View Full Version : Who was the first band you ever say at Coachella?

01-02-2007, 04:00 PM
Mine was Cornershop in 2002.

01-02-2007, 04:27 PM
Assuming "say" means "saw," I actually don't remember. I went in 1999--it may have been Morrissey.

01-02-2007, 04:28 PM
The Section Quartet in 2004

01-02-2007, 08:08 PM
Super Furry Animals in '99. They came on before Modest Modest and I had no idea at the time who they were. It was during the Demons tour and they were fking awesome. I went on to see them 3 more times over years and credit Coachella for having learned about them in the first place. Plus, Rhys is way hot.

Another memorable moment that was a first and also a last was seeing the Art of Noise who I had no idea was at the festival. "Moments in Love" started to play. It was one of my favorite songs of theirs although they kinda killed it by trying to make it a "dancy" version by just well....speeding it up to *channels Spaceballs* Ludicrous Speed. It sounded like a chipmunk on speed was running laps on top of your record player. It was however the first time I'd seen the Art of Noise and most likely the last opportunity I'll ever have to see them again.

pretty girls make graves in '04. however, i have to admit, i didn't have a clue who they were at the time, that was all my sister's influence.

I "heard" Section Quartet while feasting upon a fruit salad (which was half cucumber, and that's not even a fruit), then one of out group departed to see dios. After that, the rest of us enjoyed the shade for a few more minutes, before doing a little exploring. We saw a couple of the "art installations" and peeked inside the film festival tent. Wonder why we didn't get the DVD we saw everyone with later that night, grrr. Anyway, we retreated to the shaded area in front of the Outdoor Theater concessions and "heard" Howie Day (terrible), and the Stills. Then my group lost another member, and we went to the Gobi tent and caught the last 10 minutes of Q and Not U. It was so unbearably hot and crowded inside that tent, and all the 8-foot-tall people ruined every possible sightline, so we left the tent, and my friend gave up on Beck and left for the main stage.

So technically Q and not U. Shame that seeing Beck was such a difficult task, especially since it meant missing Trail of Dead and Death Cab for Cutie. Oh well.

01-03-2007, 03:55 PM
The Dandy Warhols, 2001.

They were one of the biggest reasons for me wanting to go to the Festival. It was weird seeing them in the early afternoon but they were still pretty hot.

01-03-2007, 04:11 PM
Wonder why we didn't get the DVD we saw everyone with later that night, grrr.

I think I have that DVD, but I've never watched it. It's the one with that "Bodysong" thing on it, right? I don't know why I haven't watched it. Lazy I guess.

Let's be honest...it wasn't just your first band at Coachella, it was your FIRST CONCERT EVER

I'm so glad the board was able to convince you to come down that year. Even though our flags didn't quite turn out as expected and we almost DIED TWICE while getting there and back there was a lot of fun to be had.

01-04-2007, 12:46 PM
The Dandy Warhols played Coachella? Damm.

01-04-2007, 02:43 PM
The Section Quartet in 2004

yes. that.

All That I Am
01-10-2007, 12:59 AM
It was Tortoise in 2003

01-11-2007, 12:58 PM
The Dandy Warhols, 2001.

same here.

01-11-2007, 01:11 PM
Now I'm wondering if I have the old lineup times somewhere because I really don't have any idea who the first band I saw was (in 99). Bis? Morrissey? dunno. I remember the first band I saw when I came BACK to coachella in 04 was the Section Quartet.

01-11-2007, 03:57 PM
Blonde Redhead in '01, though I can't say I was too impressed. I think I left after a few minutes to catch the Dandy Warhols...

01-11-2007, 06:04 PM

True, true...It was a great trip with many memories. I still have my flag too :)

01-12-2007, 08:23 AM
Flags? You brought flags inside Coachella?

01-12-2007, 01:58 PM
Mine was DJ Icon in 04. That was also the first time I had heard a DJ spin before. Then Juana Molina, then Dios, then Section Quartet, then Howie Day. The first band I actually wanted to see was the Stills. They were great.

01-12-2007, 09:59 PM
we attempted to bring flags into the campground to set up by our tent in 05....accidentally though, we left em at the apt.....i brought mine again in 06 though, and plan on doing so in 07.

01-13-2007, 02:14 AM
Oh. To locate your tent? Good idea. I'll write that one down with the lock, the tent-fan, and the glowsticks.

01-15-2007, 08:54 PM
Erase Errata in 04. They were awesome.

01-15-2007, 08:55 PM
Z-Trip in 2001

01-17-2007, 09:18 PM
Section Quartet in 2004 also. I enjoyed them even more in 2006 because by then I learned that they go better with either teriyaki bowl or spicy pie.

01-18-2007, 01:03 AM
mine was Dandy Worhols in 2001

01-18-2007, 06:56 AM
The Sounds in '04, followed by the lip-synching abombination otherwise known as Howie Day.

01-18-2007, 08:32 AM
pretty girls make graves in 2004....

a totally random sighting...they were pretty good but i think we just wanted to sit down and catch our breath after getting in....i think broken social scene might have been playing after them and that's why we were there...

01-18-2007, 10:36 AM
Section Quartet 2004 was the first band i heard, as i was coming in, whereas The Stills were the first band i saw. Good set too, as when they played in London they just knocked out the first album in track order.

01-18-2007, 11:55 AM
The Hives, 2003.
Perfect start.

01-18-2007, 01:55 PM
I think the one that stands out, but I don't know if it was exactly the first band I saw at coachella was Groove Armada's dj set in 2002. It was the perfect way to start my coachella experience...I've been to every single Coach since...

01-18-2007, 02:48 PM
2004- the end of the set by Kinky and then the full Heiroglyphics set. they were great, but I never realized that Del was only about 5 foot tall.

Best set was Massive Attack last year. Utterly stunning...although I also liked the Chemical Brothers in 2005.

01-18-2007, 03:24 PM
i think beck in 2004.

01-18-2007, 03:37 PM
i've never been to Coachella.

01-18-2007, 08:54 PM
Saul Williams in 2002 on the Outdoor Stage.
Although I really don't care for him, but the group we were with decided to settle in the shade tent (by the food) as we were incapacitated from some brownies...

01-18-2007, 08:55 PM
SUPER FURRY ANIMALS 1999 - around 2 pm ( I was hungover from the night before)

They palyed on the Outdoor Theater Stage which used to be located where they put the Sahara Tent now.

Does anybody remember them or this one time stage location?

01-18-2007, 08:56 PM
right on, Groove Armada's DJ set was awesome

01-18-2007, 08:57 PM
I also remember seeing Danny Masterson, Moby, DJ Shadow, and Brian Jonestown Massacre standing next to me out in the crowd, therer might have been only 500-1000 people watching them. Good times.

01-18-2007, 08:57 PM
right on, Groove Armada's DJ set was very good

01-18-2007, 09:00 PM
I.Q.U. IN 99

01-18-2007, 09:21 PM
nightmares on wax i think. it might have been kid koala though. 1999!

01-18-2007, 09:26 PM
99 vets in da hous!

01-19-2007, 06:57 AM
I believe it would have been Particle. If memory serves, that was the first band to perform, on the Outdoor Stage, Day 1 of 2003.

01-19-2007, 12:20 PM
The Sexy Magazines in 2005.

01-19-2007, 12:36 PM
had to be The Stills or Q and Not U in 2004

01-19-2007, 04:17 PM
First thing I saw at Coachella, was in ***9 (first day)....we walked onto the fairgrounds, and someone told me Maynard from Tools new band was performing at the main page in ten minutes.

We ran to the stage, and saw the first 'A Perfect Circle' show. There weren't enough originals yet to fill the half hour set, so they ended up playing a whole bunch of Cure covers. I was a Coachella addict in ten minutes flat, and have been every year since.

01-19-2007, 04:19 PM
...the board seems to have a problem with the letters p, r, and e, put in a word. If I write ***, it will probably blank them out.. also, *** seems to be doing the same thing (2, followed by two zeros)...wtf?

01-19-2007, 04:20 PM
see! it did that! nuts.
like I wrote fuck or something. apparently, p-r-e spells a nasty word, and so does 2-0-0

*** *** ***
*** *** ***.

01-19-2007, 04:20 PM
...and it let FUCK slide through.

good times. *** fuck.

stellastarr* in '04

We all became fans that day.
Immediately followed by Beck in the next tent.

01-20-2007, 09:29 AM
I missed Stellastarr* in '04 but caught them in '06. I'm going out on a limb and saying the first band I'll see for Coachella '07 is also going to be Section Quartet (unless they aren't playing for some reason).

01-20-2007, 10:23 AM
i got there just as clap your hands say yeah came on and wow! i can't wait to see who ends up first on my list this year.:D

01-20-2007, 11:06 AM
Mine was Rahzel, the Godfather of Noise, in ***9.

01-20-2007, 02:06 PM
What is this boards' malfunction?
Anyway, back in 99 the first band I saw was Bis. It was so hot, the kid behind me passed out during their set!

01-20-2007, 05:41 PM
In ***1, I heard Diesel Boy and AK***0 from the parking lot.. but I first saw & heard, Pedro the Lion, as I sat on that beautiful polo field. Next, I got to witness MC Supernatural, and he was worth the price of admission.. cha ching.

01-20-2007, 05:47 PM
there's many censored words here actually. try to ignore it :)

01-20-2007, 06:17 PM
Particle in ***3.

WTF kind of censorship is this!!?? That's suppose to be two-thousand-three.

01-21-2007, 12:57 AM
Section Quartet last year.

01-21-2007, 06:51 AM
Section Quartet in 04. That got me so pumped for Radiohead. The first non-cover band I saw was Dios.

he made a crack about how it wasn't exactly a timeslot of ***stige, and then said "you'll all see me again... and when you do, i'll be asking for spare change, so don't be cheap" or something to that extent.

01-21-2007, 10:35 AM
My first year was 06. We had problems the first day with one of the girls in our group passing out right off the bat due to heat/alcohol/dehydration. So the first group I finally got around to seeing was Ladytron (I think around...8pm?) The problems of the day had stressed me out quite a bit (after spending lots of $$$ getting to Coachella, the last thing I wanted to do was babysit a lightweight in the first aid tent) so my wine consumption had increased by about threefold. Needless to say, I had an awesome time at Ladytron, although I don't recall much.

01-21-2007, 02:15 PM
The Section Quartet in 2004

Me too. It was also the ONLY band we saw that year, as my daughter had come down with a bad cold, and I had to take her back home. (110+ heat already at about 10am is too much for even healthy people!).

01-21-2007, 09:51 PM

01-23-2007, 04:00 PM
oh man - it was whoever was the first dj in the sahara tent at like 1pm on saturday in 2004 -- seb fontaine? i have no idea - but we weren't into techno at all and it was still cool...we just couldn't be in the sun because i'm pretty sure it was 150 degrees that day.

01-23-2007, 09:36 PM
The Mars Volta was the first band I ever saw play at Coachella. I think it was 2003, the year RHCP was there last. I guess Mars Volta was not as popular then because I barely heard of them before that show, and there were barely any people watching them. I remember the first song, it was "This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed", or something like that. I love RHCP, by the way.

Saul Williams or Princess Superstar way back in the Bjork/Oasis year. The first band I saw a full set from was Kosheen, which was wonderful.

02-09-2007, 02:08 PM
Saint Germain on the Outdoor Stage at mid-afternoon in 2001 - they were playing "Rose Rouge" and they were a-swingin! The audience was REALLY diggin on them. I have not missed a day of Coachella since.

02-14-2007, 01:43 PM
The first band that i saw in coachella was in 2003 well it wast a band but it was hernan cattaneo in the sahara tent after waiting in line to get in the polo field like 2 hours i think i was going to die from the heat.

03-06-2007, 07:58 PM
2002..the Strokes but only for a minute because the guys my friend and I went with were still in line and we left them. So unfortunately we had to go back and wait for them. For me, 2002 was the best line-up ever!
