AND we are playing a set of covers tomorrow night at CINEFAMILY for Lance Bangs BDAY. Mike Watt, Bradford Cox, Dean Spunt, Randy Randall... doors at 8pm..
The Lance Bangs part of the night was incredible, with tons of unreleased videos (Elliott Smith doing a Big Star cover live and solo, Neutral Milk Hotel rehearsing in 1998 in a garage and getting busted by the cops, No Age/Black Flag at MacArthur Park, Sonic Youth doing Silver Rocket during the Daydream tour, documentaries on Arthurfest and Slint that were incredible in the depth of stuff captured as well as the quality) but even it couldn't hold up to the four song set from these guys. Watt on bass and vocals, Dean on drums, Randy and Bradford on guitars and Bradford sung the last one. According to Bradford after the set, they barely rehearsed it and had a goal of letting Watt lead the first three and Bradford lead the last. They were incredibly intense and loud and loose, and just SO. DAMN. GREAT. I could have listened to them play all night. Instead, they did a four-song, 30 minute set of covers. They were:

    The Anchor (The Minutemen)
    Funhouse (The Stooges)
Do You Want New Wave Or Do You Want the Truth? (The Minutemen)
    Cortez the Killer (Neil Young)

Randy shredded the fuck outta the Minutemen songs, and Watt looked ecstatic playing them. He doesn't EVER do their stuff live, so I was in tears for both songs. The Stooges cover was super duper loud and chaotic. The version of Cortez was at least 15 minutes long and the second best version of the song I've ever heard (after the version on Live Rust.) Bradford played Neil, doing both the vocals and the lead guitar parts. He told me that he was playing a thrift-store guitar that he'd bought right before the show and that it kept going out of tune on him, but I thought it really fit the sound of the song.

Oh, and I asked Bradford about performing with Jandek. He said that it was a really weird show. Jandek had him start the head of each song, and John Fernandez from OTC was supposed to be the person to bring it to a close. He described it as jazz-like.

Naw. Some of the clips were already released, but lots of them were just his favorite things from his past that hadn't been screened in awhile. The Neutral Milk Hotel footage was great, but he said that it wasn't something the band was interested in releasing. Interesting thing with that: Mangum kept saying at the start of the video that they were getting ready for the last Neutral Milk Hotel tour. Sounds like even back then he was planning on bailing on the project.

But the only thing he said was going to potentially have a release soon was the Slint documentary. That will be fantastic, as the interviews he showed were just fantastic, and there was lots of practice footage and parts of early live shows, both from Slint and their seed bands, Maurice and Squirrel Bait. Plus a great anecdote from Steve Albini about how Britt Walford stayed in his house once in 1990, locked himself out, kicked the door in, boarded it back up with a 2X4 and just came and went the rest of the time through a window. Albini said he described the event to David Yow of the Jesus Lizard and remarked, "Don't get me wrong, he's a nice guy, I like him just fine, but he's a mouth breather." Awesome.

The only reason I'd ever want to know set times for those two would be to avoid them at a festival.

The Flaming Lips put on the best show I've seen from them yet. The new songs were executed brilliantly and they played a slow version of Ego Trippin' at the Gates of Hell. Satisfied.
