Warren Hellman, creator of San Francisco's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, a world-class festival weekend he paid for out of his own pocket, died today at age 77 in San Francisco.

This is a bummer. Thanks for all the good times, Mr. Hellman. Your generosity to our fine city will not be forgotten!
The cause was complications from treatment he had been receiving for leukemia. Doctors had told Hellman that the illness could be neutralized, and he postponed chemotherapy treatments this fall to appear with his band The Wronglers at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, his lavish annual gift to the city, and to tour with one of his idols, Jimmie Dale Gilmore.

His daughter announced yesterday that Warren set up a large endowment to ensure the festival continued after he croaked. Fuck yeah, thanks Warren!

Family members say that Hellman has endowed the festival for 15 years after his death. "I know that next year we will have one fuck of a festival," said Holliday.
15 years. Amazing.
