While he was never an excellent singer, he was in decent voice on his first record, Closing Time. Great jazzy piano ballads. Can't stand anything the man put out after 1971 or so, but I'm quite attached to that record.
(Not trying to sell you on him...that was my roundabout way of agreeing with you, except for his first couple of records. Heh.)

I hated MBV on record and fully expected to hate it live...just louder.

Contrary to the opinion of others on this board, I really don't think there's anything to "get" about MBV. I like them, but not because of any nebulous concept. I like the noise they make. Others don't. It's all cool.

I didn't really get MBV when I first head them, which was now 2 1/2 years ago. I liked "Only Shallow" for the same reasons I liked Smashing Pumpkins. And that was it.
And now they're one of my 10 favorite bands of all time. I definitely think they're something that grows on you, even if you like them when you first hear them. Every month that's gone by since I first heard Loveless, I like it better and better, and higher and higher it goes on my favorite albums of all time list. I've come to the point that I'm absolutely obsessed with every individual track except "When You Sleep" and "Touched", which are both still great themselves. And then about a year ago I discovered Isn't Anything and all of the EPs.... and just on and on it goes with them and me.
I agree with you to a certain extent, Sally. I just hate when people jump all over a person for not liking a band, saying they just don't "get" it. If I don't like a band, I plain old don't like the band. No amount of explanation of the band's history and/or influence on other artists will make me like them. Respect them? Probably. Like them? Nah. That's why I try not to give people too much shit for not liking MBV.
Couldn't agree more. I have days where I listen to nothing but Closing Time.
Some bands require a good jumping in point, and I think MBV is definitely one of those bands. Just because Loveless is their most revered work, it doesn't make it an ideal starting point. I think the You Made Me Realise ep is a lot more accessible. It still has their trademark sound, but has a lot more in common with your typical 80's alternative rock. Still, MBV are a band that makes you listen to music in a new way, which is part of what makes them great and part of what makes them difficult to appreciate. To be honest, I didn't fully understand the obsession until I saw them live. Now I'm hearing things in Loveless I never noticed before.
Lil Wayne, or whatever that fuckers name is. Fall Out Boy, Panic At the Disco, AFI. I admit to really liking Conor Oberst-related music, but...what's the big fuss over? Radiohead, AC/DC. The Ting Tings. Evanescence...and no matter how much of their music I've listened to; I just can't get into Led Zeppelin.
I could go on, but I'm feeling really shallow writing this, haha.
also, Franz Ferdinand. Like 'em, but regardless. Placebo and Muse. Modest Mouse. NOT to say I don't enjoy their music. I mostly dislike the bands or musicians or shit makers whatever you want to call them that I listed first.
and Death Cab.
Alan McGee evidently can't stand MBV.
"i wish i had never signed my bloody valentine unlistenable shite
i am in the midst of the creation film getting made by danny and steve and it made me realise i never even liked them even at the time.30 months to make one album[???] and the guy was always a 100% complete dick from day one.i blame the drugs i was on if i had been sober i would have never signed the guy.
i went on manage mogwai for a few year's who i do wish had been on creation records they have melody and are truly everything mbv are not mogwai are truly great, all kevin shields has these days is a super sized pa system to shock people into thinking it was good and he knows this fools people.he knows it is a nostalgic trip.there is no new album coming kiddies, mogwai/ride are just much better bands.
danny o connor wants them to be in it i am really happy it looks like they won't be[come on!!!!!!!!!!!] they were a hype then and unlistenable shite now..alan"
He cracks me up. Pissed off because they cost him money that Oasis made back 10fold? Probably.
Thievery Corporation.
The reality is, the only thing these twats have going for them is a cool name.
