Who else is super excited for her set? Her Treasure Island performance blew me away, and Strange Mercy has been one of my most listened to albums of the fall/winter season. Coachella set should be nothing short of spectacular. But what time slot? 5 or so on the Outdoor?

I'm pumped to see her again. The detailed organized chaos of her sound is so impressive to me. I was blown away by her performance in Philly, and I was counting on her being in the Coachella lineup so I could see her again. Her cover of The Pop Group when I saw her last really got the crowd going.

Her first 2 albums are great, but I really think the best way to get into her is to start with her most recent, Strange Mercy. Really let's her guitar skills shine, and has the catchiest songs.

Looking forward to her set. Guessing afternoon in the Mojave (maybe Ellie Goulding slot - 3-4ish) or maybe the Gobi (they put Glasser in the Gobi and they're kind of similar; St.V is more popular though)

It's possible. Cage the Elephant went from playing the Gobi to playing the Outdoor in two years. I think generally on the Coachella forum, if not at large, indie music fans are myopic if not outright delusional about how popular their favorite bands are. Just because Pitchfork loves it, doesn't make an artist popular. I'd bet Strange Mercy has sold 50,000 or fewer copies (compared to your average Daughtry album which sells well over 500K).

It's not out of the realm of possibility she could be in the Gobi. The Gobi holds around 2,000, about the capacity of the Fillmore Auditorium in SF. If St.V were to play SF, she would definitely play the Fillmore (if not a smaller venue like Mezzanine). If she were to play the Mojave, it would be half full.

Still, she could be on the outdoor. Paul Weller was on the outdoor in 09, playing to a crowd of about 100 (and he had Johnny Marr!!). But not in a premium slot.

zachyd
01-17-2012, 10:33 AM
I think that Coachella tends to bring out enough people who are "in the know" about certain indie artists that they do tend to favor "buzz acts" getting good slots on good stages, which is why I could see the potential for St. Vincent to get an early evening Outdoor slot. She should have a pretty big crowd, and it'll also give her some good exposure which Goldenvoice seems to like as well.

Didn't they get bigger tents last year that have a "covered" capacity of 5,000 and more can view from outside with help from the screens? Dance tent is even bigger and can hold 7,000.

What's the highest she's ever been billed a big festival?

She's better in the dark, but I fear a nasty conflict that will prevent me from seeing her set. She's a priority for me but I already anticipate seeing a "rare" act instead since I saw her in October.

Same story. Hadn't heard a song before Treasure Island, now eagarly anticipating checking her out at Coachella, now knowing that material fairly well. She was easily my favorite performer at Treasure Island Day 2 (only went that day), and I really went to see Stephen Malkmus, Explosions in the Sky, Beach House, and Death Cab. So I left very happy.

Her show at the Crescent was easily one of my favorites of 2011. She does rework some songs a tiny bit so that they come across better in the live setting.
Also, it seems as if Annie is going to be turning into a bit of a television star this month. Her episode of Portlandia debuts tomorrow and she will also perform "Cruel" and "Cheerleader" on Gossip Girl on Feb. 13. Can't believe Annie's going to make me watch an episode of Gossip Girl.

Yes, she does wear a ring but I've never seen a definitive answer for it. The reviewer for the Phoenix New Times began their review of the Crescent show with this little anecdote which I found kind of funny:

On the lightrail ride home, the words of a friend: "Do you think she was wearing that ring to ward off potential stalkers or is there something she isn't telling us?"
