I don't really see that as being relevant. Popular is popular. I don't know any Mexican bands, but i'm sure there's some insanely popular Mexican black metal band that's one of the most popular fucking things in the Mexico scene. Nonetheless, you ain't seeing it on the main at Coachella. Mars Volta could be national fucking heroes of Mexico for all I care.

like i said, i agree with you, mars volta won't play mainstage after sunset, but an insanely popular mexican shitmetal band won't play on the mainstage at coachella because they don't have crossover appeal, mars volta does. i think mars volta could play the mainstage after sunset, but goldenvoice would have to be pretty desperate, and the rest of the lineup would probably be fairly depressing if that were to happen.

01-08-2010, 05:20 AM
Okay fine, let's see if we can agree on this while I take exception with something you just said:

Mexican tastes in music might be shitty enough that Mars Volta is a legitimate band there, but to whatever extent they have crossover success it is limited only to a tuneless hipster minority of faggots here in the states.

Deal?

You'd think people would have had enough MGMT's counterpart, Passion Pit, by now.

I always thought this sounded more akin to the way it is.

We know Bowie, Daft Punk, Radiohead, etc. are not playing and we know that Muse i headlining for sure with a high chance of Gorillaz, Beastie Boys, Orbital and Rolling Stones (or another huge band). In 2008, no one saw Jack Johnson or Roger Waters coming. In 2009 we knew the Killers, didn't know Paul (or didn't believe he would) play until close to the release and had no clue the Cure were even asked.

A friend of mine saw them at Treasure Island in October and told me they said something about that possibly being one if their last shows. He also said they played some newer music that was really different from their last album and people weren't as into it.

They said that this would be the last show 'for a while', and went on to explain that they wouldn't be performing until their new album is released, or at least done. I think this still makes them possible-to-likely at Coachella. Even though the audience was a little stand-offish at TI, I thought MGMT put on an epic show. Would love to see 'em again.

I don't get the Passion Pit hate. First time I saw them was in 2008, opening up for Yelle. I had no idea who they were, and I was at the back of the venue drinking. They started playing, and I thought they sounded pretty good. About three song in my fiancee and I decided to go watch them and we had a blast. I downloaded their EP and I remember the songs sounded pretty damn close to exactly the same live, even the singers voice. I thought Manners was decent, mostly hit and miss. What I am trying to say is, if there are no conflicts at all, I would definitely check out Passion Pit at Coachella.

I believe Monklish had a "personal guarantee" stamp on acts that were never on the lineup last year... so I figured I'd offer a confirmation from the band itself.

I don't think it's any stretch to say a ton of people on this message board will be dissapointed when the line up comes out. It happens every. single. year. And why is this? Because music tastes are very personal and thousands of people in an online community rarely agree on them. Unless you're talking about Radiohead and Daft Punk on this message board.

Iglu and Hartly, what is that about 2 years late?

And yeah Monklish/Supre had them confirmed since early December or something. I know we're all tired of her but her list should at least be considered. That's what made last year so fun. Yes, FUN.

brian wilson maybe? wishful thinking . . . .

I kid you not, I had a weird dream last night. In it, I saw the Coachella Poster and Brian Wilson was one of the headliners. It was presented in some wierd flash video, where the names were popping out at you. I also recall Explosions in the Sky were on there. When I woke up in the morning I recalled another name, but its not coming to me as I'm typing this.

Well we can agree to disagree then, but I still believe people get too tied up in the Radiohead name to see the music soberly

It's not about the name, it's about the music. And it does sound like you are being reactionary.

Which is totally fine and valid. We just disagree. It happens.
But I really believe that if In Rainbows werent released under the Radiohead brand, no one would talk about it anymore.

What are you trying to say, that anyone could have made In Rainbows?

And we have differing opinions on that.
Neither of us are going to convince the other either way.
There's no such thing as empirical data on that stuff.

There isn't... except when you're talking about Radiohead. Then the empirical data is as follows:

Is it after 1996? Then Radiohead was better.

How do you feel about Liars being out? I thought you were a fan, but if not, forgive me.

I'm not trying to convince you of anything. I'm just pointing out that your opinion is currently unjustified.

Comparing Radiohead to Foals is quite unfair to the latter. Though Antidotes is a fantastic album and they're great live. I can hear that it's good music and all but by Radiohead's standards, In Rainbows is sort of boring...

I don't think there's any point in hanging on to the Foals comparison. HB was just using that as an off-hand example. That said, I disagree with HB's opinion almost in full. I'm sure there are some people who are blinded by the Radiohead name. But when I sit down and listen to an album I think I'm pretty good at being able to tell shit from gold. Of course, none of us can ever know whether or not we'd like In Rainbows if it was our first Radiohead album, but hey I think it's better than Amnesiac, which was more "innovative."

Yeah, the Foals album is alright. I'm never compelled to listen to it, but I won't throw it off of my iPod. There is no way in hell that it's anywhere in the same league as In Rainbows. Phil's drumming is better than anything that Foals can ever do.

Is there a good version of the leak out? I haven't listen to it yet.

Well it's a chill album no doubt. Boring I guess if you're not into something being chill from beginning to end. There are no crashing guitar noises like HttT, but it's also more perfect all the way through. One song flows into the other.

I actually like the overall sound of Hail better (even best) but I think In Rainbows is just crafted better.

Your perception of Radiohead closely resembles my own. In Rainbows is a far cry from the analog digital rock they helped to create, but rather a different, more soothing side of Radiohead.

I couldn't rate their albums if I wanted to. They invoke such different feelings for me.

Although I would put Pablo Honey at the bottom if I needed to.

Pablo Honey above Hail obzen? Daring.

I just think Where I End and You Begin alone destroys Pablo Honey as a whole.
