With about 80,000 concert-goers expected in Indio each day for this weekend's Coachella Valley Music and Arts festival, special traffic rules will be in effect.

The three-day festival will feature rapper Jay Z as the headliner at the Empire Polo Field in Indio tonight.

Indio police spokesman Ben Guitron said streets will be congested, and residents not attending the festival should give themselves extra time when driving. Jefferson and Monroe streets, which are the main entry and exit to the polo field, should be avoid.

Delays are expected after 9 a.m. on the following roadways:

Jefferson Street, from Indio Boulevard to Avenue 52
Monroe Street, from Interstate 10 to Avenue 52
Highway 111 to Jefferson Street
Highway 111 at Monroe Street;

Guitron also advised residents to avoid eastbound I-10 at Jefferson and Monroe streets exits.

Good alternative routes for travel north and south in Indio will be Madison, Jackson and Calhoun streets along with Golf Center Parkway.

For eastbound travel in Indio, Guitron suggested using Fred Waring Drive and Miles Avenue east of the Whitewater River was as well as Avenue 48.

Road closures will include Avenue 49 at Monroe Street; Avenue 50 between Jackson and Madison streets; Hjorth Street between Avenue 49 and Avenue 50; and Madison Street between Avenue 49 and Avenue 50.

Roads adjacent to the event will be converted to one-way after 11 p.m. over the weekend to help keep traffic flowing after the end of the festival.

Monroe Street will be closed to southbound traffic from Avenue 52 to 48; Avenue 50 will be westbound only from Madison to Jefferson streets; and Avenue 52 will be eastbound only from Madison to Monroe streets.
