Number 9 in a row for me. My friends and I have joined up with a sound camp this year. I've never been part of a large group out there so I'm interested to see how it goes.
We're not doing a whole lot of building this year so I hope to find a couple art projects to help out with on the playa. I'd also like to get out more during the day this time. It's usually pretty hot but I think a big golf umbrella and a misting fan might be the trick to keep me mobile under the sun.
Wow, 9? How have things changed? For the good and the bad.
Well, it's certainly more crowded out there these days and the percentage of newbies is higher... nearing 50% I think I read somewhere. The scale of the art has gotten grander and the number of art pieces has increased. That plus the excitement level at some of the parties more than outweighs the inconvenience of having more people around.
The law enforcement presence feels like it has grown significantly as well. Shit, in 1999 there was a drug exchange table at one of the camps. No fooling, I walked up there cuz I was looking for something. They were out of what I wanted and had too much of what I had to trade! You don't see that anymore. People are a little more under wraps about drugs and sex these days. General nudity is still in full effect... just less public cunnilingus. Of course if you're looking for it and you're not a creep you'll find it. The swinger and porn crowd have a presence out there.
There is some clique-like things (usually around the dance clubs) going on that I didn't really notice before, but for the most part the people are all still trying to do the same old thing... which is to have way too much fun while being nice to people, partying their brains out, participating in art stuff, dancing and enjoying life.
