10th year. 27th - 29th May.

Tickets already on sale at Seetickets (even though there is no mention of it on the Primavera website). It was first listed on Seetickets as Primavera featuring Pavement, so I'm thinking they'll be there.

Also, previous atttendees can log into the site and vote for their top 5 artists from the years they attended. The festival will approach the most popular acts to play again in May.

It's astounding to me how Pavement seems to be approaching Radiohad and Daft Punk status. I like them and all but all of the sudden they are headliners? They weren't even headliners or capable of doing an arena tour at their peak!

Primavera is a much smaller affair than Coachella. Apart from Neil Young, I can't think of anyone who has headlined there in the last 3 years who could headline Coachella.

They still aren't. Although I am surprised how many tickets they sold to those central park shows so quickly.

Pavement have that Pixies "slow build during their absence" thing going for 'em.
Maybe not on the same scale, but just like with the Pixies during their absence I think there was a LOT of viral word of mouth passing around of their stuff.

Me too. How many shows are they doing, like 4? Who do they think they are?!!

:lool Good for em' they will ride this buzz long enough to make a bunch of dough and do a bunch of shows. They have already stated they don't plan on making any new music yet and all these shows will basically be the old stuff. They better get in the studio soon unless they just wanted to cash in on nostalgia like the Pixies as HandBanana has stated.

so how does primavera work?
is it like coachella where everyone shows up to a specific location and there are various stages? or is it more like SXSW/CMJ where it is in Barcelona but you go around the city to various venues/stages?

suprefan
11-12-2009, 04:56 PM
Estrella Damm Primavera Sound Festival is an event that takes place in Barcelona, Spain, usually between May and June. Since 2005 the festival moved to the Parc del Fòrum site.

The festival collaborates closely with All Tomorrow's Parties who curates one of the four big stages. ATP takes place one week earlier and many of the acts on that festival also perform on this festival. The festival attracts approximately 60.000 visitors per edition. Also, daytime performances take place in a park somewhere else in Barcelona. These smaller performances have a free entrance. In the week before the festival, several showcase nights take place in clubs and venues.

sonofhal

Depends who you bought it from. If you are having tickets sent, it should be easy to move them on. If you are collecting them it'll be impossible.

The majority of the shows are at one venue, the Parc Del Forum, with various stages set up a la Coachella. It's open air with hard concrete everywhere. No grass. There is an indoor seated venue right there too where they have select shows during the fest (Portishead played indoors and outdoors at the '08 Primavera). As sonofhal mentioned, there are showcase shows around the city in the days prior to the fest proper. I don't know any of those venues.

Guys, I cannot recommend Barcelona and this festival enough. They are both truly wonderful.

I've checked out shows at the tiny Sidecar and at Sala Apolo in the past. Both are fairly decent venues. There are some free shows in the Parc Miro early on Sat and Sun, for those who get up early (Bowerbirds, Plants & Animals and Kimya Dawson did sets in the parc this year).

Plus you can watch sunset AND sunrise sets. The sunrise ones are better, as the sun comes up seemingly out of the mediterranean sea. It's cool walking back to your hotel in the crisp sunlight.

I wonder who will play 2 sets this year.

suprefan
12-02-2009, 04:34 PM
Has there always been an act that does 2 set Chris? And how is the schedule? Not full of crazy conflicts like some fests?

sonofhal
12-03-2009, 01:29 AM
The last 2 years have seen one major act do 2 sets. Last year it was MBV. The year before it was Portishead. One set will be on one of the large outdoor stages, the other inside the auditori forum (an all seated soundproofed venue within the site - no soundbleed for the quieter acts).

The schedule can be quite clashtastic at times (what do you expect with a lineup this good?) but not as bad as Coachella (as it runs longer -'til 6am - so the acts have a bit more of a gap between them).

Also, most acts get at least 50 mins, and you tend to be able to see at least 30 mins of each if you don't want to miss anyone. The main stage will only have 3 or 4 acts on a day, but they will all do full sets (or 3 hr long ones if you are Neil Young).

There are 6 stages in all, plus 2 acoustic tents (where acts do a 2nd short acoustic set)

There is also minimusica. This is a kids area where bands on the lineup do covers of nursery rhymes. It's like a creche. You can leave your brats there while you go off and watch some ear bleeding music.

Parc del Forum (the place were Primavera Sound is located since 2005) is really huge (6 stages playin bands simultaneously with space for 60.000 ppl more or less). They not sold out on past editions but on 2010 they're celebrating the 10th anniversary and the line-up seems to be attractive enough to sell out.

What's the capacity for the auditorium?

Just a few thousand (I'd have to check the exact #). What they did for Portishead (at least) was you had to get another ticket (2Euro or so) for the auditorium specifically and, iirc, it was only available on the day of the show. I distinctly remember getting there early. I can't remember if I had to get a ticket for the Swell Season's set in the auditorium.

When the auditorium opened up for Portishead, it was kind of a free-for-all and I ended up sitting in an aisleway. It was an astonishing show overall. I wish I had been closer so I could have taken part in the stage invasion at the end!

In '08, they also had a myspace tent where various acts would swing by and play a few songs; no stage, no big PA, they just stood and played and everyone gathered around. Saw Malkmus play solo and caught a bit of Man Man doing the same.

In '08, they also had a myspace tent where various acts would swing by and play a few songs; no stage, no big PA, they just stood and played and everyone gathered around. Saw Malkmus play solo and caught a bit of Man Man doing the same.

Interesting. Oh yeah, forgot about the stage invasion.

Hmmmmmm

Apparently of the acts left to be added, there are 2 hip hop acts/artists (one of which will be a poster head), 2 acts for the ATP stage (one of which was highly demanded on the Primavera forums) and a few more acts for the other stages (among them another poster head).

Janes Addiction - who can tell? The version of the poster may well have been a mock up when they thought it was a lock, but then it fell through. Hopefully should find out one way or another today.

Well, guess there might be some more...

Among the new artists confirmed to play at the Forum next 27th, 28th and 29th of May the most outstanding is the presence for the first time in our country of Van Dyke Parks, mainly known thanks to his work with Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, although he has a long career in which he has produced records for artists like Randy Newman and Ry Cooder and has released many solo records including classics like "Song Cycle" and "Discover America". Van Dyke’s performance is part of his tour with Clare And The Reasons, he collaborates with them and the New Yorkers repay the favour in part of his show. At the festival Clare And The Reasons will present their record “Arrow”, a record which follows the path of their debut "The Movie", pop with intricate arrangements and a jazzy aftertaste.

Other noteworthy confirmations are the Rother/Shelley/Mullan project, superband formed by Steve Shelley (drummer of Sonic Youth), Michael Rother (frontman of the mythical Neu! and member of one of the first formations of Kraftwerk and Harmonia) and Aaron Mullan (from the New York band Tall Firs and collaborator of people like Chris Corsano). The unclassifiable Chrome Hoof (somebody tried to define them as doom disco), the lo-fi pop of the Texas band Harlem and the Seville band Pony Bravo are the other bands that have confirmed their attendance at the imminent edition of San Miguel Primavera Sound.

Below are some of the parallel activities of the festival ("Primavera A La Ciutat"). On Saturday 22nd of May the now traditional cycle of concerts in the underground will take place (“Primavera Sound Baixa Al Metro”) with the concerts of The Nu Niles, Internet 2, Blackbird and 3Mellizas. On Wednesday 26th in the Apolo there will be the "Wichita 10th Anniversary Party" showcase, where Los Campesinos!, the Swedish band First Aid Kit and Peggy Sue will play. And finally Diploide from Valladolid and The Big Head Troubled Boy, project of Mia Salazar from Barcelona along with British musicians will join the concerts which will take place in Parc Joan Miró ("Primavera Al Parc") on the 29th and 30th of May.

The access to the shows in the Metro stations is granted with a valid Metro ticket. The access to shows at Parc Joan Miro is free. The access to the pre-festival showcases is granted with the San Miguel Primavera Sound 2010 full festival ticket.

Fuck Primavera's lineup is too good.

there are some decent acts in the mid tier, but are the pixies and pavement really worth travelling for?

PotVsKtl
03-10-2010, 01:05 PM
Primavera is entirely about the mid-tier acts. If you're trying to decide based on one of the "headliners" they get you shouldn't be going.

Devin the Dude
03-10-2010, 01:07 PM
Yeah, the headliners are definitely the weaker part of this festival.

PotVsKtl
03-10-2010, 01:10 PM
They're not weak, they're superfluous. Take off every semi well known act and if you're still not blown away by the lineup it's not for you.

Weak headliners are all the rage this year. Primavera could only manage two of the most influential bands ever.
