We've been fracking here in Alberta for 60-odd years now, so its with some bemusement that its become the new boogyman.

I think the difference might be that the population densities in the areas where it's happening in the northeast.
and yes it is in large part a new boogyman.
Note that this case involves fracking as shallow as 1600' which is unusual.
