View Full Version : What size tent can I get away with in a car camping spot?

This is my first year camping and not really sure what size tent I can get away with. I purchased a 10x8 tent cause I wanted a lot of room for an air mattress and be able to stand up. Now that I'm going with a group and given it more thought, it seems like it will be too big. What do you guys think? Should I return it and go with something a little smaller? We're trying to fit 2 cars (4-runner and 2-door Corolla) and 3 tents (mine plus a 4-person and a 2-person) into 2 spots for the 5 of us going.

get the size of your friends tents and do some math. grab some string and map it out on the ground, or use chalk. start with your 20x30 space and draw the cars and tents within and see what you come up with. no one here can tell you since you haven't given the size of the cars or the other tents.

You got a 10x30 spot... Go measure your car and do the math.

If you wiki your car make and model it says dimensions.

Yeah, I had a giant tent last year and though it was nice for each of us 2 groups of girls to have our own space, air mattress and standing room, it was just too big. It fit within the 10x30 spot, but it was tight. Also to remember you'll have neighbors that are squished too. I suggest like these guys above to do a trial run with your buddies if you can. Go to a park or a parking lot and map out the size, and fully set up your stuff. It really helps.

Also, I found this tent I just bought to solve some space saving issues. Could work great with the 4runner.

That^ is awesome!
I wish I were that creatively gifted. I am gonna put more effort into decorating my campsite than I did last year, though. It will look nothing like that...haha

fancy graphics not really needed if you know basic math, but here you go.
