That's a wrap for 2016. 45, not counting festivals. Less shows attended overall than past years, but some big big bucket list acts scratched off.
2/03/16 - Unknown Mortal Orchestra - The Fonda...
ahahahha looks to be another year of the same!
Don't call it a comeback, bitches!!!
His comments called for none of this. None.
I really love Cate Le Bon's new one, and Esperanza Spalding's latest is good as well.
Dinosaur Jr - Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not
Perfect. Goddamn perfect.
A slew of potentially good stuff leaked today:
Autechre - elseq_1-5 (released by the band, so not technically a leak)
Pantha du Prince - The Triad
Sepalcure - Folding Time
Mutual Benefit - Skip...
Must have been better up close. The sound was TERRIBLE toward the back.
Totally agreed re: "A Day in the Life". Was my absolute favorite song until "Marquee Moon" came into my life. And yeah, Sgt. Pepper's is maybe the 5th best Beatles record in my book.
If you look closer, you'll see that figure is for events when they include the parking lot outside. Ain't no one gonna be watching PJ Harvey from the parking lot bruh
I like The Cure! I don't love the band, but I like them just fine. In exchange for working merch that show, I was told I'd get into one of the nights free, but it turned out to be so ridiculously...
gtfo with this setlist
I'm sure they'll switch it up as the tour goes on, like they always do.
The Shrine Auditorium (seated) is 6K or so. The Expo Hall (GA standing) is nowhere near that big. A quick Google search says 3,500. It's never seemed even that big at shows there.
It was also by far the most underwhelming show I've seen the band do. It seems like they use small venue shows to test out new material, and the crowd at the SB Bowl that evening was the victim of...
True Love Waits is tears-inducing. What a beautiful recording of that song, after all these years.
It flows really well in the alphabetical order, wouldn't be surprised if that was the actual tracklist. Especially since True Love Waits is the album closer in that order.
This is really, really good. "Glass Eyes" is gorgeous. Everyone who loves to look down their nose at the band, pointing to skittering drum beats and sameness in their output, doesn't have much ammo...
It's up on ?
Lotus Flower is a great single (MUCH better than the Thom solo performances we were under the impression it was going to be), and Separator is one of their better latter day songs. For me, it's the...
Yeah. Radio Silence starts off the album really well, I was onboard and ready to go. But good god is the rest of the album dreadful. It's like he took his worst tendencies from past albums and...
In before the inevitable "hurr hurr this is the only Burn the Witch that's good"
yeah lol nvm
Lush was perfect tonight.
Everyone who y'all were trying to say didn't die in last season's finale really died.
They just opened a DTLA location!
Solid! I've never seen them.
Also, it's clearly time for a new avatar. PJ Harvey's new album leaves a lot to be desired. God damnit.
I disagree. The last two albums ripped, this is pretty tame and unmemorable in comparison. There were some real barnburners that caused me to go out of my way to see him live those tours. This...
I mean, even if they just got up there and farted into a mic for an hour that wouldn't change the fact that Since I Left You is a singular masterpiece one bit.
HOLY SHIT. FINALLY. YES!!!
One final time.
Mainly the vocal affection, and to a lesser extent the songwriting. It was part of what took me a bit to get into Girls, that first album especially channeled Costello so blatantly. Which is fine,...
"Berlin Got Blurry" is indeed great, but it's SUCH an Elvis Costello ripoff. Looking forward to finally catching these guys live, I've dropped the ball every time they've been in town up until now.
I haven't ever given any of their albums a ton of spins, but this one seems to be slighter than the last few after one listen. Some good songs though, especially that middle section.
Top 10 at the 1/4 year point
1. Oranssi Pazuzu - Värähtelijä
2. Kerridge - Fatal Light Attraction
3. Kendrick Lamar - untitled unmastered.
4. Detroit Swindle - In Reverse EP
5. Moomin - A...
I was gonna say! Haha.
2. Tom Waits
3. PJ Harvey
4. Spacemen 3
Only because those seem at least slightly possible. I've given up hope on Talking Heads, Husker Du, Scott...
I've put together a comprehensive Spotify playlist of all the bands playing.
Are you alive? Haha. That was spectacular. The entire show was great, but the Ys material in particular was the strongest I've seen it performed.
Thank you for this rec Cara, I just listened to it today. Yeah, "Beta Male" is fantastic! I was a bit worried for a bit, the first few songs on the record sound a LOT like Deerhunter. Not that...
