I'm unemployed.

psychic friend
02-28-2007, 03:43 PM
you quit?

02-28-2007, 03:46 PM
Damn, B.

02-28-2007, 03:47 PM
Bastards. I would have pulled the fire alarm on the way out.

02-28-2007, 03:49 PM
I am sorry. I hope that some other opportunity knocks very quickly.

02-28-2007, 03:51 PM
time to drink.

02-28-2007, 03:54 PM
Explanation please.

02-28-2007, 04:16 PM
That sucks. I hope, on your way out, you yelled "MERGE THIS" And then dropped trou, simultaneously pointing at your junk and their ass.

02-28-2007, 04:17 PM
Or something like that.

02-28-2007, 04:24 PM
I worked for comapny A. Company A wasn't doing so hot, but was getting by. Company A's CEO decided that she couldn't continue to be CEO due to health reasons, so she decided to peace out. This put company A in a precarious position. Company B, a competitor to company A, came along and purchased company A. Company A's employees were skeptical and wary of this move, due to uncertainty of employment, salary, etc. Company A's employees were told not to fear, as company B was going to keep all of them, and everyone would remain at their current salary. As the merge became finalised, both of those promises were broken. Of the 8 company A employees, 5 were kept with 1 taking a cut in salary. I was informed that today was my last day. I have filed for unemployment, and am going to spend the next 2 weeks fishing. While I will be ok for a while with severence, vacation, and unemployment pay, I am not entirely sure that I will be able to continue to pay rent and bills, etc. Luckily, I am month to month where I live. Worst case scenario, I move out of this house and into an apartment, and sell my coachella tickets on Ebay along with one of my drumsets to buy me a couple more months while looking for a job. I am less than thrilled.

02-28-2007, 04:34 PM
It is a less than thrilling life being unemployed.

02-28-2007, 04:38 PM
Bastards. I would have pulled the fire alarm on the way out.

A bit off topic but in many buildings / co's, this won't bring the FD running thru the doors. It will ring in to security or whoever monitors the system but may not cause a FD activation based on certain criteria.

02-28-2007, 04:41 PM
I would set the roof on fire.

02-28-2007, 04:44 PM

And my best wishes to the OP. I've never lost my job, I'm not sure how I would deal with it.

02-28-2007, 04:44 PM
Holy fuck! I'm so sorry, man.

02-28-2007, 04:44 PM
Man, that sucks. Are you really considering selling your coachella ticket?

02-28-2007, 04:49 PM
what type of job are you looking for, in the near future?

02-28-2007, 04:50 PM
If need be, yeah. Verizon and AAA and their bill collecting buddies want their money (Lewbowski).

02-28-2007, 04:52 PM
what type of job are you looking for, in the near future?

Not entirely sure. I really wasn't a fan of the videography. It was fairly boring. I'm thinking of taking this time to get Microsoft certafied and doing something IT related.

02-28-2007, 04:54 PM
Well. I thought this was a pretty sad story, until you mentioned selling the drumset.

Then, honest to goodness my stomach dropped, and I feel horrile.

All the luck to hawkingvsreeve. I hope you pull out okay.

02-28-2007, 04:54 PM
that or the Cisco certification can get you a decent job almost anywhere.

02-28-2007, 04:56 PM
Yeah, that is what I am hoping for. Apparently somewhere in San Diego they offer free Microsoft cert classes that prepare you for the tests, and then you get a discount on the tests. Pretty good deal.

02-28-2007, 05:41 PM
I had a girlfriend whose mom was fired from a merger. However, they promised that they would not fire anybody or mess with salaries. They fired her, but kept only some of the people, but she didn't even do anything wrong. They just fired her because of the merger... Now she is taking it to court. Maybe you can look into that?

02-28-2007, 05:43 PM
In California you can be fired without reason.

02-28-2007, 05:46 PM
Not cool.

02-28-2007, 05:49 PM
In California you can be fired without reason.

Unless you're unionized. Then grievances can be filed.

Just sayin'

02-28-2007, 05:57 PM
I'm sorry to hear that Hawking. But maybe this is just another door opening? An opportunity to do something else that is more interesting to you?

02-28-2007, 05:59 PM
Yeah, that is what I am hoping for. Apparently somewhere in San Diego they offer free Microsoft cert classes that prepare you for the tests, and then you get a discount on the tests. Pretty good deal.
i know some UCSD IT employees. want me to check if they're having any openings?

02-28-2007, 06:12 PM
That was amazing shotglass. Really brightened my day.

02-28-2007, 06:37 PM
I'm so sorry, that really sucks. I wish you all the best of luck!

02-28-2007, 06:38 PM
Glad I could help. I didn't read all of the posts, DON'T SELL THE DRUMS!!!!! I was out of work for 11 months and I held on to them the whole time. One thing I learned with unemployment is no matter how bad it gets, you gotta know that you will make it through. Don't think anything is beneath you. Just keep looking and you'll find something. It doesn't even have to be your next carreer, just something to pay the bills. good luck

The best way to become unemployed

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, man. Still...don't sell your Coachella tickets. Or your drumset. You should always try your best never to sell off things musical out of desperation. Lost many an instruments that way myself.

That video was awesome!

I once quit an insurance office I was working in to go work for the competition. Everyone at that office was super bitter when they found out, not that any of them were decent people to begin with or anything. The day I left, I went from office to office telling each co-worker what a total piece-of-crap I thought they were. So much fun!

'Hey, Bob? Yeah...can I have a word with you? Just wanted to let you know, you're one of the biggest assholes I've ever met in my life. You know how you forged those signatures on the Adamson's household. Yeah...probably going to report you for that once I get over to the other agency. Just thought I'd let you know. Eat shit. Hope you die. Mmmmkay? Have a great weekend. Yeah, TGIF there buddy.'

On the way out the door, I told the 'big boss lady' that her husband had been screwing a co-worker in the office for the last 6 months and had bragged to me about it. *LOL*

Ah...good times.

02-28-2007, 06:59 PM
I left an ok job for another job that paid more and that I thought would be better. Man was that a mistake. My new boss was what some people would call Satan. Just an absolute fucking asshole douchebag mutherfucking cocksuck that talked down to everyone and made everyone at that place feel like shit. On Halloween 2004 we were all able to dress up and I got my Sonny Crockett thing going and he's dressed like Bozo the fucking clown. He starts going off on me about a deadline that was once again unatainable in the amount of time he gave me, after two months working for this douchebag I just about had it. So after he yelled at me in front of the whole office, I stood up, ooked him straight in the eye and said, "Fuck you you fucking clown, I quit." And I walked out. It took 11 months to find another full time job editing but it was probably the best thing I ever did because I now work at one of the best production houses in Chicago.

02-28-2007, 07:00 PM
I'm sorry to hear this. I really hope you don't have to sell your drums or miss Coachella. You are a smart guy, I bet you will find something.

That man is my hero.

02-28-2007, 09:15 PM
thats sucks hawking.

02-28-2007, 09:15 PM

02-28-2007, 10:28 PM
Yo Hawking...I live in San Diego and I ALWAYS see the Sheriff's office hiring...in fact they just put up a new billboard advertising for openings...flaunting a $73,000 salary to boot...

Now if there were ANYTHING that would get me into law enforcement, that might be it!

Good luck though.

02-28-2007, 10:30 PM
Don't do it in LA. You have to work in the LA county jail for 5 years to start off.

02-28-2007, 10:33 PM

02-28-2007, 10:44 PM
Im a Cisco CCNP if you decide to go that route, drop me a line and I can help witht he material.

02-28-2007, 11:19 PM
Man that sucks. Sorry to hear about you losing your job.

02-28-2007, 11:34 PM
Hey dude, my dad's pretty connected when it comes to job searching in general, I'll talk to him about it at some point, but I think it'd help if you gave me some of your credentials or what-not.

02-28-2007, 11:36 PM
He makes a good "o" face.

02-28-2007, 11:39 PM
Sorry to hear about that Brandon. Your photoshop of my wife DJ'ing is probably my favorite post ever on this board. You're good people and deserve better. Fuck Companies A&B.

02-28-2007, 11:51 PM

02-28-2007, 11:53 PM
I know about TVs. I can be a Television Specialist.

03-01-2007, 12:07 AM
it took a little bit of convincing, but brandon has come to his senses and decided to become a sheriff.

look out!

03-01-2007, 05:34 AM
Hahaha...great! If I ever see that guy askin me to pull over, I'm startin' a high-speed chase...lol

03-01-2007, 06:00 AM
Hey hawking, we haven't 'met', but sorry to hear about the job. Been there myself and it's misery, and can be hard to keep your head up.

I sure hope that you can keep your drums & ticket, you need some positives now to help you get through.

Larger public universities (and often community colleges) often have some uninspiring but solid IT/production positions in Distance/Online Education -- taping, editing, CGI, integrating notes/text into videos, etc. That could be a place to fall into for a year while you sharpen skills/get certifications.

Good luck & keep us updated!

03-01-2007, 02:26 PM
that sucks. sorry to hear the bad news. things like this really are downers, it's hard to know what to say to someone who's just had his life turned upside down.

PS. let me know if you have any Coachella tix for sale.

03-01-2007, 02:53 PM
Hang in there. I got laid off when I was young and broke. Out of desperation I sold my Precision Bass and some other music gear. In hindsight, I should have kept the gear and scraped up the few hundred dollars I got for it (this was many years ago) from somewhere else. Today that bass would be worth many times what I got for it. Also, losing a job is the perfect time to do something like go to Coachella. The mental health benefits outweigh even the inflated profit you might get from selling the tickets.

03-01-2007, 03:27 PM
that sucks. There's nothing more degrading than looking for a job.

03-01-2007, 03:58 PM

You can find a receptionist or valet job on here pretty easily...they'll hold ya over until ya find better...

03-01-2007, 04:06 PM
Good luck finding a job, Brandon, and I really really hope you don't have to sell stuff you care about.

03-01-2007, 05:35 PM
sorry to hear the news. Hang in there and good luck with the job search. I agree with those above who said DON'T sell your drums and coachella ticket. You only live once, so make sure you enjoy it no matter what the situation.

03-01-2007, 05:42 PM

As my dad once said, "Life's too short to drink cheap wine."

08-28-2007, 03:38 PM
6 months later...

I just received a phone call confirming my hiring at the SD Natural History Museum as an A/V Tech. I'm excited. The best part though, is that I have 1.5 unemployment checks left, and I only interviewed for 2 jobs. I did end up selling a drum set though. So I could buy these:

New hobby.

I gotta tell ya, this is some tasty fucking lemonade.

08-28-2007, 03:44 PM
I always had a thing for the A/V guys in high school.

08-28-2007, 03:44 PM

08-28-2007, 04:09 PM
Congrats on the new job! As for the drumset...Looks to me like a very sweet trade off there...

08-28-2007, 09:14 PM
Yay Brandon, I am happy for you.

When do we get to hear you spin some sick beats? I would like to have a dance party please.

08-28-2007, 09:15 PM
Nice work. You win the board.

08-28-2007, 09:24 PM

08-28-2007, 09:31 PM
Shouldn't that be "SD SERIOUS"? Don't you fail at relevant stone cats?

08-28-2007, 09:35 PM
John, you've been pretty lippy lately. I sway between liking it and wanting to kill you.

08-29-2007, 07:04 AM
Nice set up. Maybe you can ask to spin a set at work.

08-29-2007, 09:17 AM
Hooray for Brandon.

08-29-2007, 09:20 AM
Never in my life have I wanted to hug someone this much before.
