Legit headliners for sure! Respected and talented artists who could still ( If Bowie were still alive of course) headline today. So help me understand why we have Beyonce, The Weeknd and Eminem headlining? Because of the relevance to a generation that was born in the late 80's into the 90's?

Yes, different music is popular in different decades, and we may or may not agree that currently popular music is as objectively good as the music that was popular in previous decades.

What year would this have been? The Dead wouldn't have had the cultural cache in the 70s for the general public. They had their own fanbase, but wouldn't have been a draw.

Plus, depending on what year you would have had to contend with the Wall of Sound. Which, I mean, would have been wonderful for a set in the polo fields, but it also took a whole day to set up and another day to break down.

The Dead were selling out multiple nights at 15k seat arenas all over the North America in the late 70's. THey always had a huge Cali following. I don't think it's a stretch to say they could headline our fantasy 70's Chella.

Absolutely agree that we may or may not agree on "whats good" or what artists would be suitable to headline now compared to then based on popularity. In 1999 we had BECK, Morrissey, TOOL and Rage Against The Machine headline from multiple yet alternative genres of music. Definitely not part of the mainstream of music and only popular within a certain segment of people. The trend to have more multi genre alternative artists headlining started to shift I think once they had Madonna perform in 2006, Prince and Roger Waters in 2008 etc. At some point we started to see more and more mainstream artist bookings and less of the alternative stuff which is ok with me buuuuut I really do miss a lot more of the cutting edge, musically boundary pushing performances of yore. With that being said I see many smaller tiered acts on the poster that look very interesting that I can't wait to discover through their music and watching them perform. And I hope that the festival will one day revert back to booking artists who are maybe not so popular but push the envelope so to speak when it comes to music and performance and not just book whoever is popular at the time.

... the appeal of War on Drugs. They sound so generic and middle of the road to me, like the audio equivalent of b-roll, but more than a few people who otherwise seem to have good taste in music like them. What stands out for those who like them?

Dunno that I can convince you of anything with the War on Drugs, but what makes me love them is the way their songs build and swell over time, and occasionally explode. At their best, it feels like open road Americana driving music at its finest; I'm a huge Springsteen fan, and there aren't many bands that I've come across that so consistently mirror and update what makes him great without straight up ripping him off.

I find it's easiest for me to get into a band with a gateway song, so try Red Eyes -- first two verses set the tone and build tension, and then his yelp at 1:47 into the chorus just gets me every time. Then I love how it resets at 2:23, catches its breath, and at 3:15 begins to regroup for one more go. If those things don't win you over, they may just not be for you. Overall, I prefer Lost in the Dream to A Deeper Understanding.
