Coldplay is strongly influenced by Radiohead. Muse is strongly influenced by Meat Loaf. It's a substantial difference.

I think Rage Against The Machine is more of an influence to them than Meat Loaf. I'm not kidding, the members of Muse almost idolize Rage.

Well, the Meat Loaf comment was a joke. But that's funny you say that, my friends and I have always discussed how we think Muse's riffs and guitar playing are profoundly Tom Morello-esque, and I thought that was just our own speculation... glad to see we're not the only ones with that thought... the band has actually spoken about their influence/admiration?

TommyboyUNM

Yeah they have. Matt even plays Rage riffs in between songs during their shows.

I would watch Meat Loaf. As long as he didn't play anything from Bat Out of Hell III.

Ahhh I could have sworn I heard a Rage riff at the end of "Stockholm Syndrome" the one time I saw them, can't remember which one, but I think that's what sparked the initial discussion. There you have it.

Just came out of the Mew show. Spoke to a band rep and he said that they're coming back to tour in April. Of course I asked if they're playing Coachella and he confirmed it...

Nice, won't be seeing them. Put 'em against a good Sahara act.

Oh, sorry "4th line." Anything below 3rd line I consider the bottom tier of the lineup, no big difference. I just hope there's some good loud, punkish noisy bands playing this year. Sunday was so excellent last year with Vivian Girls > No Age > Fucked Up , YYYs > MBV > The Cure > Throbbing Gristle. I'm so sick of the pansy yupster stuff that makes your balls want to ascend upward and then come back 2 hours later as ovaries. This is why I wish we had an ATP that wasn't out in the New York mountains or a festival more like Primavera Sound. Coachella gets big names but they also get a lot of "safe" names.

MAYBE I WON'T. I actually haven't 100% committed to it, yet. I like to go just for the experience and to chill out, but as my tastes in music evolve, I've been finding myself less excited by the names on the poster. My wishlist would be anything shoegaze, anything with Hope Sandoval, Fuck Buttons, HEALTH, Abe Vigoda, No Age, Liars, Blur because they're only Brit pop band I've ever really loved, I heard Baroness is playing which is cool, I'd be up for some Isis, Sunn O))), Boris, Boredoms, Sonic Youth, Ecstatic Sunshine, Gun Outfit, Jesu, anything with Bradford Cox, Xiu Xiu or Former Ghosts, Dino Jr., Lightning Bolt, Oneida, Japandroids and I really want to see Sunny Day Real Estate there.

This is all fine, and I am sure some of them will be there, but this isn't a festival that is catered to your tastes alone. It's not catered to my tastes alone either. The lineup is great every year, and your claim that they are getting a lot of "safe" names is pretty baseless, especially since you have no idea who all is playing until you see an official poster on the homepage. Right now you are complaining about Mew, one of probably 120 bands that will be at the festival. You know what will be going on at the same time as Mew? 4 other stages, the Do Lab, the dome, the art, the food and the people watching. If that is not enough, you probably shouldn't purchase tickets.

Hold on, where is the "official" confirmation? We all know that they are playing... but I don't think we have recieved official confirmation from either the band or Coachella.

Pitchfork released their full tour list and the three Coachella dates are listed as Indio, Californ (http://pitchfork.com/news/tours/881-muse-announce-additional-spring-tour-dates/)ia.

There are only two types of official confirmations and Muse has satisfied neither

Confirmed by Alchemy is the greatest satisfaction.

So where are they going to kill time for 2 weeks to play another festival..

Why do they have to play more shows in that 2-week span? Can't they just live their lives for 2 weeks then play?

And you people seem to think that the laws space, time, and travel don't apply to musicians. Meaning, it takes less than a week to get from Indio to New Orleans. Why would Pearl Jam playing a fest in New Orleans disqualify them from playing Coachella a week earlier? I honestly don't know the intricacies of all of this, but it would stand to reason that they could do both.

The Jazz Heritage Festival and Coachella are both owned by AEG and never have they shared headliners before. They have shared a few big acts in the past (like one or two) and is why i think The Dead Weather are a lock now, but I don't think they would ever share a headliner because they are only a couple of weeks a part and you wouldn't want to compete with yourself like that.

This is actually a good point. I might be underestimating Pearl Jam's draw. They might have a rabid fan base that would decide between seeing them in New Orleans and seeing them at Coachella.

faxman75
12-16-2009, 09:29 AM
I disagree. I think it's a silly point. The Jazz and Heritage fest and Coachella are two completely different fests on opposite sides of the country. The "rabid fan base" will be there for any huge band and that fan base will see them multiple times in multiple cities regardless as we all do for some of our favorite bands. So deciding between seeing Pearl Jam at Coachella or Jazz Fest is no different than that fan base deciding on seeing a show in San Francisco or New York.

Summerkid if you are saying the two festivals have shared a few big names in the past, I wouldn't disqualify headliners just because it hasn't happened as of yet. These two festivals are not competing for the same audience.

Monklish
12-16-2009, 09:33 AM

12-16-2009, 09:57 AM
After the 2004 Jazz Fest lost $900,000, the Jazz and Heritage Foundation board put production of the festival out to bid. The board eventually voted to retain Davis and Wein, but demanded certain financial guarantees.

Davis went looking for a partner with deep pockets. He found one in AEG Live, the international concert industry powerhouse that had initially bid against him.

Leeartlee

Okay, then that pretty much clears this idea that AEG would never share headliners because they haven't done it before. A five year reign is not that long. And as was stated above, the two events are pretty god damn far from one another. Its been discussed ad nauseum before but for must people, they festival they end up going to is the one that is closest, not who has the headliners they want to see.

12-16-2009, 10:09 AM

I never said anything about proximity not being a big deal, check the tape. The point is that if you have Pearl Jam headlining both festivals any PJ fans from the eastern part of the country are going to be inclined to go to Jazz fest instead of Coachella. Which is why the proximity argument supports my claim more than yours. The number of people deciding on New Orleans or Coachella based on the lineup can't be proven by either of us. Yeah you were just telling Faxman if he lived in Florida Coachella wouldn't even be on his radar. I don't get how that supports your claim that they compete for the same customers if you think they wouldn't compete for Faxman, who has 16.6 thousand posts on a festival board.

""Forty percent of the attendees this year came from out of the state," says Tollett. "We had all fifty states represented, and visitors from thirty-two countries."

very interesting. thanks for sharing that!

This only deals with the proximity aspect. Step two is finding out how many of that 40% were contemplating Jazz Fest fucko.

I think what he was saying is that if you are going to go to a festival specifically to see one band, and they were playing at two festivals across the country from each other, you would most likely choose the one closest to you. Therefore it is not in Goldenvoice's best interest to have the same headliner at both festivals as they want the maximum amount of people at both shows.

I don't recall saying that Coachella wouldn't even be on his radar at all. You keep making up things I said and missing what I was obviously pointing at.

who cares. point is Its very very very unlikely that AEG would book the same headliner for two festivals it owns that are only separated by two weeks because (which we have established) they would be competing with each other.

Untrue.

And PTA, I would, but if I made an actual account and posted something that I thought was worthwhile (and oh I have thought about it), my asshole would not be prepared for the tearing that would come with getting flamed by Monklish, because it is his life's mission to deter new people from joining the boards, whether they agree with him or not.

And since Monklish is almost always right, I cannot because my dreams of participating on this board in a constructive manner are not yet ready to be crushed.

There may be a few people that look at the lineups for both the Jazz Fest and Coachella before deciding which to go to, but I doubt its many. For example, I live about a 5 hour drive from Jazz Fest or a 4 hour flight from Coachella. And I'm not even fucking considering Jazz Fest. And I'm sure everybody thinks exactly like me so this conversation is dead. FML.

No, not on a regular basis. Which is why I'm all the more stoked the fuck out.

I live on my own so I try my luck about once a month or so in hopes that I can get lucky and not have to worry about running a tight ship at the end of the month.

Needless to say though, I don't have to worry about my 3-day pass this time around.
