SOMA is pretty ass but I think in the debate of "worst San Diego venue" it's a real toss up between that and the neighboring Sports Arena. Made the mistake of going to Sports Arena once for Wrex The Halls because I wanted to see Florence & The Machine. Never again. Not even if they were paying me.
At least the Sports Arena has food and alcohol.
Here's what Xiu Xiu announce awhile ago.
I've seen some recent setlist and it's ten tracks from Angel Guts.Which to me personally kinda sucks because there's a bunch of other songs I want to hear but then again I became on board with Xiu Xiu a little late and super excited to see a less abrasive and full band set.
Just cause you guys need air conditioning, doesnt mean you shoudl slam SOMA that badly. Shame they cant do more shows at Spreckles.
I remember seeing the Sahara Hot Nights open for the Hives back in like 2004 or 2005. good show but hot as fuck.
Muse in 2006 was ridiculous. Tallguy can vouch for that one. Traffic coming down was horrible due to all the nerds going to comic con, though.
I didn't think life could get much better than Nick Cave performing Stagger Lee, but then they closed the set with Papa Won't Leave You Henry. Jesus Christ. That's one of the best shows I've seen all year.
Rimac is the worst. It's a basketball court with bad acoustics. Soma is pretty bad too.
Balboa Theater, SDSU Open Air Theater, and Belly Up are the best games in town.
My first show was at Spreckles. EMF! hahaha

It is self evident that the best venue in SD is the Belly Up. All others are competing for second place.
I really like venues that still have a box office I can order tickets from directly without paying Ticketmaster's outrageous horseshit "convenience" fees.
The Casbah is supposed to have a box office set up soon, and they use Frontgate so the fees aren't too bad.
My cons for the Belly Up are:
Too many TV screens and tables/seated areas
Too far out of the way
The biggest pro is the shark above the bar.
Belly Up has pretty terrible sightlines (for half the venue) and a meh crowd every time I've been there. I'd take Casbah or Soda Bar over it any day.
Which San Diego venue is closest to a Chipotle?
