band being Reel Big Fish... yes, it was definitely 1998).

Anyway, I agree with you on that print. It was comforting to see the cue points (or cigarette burns, for those of you who remember that part in Fight Club) on the print. Looked amazing. Fearless performances from the leads. I agree with everyone about seeing it a second time. I also thought the more recent print ads for the movie kinda gave away the ending of the motorcycle scene. I got the feeling that a lot of people in the audience were either stunned or disappointed, like it was going to be the ultimate scientology take-down or Boogie Nights: the Prequel, or both.
Ahhh man. Well at least you know how I look to say hello another time when there is more time. It was not a cool situation on there part. I know the arclight is prompt but if people that got there on time are still having trouble being seated, and in such quantities as the dome theater, they need to slow down a bit. Really silly. My family and friend barely made it into our as the person was introducing it (which I also thought was unprofesional compared to most "OMG ITS PLAYING IN 4 THEATERS YOURE HERE NOW LETS GO" psshh) Parking was also a bitch that day. Everyone was at the movies since it was 100+ outside I suppose.

I fucking hate trailers, even when PTA is cutting them. But you have to remember they arent made for the cinephiles who will see something just to have an opinion. They are for those on the fence and the motorcycle shots definitely look inspiring/powerful etc.

Its a shame it was framed by the whole scientology aspect and Tom Cruise PTA friendship bit. A few people have mentioned that to me and Ive tried to steer them away from that expectation.

A tough movie for me 3 days later now. I dream of making something of this stature someday but I need to figure out what exactly it captured first.

I've actually never even heard of this trilogy but a few people have shown a lot of excitement about them so I'm looking forward to checking them out. It will probably come out after the holiday sales but I will pick it up as soon as it's on sale.

As an aside, after watching The Master on Saturday afternoon, we came home and watched Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Talk about a complete polar opposite in terms of acting styles! Still, I found it very charming and after so many years on this earth, I can finally see Marilyn Monroe's appeal (outside of, you know, physical attributes).

I love how Rex Reed references the Brown Derby, a place that's been closed for quite awhile I recall, which speaks volumes of how relevent a review by Rex Reed ever actually is.

They are available on shitty DVD releases from MGM. I've seen Koyaanisqatsi and it's mind-blowing.

More accurately, he took an unwarranted shit on Charlie Kaufman, David O. Russell, Wes Anderson, et. al. He libels this same group of filmmakers literally every time he reviews a movie by a relatively-young director that isn't some lame piece of middlebrow shit. Basically, if you're under 50 and you're not Alexander Payne, this is what your review will be.

Never to be outdone by Rex Reed, check out Armond White's review. You guys, the real visionary is Paul W.S. Anderson.

    DO NOT
Watch [REC]3 Genesis. The co-director of [REC]2 ditches the Handicam and turns one of the best modern horror franchises into a goofy religious horror-comedy.

    DO
Watch Sleep Tight. The real director of the [REC] series turns in a surprisingly effective thriller about an apartment manager who just can't stand to see his tenants happy.

I said this on Twitter earlier - my favorite part of Armond's review is that he highlights the name "Paul Thomas Anderson" as some impossible annoyance...in a review that doubles as a blowjob for Paul W.S. Anderson.

Andersonís images vivify the entire expanse of the wide screen to keep your eyes busy surveying the breadth of action
The exact opposite of what one wants to do as a filmmaker? Is this writer 16?

Paul WS Anderson and Len Wiseman do the same thing: make crap movies for their hot wives to star in and have a gun in each hand. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if they are the same dude. On top of that, the Resident Evil and the Underworld movies look the same to me, outside of maybe the difference in color palettes.

I've always suspected that Armond White's writing is intended to function as performance art. By contrast, I think Rex Reed simply has the most presumptuous, contempt-driven taste of anyone who's ever sat through a film.

I have had the distinct displeasure of meeting Rex Reed a few years ago. He's just a bitter old queen who probably still holds grudges over his own failed career as an actor.

Saw the Master in 70MM at Landmark - they went off with the cigarette burns in that film! Some parts felt like it they were dragging their feet, but overall there are two main themes in this movie to really explore: Bromance and Filipinos: Are they really that scary when 3-5 are chasing after you?

Hats off to the set design and art department for the time period, I know PTA loves his accuracy of time periods, the department store model makes one question when that job was dropped for manequins.... I'll definitely want to watch this again, Joaquin Phoenix is the man, so chaotic, lonely and dim all at the same time. I really felt when he was near what he desired, the beast within settled down, only to find another reason to lash out at the world. His character and the rest of the cast really reflect PTA's skill as a director. Amy Adams' performance is one that many may overlook, but I felt every time she had a moment on screen she gave a portion to the rest of the cast, but when she had her moment, she fucking made it known. The bathroom HJ with PSH. That's a fucking wife.

I know I'm not the only one who enjoys having a director like this apart of our generation. Definitely a film maker who gives his audience some material to digest.

Any one catch a showing of the Raiders of the Lost Ark rerelease? Its showing at the AMC here in a regular theater digital projection but I see its elsewhere in the liemax screens? But not at the true imax like at rave or citywalk? Weird and confusing. Anyways, worth going in some fashion im sure?

I saw Raiders on the big screen in the late ninties and it was awesome. Since it wasn't filmed in IMAX, I don't know if it would be worth while seeing presented in that fashion.

Meanwhile, the blus are out, and I hear they look really great, especially Raiders, since they did a new restoration and 4k transfer on that one.

I believe it's the same restoration being projected in theaters for Raiders but yes I don't get the point of putting it on the iMax screens of any size. Ive never seen it on the big screen so I guess I'll go check it out.

I think you could wait for a smaller theatre to screen it? The theatre off Beverly/La Brea has a lot of awesome screenings ALL of the time.

The Aero in Santa Monica WAS going to screen the new transfer of Raiders last month, but it got cancelled. I am guessing the wider theatrical re-release had something to do with that...

I'm old enough that I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark on a big curved 70mm film screen in its original release. I remember Toht's spectacles looking all creepy and kinda stretched due to the curvature of the screen on the side.

I loved this movie. Best part is my daughter wanted to attend all four films on one ticket at the local AMC - and skip the 4th movie. Good kid.
