If we're raiding 2010 Sahara anyway I wouldn't mind 2ManyDjs. Little Dragon and The War on Drugs seem relevant and completely feasible, I can't believe neither was on the poster.

Little Dragon - if anyone from 2010 that's still around deserved a return, it's them. now this is a set for GETTING DOWN.
Kraftwerk - because I need something before Radiohead that will keep me awake
Nisennenmondai - need a face-melting instrumental noise band
Erasure - doesn't everyone want some 80's fun?
Metric - actually, I just saw their setlist from Mexico last night and since they didn't play a single new song, maybe that new album isn't so ready after all, so nevermind
Asobi Seksu - never played, shortage of swirly guitars
Emeralds - missed most of their set at Primavera, but what I did see was great. Would be one of those Gobi sets seen by a couple hundred people but raved about by all afterwards.
Summer Camp - they seemed like a sure bet
Aphex Twin - bring some respectability to the edm side?
that dome - ditto

I think they booked Dragonette by mistake.

I was really hoping for: iamamiwhoami and Tom Vek.

Absolutely agree with this. I thought we would at least get one of the Australian/NZ dance bands like Bag Raiders, Gold Fields, or Miami Horror. I would have liked something from this genre if even I'm not a big fan of some of these bands.

Tom Waits
Sigur Ros or Jonsi

Richie Hawtin of some sort

I was also hoping for Tomahawk after that thread I made of them doing another album. A bluegrass band or two wouldn't have hurt either

Metric - actually, I just saw their setlist from Mexico last night and since they didn't play a single new song, maybe that new album isn't so ready after all, so nevermind

It was a one-off show that was their first gig since couple Canadian Festival appearances in the summer. Probably just a paid vacation. They're kinda lazy with setlist variation and tour rehearsals.

Emily Haines has said in a couple interviews is virtually complete with a spring/april release. SXSW in March is booked. I know people who've heard several of the finished recordings.

As much as it pains me to say this, I doubt Elvis Costello will be there as he recently announced more dates:

April 10 -– Vancouver, Canada -- Orpheum Theatre
April 12 -– Seattle -– Paramount Theatre
April 13 -- Portland, Ore. -- Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall
April 15 -- San Francisco -– Warfield Theatre
April 16 -- San Diego -– Humphreys
April 17 -- Los Angeles -– The Wiltern
April 21 -- Windsor, Canada -- Colosseum at Caesars Windsor
April 23 -– Melbourne, Fla. -- King Center
April 24 -– Clearwater, Fla. -- Ruth Eckerd Hall
April 25 -- Hollywood, Fla. -- Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino
April 27 -- Jacksonville, Fla. -- Florida Theatre
April 29 -- Durham, N.C. -- Durham PAC

IF he were to be there, it would HAVE to be Saturday Week 1 and Friday Week 2 (unless he did Windsor Saturday 4/21, Coachella Sunday 4/22, and Florida Monday 4/23, which seems pretty unlikely).

What is goldenvoice's incentive in late adds if they sold out two weekends with the announced lineup?

Reinforce the notion that fans have to buy weekend passes 10 months early and GV gets to keep the interest that accumulates on $50 million.

Plus, there's still a decent chance that 'Roo, Lolla and ACL can trump their lineup. A couple strong adds would put that notion to rest.

blueblazered

What is goldenvoice's incentive in late adds if they sold out two weekends with the announced lineup?

IMO that's why the lineup sucks this year. With most of weekend 1 sold out during the presale, they didn't need to book as many (quality) bands.

Why do people want New Order so badly? Is it just because they're on the Ultra lineup?
They're famously unspectacular live.
Kraftwerk would be equally pointless - they've already played the same set at Coachella twice already.

Because Sunday is devoid of any acts in that genre.

The two Kraftwerk sets were quite different. Different lineup, different setlists, different versions, and different production. Stop trolling.

How do you figure? Were there any adds after the sell-out last year?

PrettyToneBK
01-14-2012, 10:42 PM
Since it's "sold out" they know what kind of money they are working with. Adding acts after the fact would only build more hype especially for next year. In a business sense I think it's smart to add acts. The line-up isn't as strong as last year's but with TWO weekends now... the money is there. They have room to add even if it's not an identical line-up.

I only put "sold out" in quote marks due to the whole credit card / error / decline debacle that I (and a few hundred people?) were victim of. After 30 hours, a day off my life, some hair loss and 1.5hrs on hold, Front Gate sold me a ticket. :)

I agree that if AEG has already budgeted to add some more acts, it makes sense from a business and PR standpoint. Staggered, late-adds generate more PR and buzz for the event in the coming weeks and adds future value to the Coachella brand. And while they've had a few very good years, they're not quite Glastonbury yet with full sell-outs of all passes before a lineup is even announced. So if they're known for some great late adds, even more people will have faith that Coachella will always have a great lineup and sometimes surprise you, so you'd better get those tickets. Or I'm just over-thinking this. Lots of great suggestions in this thread. I'm surprised about James Blake being missing as well. Seemed like an obvious one.

What more buzz could they possibly need? They sold out 2 Coachellas in three hours (more like minutes because most people who logged into FG past 10:05 did not get a ticket). The stories are everywhere. Facebook page is blowing up all year. They have the whole notoriety thing down. They don't need to throw in Prince with ten days to go ever again (And no one is a more viable candidate for the Portishead bump-off than The Black Keys).

That pretty space next to Avicii has been tantalizing me since the poster came out.

In reality, although I wouldn't bet on it, there is no reason GV wouldn't have ads this year. Sure, it's sold out, but this could easily be the year that sets Coachella at the undisputed top of the major four festivals this year. Dre/Snoop is a huge get that is highly unlikely to tour or appear at other festivals, Radiohead is a huge get that will probably be selective in festivals they play, ATDI/Refused I could easily see avoiding other festivals, and as much as the board hates them, the SHM/Guetta/Justice combination is comparable to a set of EDC headliners. Does anybody realistically see Bonnarroo or ACL topping this lineup this year? Or even coming close? I think everybody else is going to pale in comparison.

At this point, flush with cash and an instant sellout, AND with a year where there is no Glastonbury, I can see GV adding a couple other rare gets to this lineup just to cement their status in the world of music festivals. It would be a major rub in other festival's faces and only make this lineup seem bigger. Do I think it's a guarantee? Not at all. But to say that since it's sold out they won't be adding anybody is missing the point.

Here's the thing. There IS a reason to make a pleasing lineup for everyone. There IS a reason for adds:

When you create a brand, you don't discontinue doing what made your brand great just because it becomes successful. If you discontinue doing what made you successful in the first place, you guarantee failure in the future. They have a long term contract with Indio...they want this thing to continue for awhile. The only way to do guarantee continued success is to continue to "bring it".

You contradict yourself here.

How? I'm simply saying that this is the year Coachella is poised to cement themselves unquestionably as the premier festival in America. They already have what is likely to be the strongest overall lineup in the country. Major adds would increase and prolong the hype up until showtime. A Prince level add, admittedly beyond unlikely, would put Coachella at a level where no other American festival could come close to competing with. They have the money. If a QOTSA/ATCQ/Garbage/Cranberries level act was willing to come on board for this year, there is no way they wouldn't be booked.

I'm just saying money isn't the only motivator for adds like some people have been saying. It was in the past before Coachella sold out, sure, but now the motivation would be to put as much distance between Coachella and the other American festivals as possible.

BRING THE CUBE BACK!

Etienne De Siren was probably the most underwhelming Coachella act I have ever witnessed.

Had no idea about these dates. Seems a little tight to actually come to pass, and even if it actually does, the far-flung dates seem to indicate a DJ set, but my fingers are crossed. All else fails, I'll just go to St. Louis for that show.

His set at Primavera last year was out of this world.

Maybe he does live sets at Coachella, and then just jaunts out to do those DJ dates, leaving his gear and crew in Indio...... #WishfulThinking

I also support a New Build add.

And I still say if they add Colin Stetson, he'd be my most anticipated act of the weekend.

I'm sorry, but, what motivation, exactly, does Goldenvoice have for adding anyone? Is there something I'm missing?

Bragging rights, rubbing it in other festival's faces, being #1 and making the lineup more legendary when you're flush with cash and can do it, you're a guy, you should get that feeling, it's biological.

Also, fixing the Sahara, which with a wide open Friday it looks like they might just attempt to do.

I had a dream last night that Lemon Jelly, Kraftwerk (on the poster as Kraftwerx), and Mogwai were all added. I am thinking that is definitely going to happen, so thank me when it does.
