I get that... but I'm honestly glad that they at least draw a line there... since they can't seem to figure out that their balcony should be ticketed separate from the floor. And really... when you're pushing 40 and have a family, it becomes more and more difficult to get to a show early enough to ensure you're one of the first entering to get access to the floor. So scoring a pit ticket always ensures I'll have as good of a time as possible in that shitty venue.

Good call on Rimac, I forgot all about that hole.

How can you leave The Casbah off that list?! Have you not been there?

I love the Casbah. Been there a ton of times (FlyLo (recently) and Jagwar Ma (coming up)). Good crowds and energy and they get some really good bands to go through. My only *minor* gripe is that the sound is not as good as the other 3 venues.

Nice. That FlyLo show was definitely the best I've ever seen him. Jagwar Ma sold out before I could get a ticket, unfortunately. I find the sound there to be pretty great, but I always post up on the side of the stage, so maybe the acoustics are different combined with the stage monitors? Or my ears are broken (totally possible).

It is self evident that the best venue in SD is the Belly Up. All others are competing for second place.

I really like venues that still have a box office I can order tickets from directly without paying Ticketmaster's outrageous horseshit "convenience" fees.

The Casbah is supposed to have a box office set up soon, and they use Frontgate so the fees aren't too bad.

My cons for the Belly Up are:
    Too bright
    Too pristine
Too many TV screens and tables/seated areas
Too far out of the way

The biggest pro is the shark above the bar.

Belly Up has pretty terrible sightlines (for half the venue) and a meh crowd every time I've been there. I'd take Casbah or Soda Bar over it any day.

Sometimes you get band members who think they're way funnier than they actually are making jokes about the shark though. That perennial favorite "Oh my god, a shark, everyone get out of the water!"

Chipotle is almost as ubiquitous in San Diego as McDonald's, I'm sure most venues are reasonably close to one.

And yeah, the Belly Up usually does get a blah crowd. People were heckling GYBE the last time they played there.

Hey, I was at that show!

The only other Soma gig I went to was at it's former location under the freeway. Faith No More on the King For A Day tour.

On another note, did anyone end up pulling the trigger on Splash House tickets?

We took our time deciding but eventually got Saturday tickets and a cheap room at the Palm Mountain Resort and Spa right by the Hard Rock.

Oh no, only 9 days to work on my tan and abs.

the group will see the addition of Butthole Surfers' guitarist Paul Leary and bassist J.D. Pinkus. The group will be releasing their new record Hold It In on October 14, the first record they've done as a quartet since their 2010 album The Bride Screams Murder.

Good show by the Bunnies tonight. Observatory was sold out and uncomfortably hot. One of the subs went out early and most of Bed Bugs and Ballyhoo sounded like someone was beating on a wet piece of cardboard with a stick. There was a huge overload of bass early too. Horribly mixed show. I needed Will Sargent to be at least twice as loud. And I really wanted The Back Of Love somewhere in the set. Still, they played Never Stop and a ton off Crocodiles, including Villiers Terrace and All That Jazz.

Shabazz Palaces were fucking spectacular tonight. The new material sounded great, they played nearly all of Black Up, the sound was probably the best I've heard at the Roxy, the temperature was much more pleasant than the Cloud Nothings show a few weeks ago, overall an unusually wonderful night at that venue.
