Surrounded by family and friends, Vic Chesnutt died in Athens Georgia Friday 25 December at 14:59"

In the few short years that we knew him personally, Vic transformed our sense of what true character, grace and determination are all about. Our grief is inexpressible and Vic's absence unfathomable," the announcement said.

Kristin Hersh has set up a website for those who want to donate to help Chesnutt's family with expenses. "What this man was capable of was superhuman," she writes.

45-year-old Athens, Georgia singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt is currently in a coma, various sources report. According to Tweets from Chesnutt's friend Kristin Hersh, the coma is a result of a suicide attempt, but that has not been confirmed.

Chesnutt's current label, Constellation Records, which put out his album At the Cut earlier this year, released the following statement, according to Entertainment Weekly: "Vic is in the middle of a serious medical situation, he is in a coma, and his family and friends are with him. We have no comment right now on the specifics other than that his doctors are continuing to assess his condition. We will issue a full statement at an appropriate time. In the interim, we request that everybody respect Vic's privacy and that of his family."

Vic Chesnutt has released over a dozen albums since the early 90s, collaborating with everyone from Michael Stipe, Lambchop, and Elf Power to Widespread Panic, Van Dyke Parks, and A Silver Mount Zion. The 1996 tribute album Sweet Relief II featured covers of Chesnutt songs by Madonna, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, Sparklehorse, Indigo Girls, and more.

Chesnutt has been in a wheelchair since the age of 18, when he was in a car accident.
