I like the weather too, but it makes me a little nervous when I am already running the A/C in my car in February. 120degree summer seems more likely, which sucks. My son and Nick both work outdoors, so I worry about the heat a little more probably.

This winter has actually been colder than what I remember from last year. My memory isn't all that reliable though I guess.

    also, finger rock trail:

Also, if it's too warm to hike on the ground, you can haul up to the top of mount lemmon and walk around up there. Usually 20 degrees cooler than it is on the ground.

Thanks for the tips, ladies. If it's too hot to hike, I'll head for the high country. Forecast is for 81(!) on Saturday.

I'm coming with, but not to ride. I'll have Saturday to myself, so I'd like suggestions for good day hikes or exploration in the Tucson area; I'll have the car so driving won't be an issue. Since I'd be hiking alone, I'd prefer something well-traveled (Tucson Mountains? Saguaro NP West or East? other suggestions?). Also any suggestions for a cheap but decent place to stay? I don't want to camp at the race venue; there's always lots of noise and commotion and it's not very conducive to sleep.
I'm from Tucson and I absolutely second Mt. Lemon. Not far of a drive and it's gorgeous. Sabino Canyon is great as well. If you have time, go to the desert museum. It's not really a museum per se, it's more of a zoo for animals of the Sonoran desert.

Also, where abouts in town are you staying? I can definitely recommend some places.

EDIT* Love the pics Ivy. I miss the desert.

There's always Hotel Congress. No TV's in the rooms, big western metal keys, supposedly haunted.

I was just browsing through yahoo articles, and apparently the movie Empire Records was written by a former employee of a Tower Records in Phoenix that closed in 2005. I wonder if that was the Chris-town store I used to frequent? I loved that place. There was also one at ASU.

The Matsuri Japanese Festival in Heritage Square this past weekend was a lot of fun for me and my kids and FREE. I did have to pay for parking, but it was so cool to go to a free event that my kids really wanted to go to, and my daughter Cerys was so excited to see everyone dressing up as their favorite anime characters and dressing in traditional Japanese style. And of course buying tons of souvenirs and Japanese books (cerys is teaching herself Japanese). I definitely look forward to next year.

Rock Fiesta, the largest Latino Rock Festival in the history of the US, is playing near Phoenix in Quartzsite, Az. next March.
Check out this off the charts lineup: Caifanes, Pxndx , El Tri, Ozomatli, Kinky, Plastilina Mosh, Nortec Collective, and many more. Molotov has just been added to lineup. Grab your camping gear and party all weekend.

Hey Zonies, I'm back with some need of advice again. Doing a desert road trip at the end of March to New Mexico, and on the way back to Tucson from Las Cruces (possibly Truth or Consequences) I'd like to break up the monotony of the freeway by detouring down the 80 to Bisbee and through Tombstone back up to the 10. Is the road scenic enough to warrant the extra time? I'm sure Tombstone is a tourist trap, but Bisbee looks pretty interesting and we do like driving backcountry roads. Any advice/tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

I feel like my parents have visited Bisbee before but my mom passed away last year & she's the one who would remember (dad's memory is shit), so I can't opine. Only posting so you don't feel completely ignored.

Well, if there's anyone else out there who enjoys driving aimlessly through the desert and knows anything about this road, let me know.

Love Bisbee. Has a cool art vibe to it. Plus, there is a hotel there that is made up of old Airstream trailers. http://www.theshadydell.com/

Bisbee's pretty cool for a short visit (been a couple times over the years), and yes, Tombstone is a tourist trap, so avoid. The landscape around 80 isn't a whole lot different than what you see from the 10 in this part of the state, though (still a nice backcountry desert road). It's about 50 miles or so one-way.

I'll give you a different suggestion for a side-trip off the 10 (as long as the weather's good): instead of continuing to Benson and heading down 80 to Bisbee, get off at Willcox (about 30 miles closer to NM) and take the 186 about 30 miles toward the Chiricahua Nat'l Monument (I find this backcountry road more interesting than 80 to Bisbee). Then take 181 for a few miles to the western entrance to the monument and visitor's center. Hiking (a fairly easy hike, little kids can do it, something like 7 miles roundtrip) the nearby Heart of Rocks loop trail is one of the best day hikes I've done in AZ. Very cool rock formations like something out of the Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote cartoons. But you have to go all the way to see the best formations, which are at the "apex" of the trail. There are creeks along the way, and even some bit of forest. Bisbee's a sweet, non-redneck little town, with pubs and antique shops and all that, but if I was doing a quick side-trip in this part of AZ I'd do the unique Heart of Rocks hike in the Chiricahuas instead.
