Your disco music sucks.
Do you know what pseudo-intellectuals do, Vigo? They name drop intellectual sign posts anywhere and everywhere they can in a desperate bid to reveal themselves as cultural and informed and deep. Usually, they do this in instances when it makes no fucking sense to randomly refer to Wittgenstein, and furthermore, refuse to ever elaborate upon the relevance of whatever writer they're quoting or parroting. Remind me again which of us does that on this board? How's your shoe business going, by the way? Has your refusal/inability to jump for chicken feed panned out for you in the real world?
Good, everything is going good. Thanks for asking.
My experience in school was that most of the teachers sucked. I had a few really good ones but most of them sucked.
Oh ho ho ho, very very complex indeed. How shall we overcome this quandary.
Perhaps you should chair a colloquium on the matter. you and Jackstraw can work together on a slideshow for us.
Can I borrow your collection of leather bound books to stage behind me for the streamed video presentation of my lecture on the topic? I want to make sure people think I'm learned.
Nope, I stripped the leather off for use in my upcoming footwear collection.
The system is not designed with the well being of any individual student in mind, never has been. It's designed to maintain the system.
Of course it's ridiculous to pass a kid along if they clearly have no grasp of the subject - whether you call that a D or F or zero or whatever. But if you think any systemic/institutional time or thought or attention is going to be given at that moment as to why said student is failing, and genuine, thoughtful remedies applied that may help mitigate or reverse that particular student's failings, think again. There's no mechanism in place for that. It's a scary thing to send your children off to school, and as a parent you need to be very very aware of what's going on. The onus is on the parent. Don't expect the school to help, and if you need it, be prepared to fight for it.
As for standardized testing, we all know it's ridiculous. The schools my daughters attended were high performing, so not only were the students given regular standardized tests, they were given other tests to test(!!!) to see if the state should switch tests. This happened on multiple occasions. One year I think they did this four times. And the parents weren't allowed to opt out. Steam comes out of my ears just thinking about it.
I don't see the benefit of kids barely passing through with C-'s if they legitimately do not understand the material. There's a big difference between the types of students who rebelliously refuse to jump through the hoops of Big Ed because they aren't mentally stimulated and students who sincerely struggle with learning. The former won't struggle when going to highschool if they want to apply themselves, the latter will, will drop even further behind and will suffer for it.
I was in a public high school, but Burbank is a small (100,000 people) L.A. County city that is mostly upper middle class with its own school district. The students were either drugged out dipshits or extremely competitive about grades and scores. I don't think I fully understood what standardized testing really was at the time, as such a big deal was made about our individual scores on everything so that we all wanted to make sure we were doing better than every other student.

If you have green eyes and are left handed, how unique are you?
Somebody has been able to access enough of my husband's information to attempt to make inquiries on opening credit cards. Luckily, as a result of my wallet being stolen a few months ago I opted to invest in Identity Theft protection, so we've been able to hinder the process. But (despite plenty of intervention on our part over the past few days with our bank), they have been able to open one account that has not been used as of yet, and just today a "pay-by-phone" check was cleared through my bank account on our Best Buy card. They paid off our washing machine. But, obviously they now have my bank account information, right? I've put freezes on all our accounts and with all of our credit bureaus, and we'll go to the bank to close our accounts and open new ones.
But... Help me understand? How the hell does this shit happen? It seems to stem from the Best Buy account. Did some kid just start fucking around? Did the asshole that stole my wallet and my husband's bike almost 6 months ago start fishing around? I did all the freezes and stopping of cards back then.
I'm so fucking angry and scared.
