I had no idea who this guy was until the lineup came out, but this song is pretty legit. Hoping for a good crowd at an afternoon tent set.

[EDIT: Kimbra re-joins Gotye on tour a few days before Coachella, so it would appear that we will all get to see this entire song performed live! http://www.songkick.com/artists/53929-gotye/calendar?page=3]

He's been around for a hot min...and is extremely good. Half of his songs are chilled out and spacey, imo his better tracks. The others are upbeat and a little overly earnest.

As a fellow Aussie & longtime Gotye fan I am stoked to see him on the lineup.
He represents a lot that is great in music - he is humble, talented & independent. I saw him live last month and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. He has been known to be a little inconsistent live , his worst is still good but his best is brilliant !
Check him out...

He would have the full 10-piece band at Coachella, right?

vulcandeathgrip
01-18-2012, 12:15 AM
He has said that often he can't take the full 10 piece overseas, he does have a core group of 3-4 who travel with him & play a lot of the material on crazy electronic instruments & gadgets ( as apposed to the more "traditional" instruments the full band use )
When I saw him recently he performed "Thanks For Your Time" with the stripped back crew & it was really something to behold. I am excited either way. He has become more & more polished & the fact this is potentially a huge break into the US market for him means I'm confident he will be on top of his game.

gotye is foster the people of 2012 in terms of little guy getting the hype, but he's light years better than them.

i'm not even a HUGE fan of his but lots of songs on the newest album are good (even ones past the first 4). my favorite is actually State of the Art, and i'm glad someone posted the video on the first page cause i hadn't seen it yet and loved it. there are a handful of great tracks at the end of the album as well. the only one that annoys me is fucking Save Me cause it sounds exactly like Rebecca Black's "Friday" at the beginning and immediately makes me want to turn it off.

saw him thursday night at the el rey. had his core backup band, and they still sung backup vocals as other people have mentioned. it sounded fine. they were fun live, the audience was eating it up, and even tho Kimbra wasn't there, the girls still helped out. FF to 2:15

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aqzYZQkyHk&feature=youtu.be

he better be in mojave at the very least. his el rey show sold out two months in advance. he easily could have sold out a few more.

Definitely my top pick of the festival as well. So happy to see his huge success this year!

I actually worked with him about five or six years ago (Before Like Drawing Blood) for some background music on a video I was producing. So a couple weeks ago I wrote to him to let him know I was going to be camping for both weekends and if he wants to enjoy the Chella camping vibe, he is welcome to camp at the site or at least stop by for cocktails. He actually did get back to me and thanked me for the offer - but said his schedule was going to be too jammed. Still, he took my cell just in case.

Certainly didn't expect him to take me up on the offer, but maaann that would have been cool.

Just saw Gotye and Kimbra (opener/full band) last night at 9:30 Club in DC. Wow. I've been a fan of the guy for 5 years, and the wait paid off. He played Making Mirrors all the way through, with only "Hearts a Mess" from Like Drawing Blood (bummer, but no surprise). The set was a roller coaster of emotions, and the visuals were perfectly matched and extremely evocative. Some dark shit!

State of the Art was surely the highlight, sounded fucking amazing and all the sampling was done live. Somebody I Used to Know was the lowlight...paled in comparison to the energy of the other tracks. There will be massive sound bleed no matter what time he plays, because some of the songs are really ambient and quiet (Bronte especially). That said, he should def be on the outdoor, though prob will be in Mojave.

Kimbra was surprisingly good, though the vocal loops were prerecorded. She and Gotye both have the pipes to pull of their songs live.

A big impression I took away was that Gotye has real potential to move away from the pop mold of the last album. He dropped some improved beats that were really heavy, almost swag rap/dubstep style. Hope he continues experimenting.

all in all, the show confirmed him as a must see on the polo grounds.

Saw a video from the 9:30 club and saw he's got the full band setup. Given his increase in popularity and the fact that there will be visuals and a large live band, they really need to give him a prime spot. 8pm or later on the outdoor or mojave. I think this show will draw one of the biggest non-main stage crowds of the weekend.

Didn't mean to mislead! But he def didn't play his "good" older songs (imo, except "Hearts a Mess") I was pulling for "Puzzle with a Piece Missing" and "Night Drive." He didn't have the full band at 9:30...no horns at least. But some wild instruments: a tiny flying V guitar, a weird matte black electric banjo thingy, lots of samplers. The "organ" on "State of the Art" was so cool, really out there. Can't wait!

Vic Viper

this. set. was. amazing!

got there kind of late knowing it would be a crowded shitshow so for the first 3 songs or so i was outside the tent. once people realized he wasn't going to play "somebody..." right away they started leaving and i kept moving up. right after "somebody..." there was a MASSIVE exodus of people and i got roughly near the soundboard. so a special "fuck off" to everyone who paid $300 to hear a man sing one song they heard on the radio.

at some point (i was drunk) he played "i feel better" and i fucking lost it. definitely one of my favorites and it sounded great in the tent with everyone dancing and jumping. there wasn't much experimenting or new elements to the songs, most likely because of the 50 minute set, but everything sounded GREAT and just like the album except not in that pre-recorded way, there was definitely a band playing actual instruments.

he played, in no particular order:

easy way out
thanks for your time
heart's a mess
somebody that i used to know
save me
eyes wide open
i feel better
state of the art
(one other song that i can't remember)

great show.

Becca and I were up at the front for this. It's my favorite set of the weekend. I love that he played Somebody in the middle and cleared the shit out of the crowd. Even with the exodus (mostly in the back...we were up in the front and Rick was by the soundboard and he didn't see many people leave and we didn't either), it looked like the tent was full all the way back. Great set--very high energy and I love his voice on Hearts a Mess. I wouldn't choose Justice over this any day.

I tagged along w/ people who wanted to see Gotye. I found a comfy spot at a pillar 20 ft a way or so. I positioned myself, so that if I didn't like them, I could bail fairly easily.

8UVNT4wvIGY

it was a little awkward, and he tried to "ooh" it later in the song, but you could tell he was caught off guard and wasn't prepared for that, so it was quite flat when he did.

His whole set was fantastic, I had no idea the dude could bring it like that. The "sax" solo played on the sampler at the end was one of the highlights of my weekend

I was ... bored, honestly. I like 'someone you used to know', but the rest of their music doesn't really feel or sound the same. I wasn't gonna leave, because I was with a friend and I didn't want to piss the crowd off by cutting out, but in retrospect, I would rather have seen someone else.

I started out next to the handicap platform. While I only knew "Somebody" I was enjoying this set. But because a few of the songs weren't super loud, you could hear a large majority of the crowd talking. It was so distracting and rude, so you knew there would be a mass exodus after "Somebody." And, of course, there was. But that was ok for the rest of us who stayed because we were able to get much, much closer. I was impressed with the music and would see him/them again.

it's better to be straight back from the stage rather than off to the sides. the sound is far more directed straight through the tent than in a "cone". we left sub focus a little early on saturday because i was feeling beyond exhausted, and walking directly away from the mojave up into the food terrace we should still hear the music pretty clearly. gotye seemed a little quiet, but given that i wasn't even actually UNDER the tent for 3-4 songs, it sounded fine.

A few of my friends (who don't know Gotye, not even "Somebody...") met up with me at the set for a few minutes before heading off to Justice. I could tell they weren't into it, and they were itching to get to the main stage. They bailed during the exodus. I'm really glad I stayed - my girlfriend and I enjoyed the entire set (*even* the singalong), and we still had enough time to make it to a beer garden to catch Justice's full set.

04-17-2012, 12:56 PM
I fucked this one up, messed up on the set time and got to the tent too early, but I thought he was late, so I was a little annoyed and worried about getting over to Justice, not to mention getting knocked all over by the influx of people who just wanted to hear "that song". So by the time they actually hit the stage I was just not feeling it. Plus the sound where I was was very weak. So I left after 2 songs to head to Justice which was my biggest mistake of the weekend (Although I did get to hear some of The Weeknd on my way and that sounded fucking sick even from mid field), because Justice were actually late. Therefor I missed the epic sing along for nothing and only got to see about 20 minutes of Justice before I went over for Beirut.

Gotta love massive crowds that show up to hear one song then leave once it's finished.

This was the worst of this type crowd I've ever seen. Really unbelievable, and I felt bad for Gotye.

I was sitting to the side well outside the tent, because I'm not a huge fan (he's good, but I'm not in love) and the crowd was too huge to make anything closer more worthwhile. The crowd got even bigger than I thought possible and engulfed me. This normally wouldn't bother me (just part of the deal at Coachella), except none of the people were really listening to the music. They were just talking to each other and it got to the point where I could here the band from the next tent over more than Gotye.

Then Gotye played his hit, the crowd went absolutely nuts, and exited en masse. At first I thought the show was over, but of course...it wasn't. Gotye proceeded to play several more songs that were quite solid and stuff I'd imagine people who really like the hit would like, but they weren't at all interested in experiencing the guy as a live artist.

I suppose really I just don't understand people who spend the type of money it takes to go to Coachella and aren't really in to live performances. I feel like these people would have more fun just going to a club of pop music for a fraction of the price.

I will leave your opinion of his music as-is. First error to address: Gotye is nowhere close to being classified as "Sahara tent" material. Second error: Gotye played in the Mojave tent.

the reason why everyone left this show after "somebody" is the reason why i think Coachella attracts the worst fans of any festival.

I unfortunately just really found people to be "fake" music lovers overall at this festival and the gotye set really solidified that feeling for me. I had a group of girls next to me dancing the entire time during his set and screaming stuff like "I love gotye, like oh my god!", "He's so good!!" (imagine ditsy valley-girl voice) and then ditching his set 10 seconds before the single ended to get a running start back to the sahara tent. T'was quite lame. Not to mention the 500 billion cellphones that popped up during his single. Your recording is going to suck so please don't post that crap on youtube. I also had this completely idiotic fuckhead next to me screaming into his walkie talkie during the quite parts of the single.... you sir, and a complete fucking idiot...

Gotye put on an awesome show... and best part was the super amazing jam session at the very end. Thankfully most the tards had moved out by then.

By far, the most irritating crowd I was in...I couldn't see for shit and the impatience during amazing songs like State of the Art really pissed me off. Lots of those people need to get bent. Or atleast be less obvious.

Idk why everyone is bitching about the crowd for him. I was about at the center and they seemed pretty good. One guy had brought two big blow up Australian flag beach balls, I could hear a large amount of the crowd up front singing along with all the words to multiple songs, he got the crowd to join in in more complex ways than most of the artists i had seen this weekend (making different halves of the crowd sing different parts to songs, getting them to clap along to funky offbeat rhythms, etc.). I was surprised by the amount of people who stayed after his hit and new his material and were really into it. I expected much worse of the fans judging by the sheer amount of KISS FM "music" being played in the campgrounds.

My thoughts exactly. I was maybe 20 rows from the front on the left side of the stage - during Somebody I Used To Know the singalong was amazing. My favorite moment of Coachella by far. I was shocked when seemingly half the crowd left right after the song ended. I thought it was totally disrepctful to Gotye, and the worst crowd behavior I could think of during the 7 years I've been going to Coachella. Gotye deserved better than that. I was surprised that Gotye didn't save that song for last to go out on a high note. Though in talking to my friends, they thought that Gotye should have played it first, to get rid of all the poser fans and leave the fans who actually want to see all of his set.

I really liked the last song he played (Learnalilgivinanlovin), and it seemed like no one else in the crowd seemed to like that song for some reason. I only recorded a few songs at Coachella this year, but that was one of the few I did record, since it seemed like no one else in the crowd was recording it. The song was upbeat, with great instruments throughout. I was surprised that more of his songs aren't in this upbeat tempo form.

I was really lucky for this show. I knew that it would be very annoying to be further back with lots of people popping in and out, so this was one of the few shows that I waited for and got a solid spot up front. Everyone around me stayed after Somebody That I Used to Know, and one guy next to me knew all the words to the unreleased US song that he played. I didnt even notice the mass exodus after he played his hit because everyone I was around was so cool and stayed the whole set. Top 5 of my 2012 acts. I have a feeling that Gotye will either stop doing fests . . . or will stop playing that song. It's a great song . . . but his other material is amazing . . . and he seems like the type of artist that doesn't want to be pigeonhold into one song. He seems like an amazing guy. He's talented, has a fucking AMAZING voice, and is just a super strong songwriter . . . so I kind of hope he doesn't let it get him bitter. He seemed upset sometimes at the show.

Gotye/The Weeknd was the worst conflict of the weekend for me. I got a good spot for Gotye, watched the first three songs, headed to the Weeknd for his last three songs (thanks Weekend 1 for the setlist!), then back to Gotye for Heart's a Mess (my fav song that he plays live). We all knew that people would leave en masse after "Somebody", he did too. All that crowd flow allowed me to get way up front after The Weeknd ended. Thanks bandwagoners!

I wouldn't say I was shocked to see half the tent clear out. It's typical of pretty much any festival where one of the performers is a "one hit wonder" and most of the audience is only there to hear that one song. I knew it would happen, Gotye knew it would happen and so did Goldenvoice and pretty much everyone else in the tent. I would have loved for everyone at coachella to enjoy his set as much as we did, but then I wouldn't have been able to get such a great spot. I did think that he would have been able to hold a crowd a little better since there really wasn't that much else going on during his set that would typically compete with him, but I'm probably underestimating the draw of The Weeknd or getting a good spot for Justice.

When I saw Gotye at Terminal 5, Somebody was the 3rd or 4th song he played, so I don't think he ever closes his sets with that song, and honestly it's not a really closer anyways. 'I feel better' is a much better song to end a set on and I really did feel better when most of the fickle fans had left. I would have loved to be closer for State of the Art and Eyes Wide Open, but since I saw him a few weeks before, I got over it pretty quickly.

Yea, you are probably right. I was naive to think it wouldn't happen. I guess I was also thinking - where are all of these people going who left early? To catch the rest of Justice? To get a good spot for Calvin Harris? It didn't seem like he had any competition just based on how the schedule worked out. I'm a big fan of Eyes Wide Open as well.

I will add that I did leave some sets early at Coachella - mainly if the band was horrible (Greg Ginn, Atari Teenage Riot). But generally I try to stay through the whole set of a band if possible, unless there is a massive conflict.

...except none of the people were really listening to the music. They were just talking to each other and it got to the point where I could here the band from the next tent over more than Gotye.

I was there before the set started and chose to stand off to the side where I could still see the screen and all of a sudden came the groups of people walking in front trying to weave their way in closer. It was annoying but it was happening all weekend so I was used to it. But what pissed me off more than anything was the group of 3 people who shoved their way into the small space in front of me and proceeded to yap throughout the entire time they were there. They weren't even LISTENING!! And what was worse was that it made it harder for ME to listen. Then THE song starts to play and one of the girls (typically) yells "OMG I love this song" and I shout "OMG REALLY?!". The people around me laughed and one of the three had the decency to look embarrassed. They taped the song on their phones and when the song was over they left. I'm not a die hard fan of Gotye, but I really do enjoy his music. There were plenty of songs I didn't know but that I appreciated b/c it sounded great live. I just don't understand how people can be so rude :(

This crowd - I was in the cluster between the Sahara and Mojave - was the worst. "Is this the song?" "Did he play the song yet?" etc etc followed by a sea of smartphones in the air all the way to the back of the tent. The end of his set was great though and I got an excellent spot for Beirut.

I will admit that I was a little nervous about his set, I have been a fan for a few years and his early live performances were sometimes a bit shaky. But I honestly thought he was brilliant. it was very different to the last time I saw him when he played with a full band but the guys he had up there were great ! I couldn't give a shit about bandwagoners who jump off early, to be honest I was so into I barely noticed. I came over all patriotic and shit and was just proud of his performance and the way he carried himself. He really is just a nice dude and humble artist, should be more like him.

The singalong to "Save Me" worked pretty well on weekend 2 even though a lot of people left after "Somebody..." The singalong was one of my favorite moments of the weekend. I think because he played another song while everyone was leaving. Maybe it was a lesson learned from Weekend 1. Just like in theatre, the 2nd performance is usually a little better than opening day. Most of the people around me were talking about "that guy with that one song" ... "we're just going to leave after they play it anyways"

There was no hope getting in the tent and the crowd passing by was more irritating than expected.
