Default The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) Watch Thread

Probably a terrible time to start this thread, but given that quite a few of us seem to be interested in the inner workings of SCOTUS and given that we seem to have quite a few lawyers and law enthusiast on here, what say you we dedicate a thread to discussing SCOTUS - issues before them, issues to likely be before them, case law, major decisions, what exactly they're wearing under those robes, when (Dear God, WHEN??) Scalia will finally croak.

So, while last week's momentous decisions on Obamacare and marriage equality were ones for the history books - and rightfully celebrated all Pride weekend long - could it be argued that this week's Arizona State Legislature v. Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission decision will have a greater, longer-term effect on the political landscape? That's actually a question. I'm not sure if it's the case. Will this decision have an impact beyond Arizona (and, likely, California)? If it will, it could be the beginning of the end of partisan gerrymandering and the start of a (slightly) more equitable and representative voting system in the US. And that could be huge.

Also, gonna say it again, as much as I adore the Notorious RBG, I wish she would quickly announce her retirement and give President Obama enough time to get a 40-something, fit-as-a-fiddle liberal appointee through the Senate approval process. You can cry ageism and sexism, but I still think that, given her age and less than spotless medical history, her decision not to retire is plain selfish.

Reason #1: Why was the parenthetical acronym for SCOTUS necessary in the title? It only serves to make the thread title longer.

Well, generally, when introducing a topic it's acceptable to spell out the full name of an organization before the first use of an acronym. But, clearly, you'd like to dispense with formalities.

SCOTUS is overrated and mainstream; I like the indie jurisprudence percolating in the lower federal courts, and even some of the state courts.

Not only that, but the T in SCOTUS and POTUS is excessive as well. Nowhere else do we represent THE in our acronyms.

Reason #2: The entirety of board members that would ever post in this thread have already done so.

I could post in here. I'm happy about the ruling protecting pregnant women from discrimination at work.

    call me IOTUS

i still wonder how much the arizona ruling will really help, given our political landsacpe, but it's a start.

voting culture is what needs to change. many people don't vote. i had a friend who wanted to open a marijuana dispensary who didn't even vote, even though the law only passed by a small margin because of mail-in ballots. it should be a national holiday to vote. but different subject entirely.

i also wonder what the future court will look like. i think i heard something on npr about one of the dissent saying something about the makeup of the court not representing america because the judges are mostly from the east/west coast and not the midwest. i thunk anyone who makes it that far.in their career is a special person anyway who doesn't really represent the "average" person.

i also don't see how civil rights should be a state issue instead of a federal one.

What they should do is make a law that you HAVE to vote

Civil rights shouldn't ever be a state issue, because civil rights shouldn't differentiate based on where you are living within the country.
