It all falls back to this: If Jack Johnson can headline, virtually anyone can.

Yeah, pretty much.

I think everyone is really missing the point over whether or not The Gorillaz can headline. This is what I will call the "Macca" argument. If one of your headliners is massive then the other headliners don't really need to be all that big to sell tickets. Yes, the Killers and The Cure probably sold tickets on their own. But nowhere NEAR the draw that McCartney is/was. That being said, if your big headliner is Bowie (highly unlikely) or The Rolling Stones (looking more likely by the day) then the other headliners could be fucking AFI and a scarecrow of Thom Yorke and the festival will still sell tickets.

No, fuck AFI. I don't care if a supergroup of surviving members of the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, the Who, Rolling Stones, Bowie, and U2 joined forces for a 5 hour set one night, I don't want shit like AFI polluting the field the next day.

It fully applies to Gorillaz, meaning they will headline if they're on the bill just based off of this.

No shit, and if Lady Gaga had another year or two under her belt with another "huge" record about to come out, it'd be hard not seeing her billed as a potential headliner if it were taken seriously. You see, the whole Madonna thing threw some people off I think, but the whole Jack Johnson thing reaffirmed how status and sales really do factor in, regardless of how accepted you are by the Coachella consensus.

relax Erik, I was just using that as a example. Not saying that a shitty act like AFI will ever headline Coachella but my main point is Coachella can experiment with smaller headliners in lieu of a major one. just like with Jack Johnson/The Killers/Muse/Gorillaz/etc.

Another example of what Marco is saying is with 2007. When you have a reunion as stellar as RAtM, it doesn't really matter who else is headlining the other 2 days - you'll sell out the 3 day passes.

12-13-2009, 08:48 PM
oh and just throwing my 2 cents in here: IF The Gorillaz are there/headline/sub headline/etc. I fully expect them to do so with LOADS of guest stars like Lou Reed, Mos Def, Del La Soul, etc.

BINGO! Or even in 06 when it was the Non-headliners of Madonna and Daft Punk really driving the tickets.

If Lady Gaga is still in the popular psyche 20 years after Sonic Youth makes an experimental dance album named "Gaga Youth", then we can discuss her attending.

Oh yeah!

I hear you talking when I'm on the street,
Your mouth don't move but I can hear you speak.
What's the matter with the boy?
He don't come around no more,
Is he checking out for sure?
Is he gonna close the door on me?

I'm always hearing voices on the street,
I want to shout, but I can't hardly speak.
I was making love last night
To a dancer friend of mine.
I can't seem to stay in step,
'Cause she come ev'ry time that she pirouettes over me.

And I only get my rocks off while I'm dreaming,
I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping.

I'm zipping through the days at lightning speed.
Plug in, flush out and fire the fuckin' feed.
Heading for the overload,
Splattered on the dirty road,
Kick me like you've kicked before,
I can't even feel the pain no more.

But I only get my rocks off while I'm dreaming, (only get them off)
I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping.

Feel so hypnotized, can't describe the scene.
Its all mesmerized all that inside me.
The sunshine bores the daylights out of me.
Chasing shadows moonlight mystery.
Headed for the overload,
Splattered on the dirty road,
Kick me like you've kicked before,
I can't even feel the pain no more.

But I only get my rocks off while I'm dreaming (only get them off, get them off),
I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping (only get them off, get them off).

So Stones it is!

You're the kind of person you meet at certain dismal dull affairs.
Center of a crowd, talking much too loud running up and down the stairs.
Well, it seems to me that you have seen too much in too few years.
And though you've tried you just can't hide your eyes are edged with tears.

You better stop, look around, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes,
Here it comes. Here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown.

When you were a child you were treated kind
But you were never brought up right.
You were always spoiled with a thousand toys but still you cried all night.
Your mother who neglected you woes a million dollars tax.
And your father's still perfecting ways of making ceiling wax.

You better stop, look around, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes,
Here it comes. Here comes your nilne-teenth nervous breakdown.

Oh, who's to blame, that girl's just insane.
Well nothing I do don't seem to work,
It only seems to make matters worse. Oh please.

You were still in school when you had that fool who really messed your mind.
And after that you turned your back on treating people kind.
On our first trip I tried so hard to rearrange your mind.
But after while I realized you were disarranging mine.

You better stop, look around, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes,
Here it comes. Here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown.

As do I. In fact, I think we can thank Phish for giving Paul T that idea.

I wanna tell you 'bout a dance
That's goin' around,
Everybody's doin' it
From the grownups down.
Don't move your head,
Don't move your hands,
Don't move your lips,
Just shake your hips.
Do the hip shake, babe,
Do the hip shake, babe,
Shake your hip, babe,
Shake your hip, babe.

What you don't know
Don't be afraid
Just listen to me
And do what I say.
Don't move your head,
Don't move your hands,
Don't move your lips,
Just shake your hips.
Do the hip shake, babe,
Do the hip shake, babe,
Shake your hip, babe,
Shake your hip, babe,
Well ain't that easy

Well, I met a little girl
In a country town
She said, "What do you know
There's Slim Harpo!"
Didn't move her head,
Didn't move her hands,
Didn't move her lips,
Just shook her hips.
Do the hip shake, babe,
Do the hip shake, babe,
Shake your hip, babe,
Shake your hip, babe,
Well ain't that easy.

COACHELLA is all about your own personal experience and what you make of it....

guest-1185
12-14-2009, 01:04 AM
Ok, if you never leave the campground you'd better have a compelling explanation, otherwise then yes, you're doing it wrong.

Personally I like doing a little bit of everything to experience as mush as I can.
-2pm smaller bands in the tents
-camping out a few bands before a headliner for prime positioning
-losing your mind in the Sahara after dark
-at least one gobi/mojave set after dark
-mid afternoon 10000000000 degree sets at the outdoor
-a few dancing sessions in the do lab
-laying in the grass and just chilling in the Sahara ~1-3pm
etc. etc.

So much to do, so little time.

If that was case wouldn't they have offered it for Roger Waters or Paul McCartney year?

Plus, as mentioned above, they can just come for the Rolling Stones day and leave.

If the other headliners pan out I can't imagine hardcore old school Stones fans loving on Muse/Gorillaz/Beastie Boys or whoever may headline the other days.

apparently it worked really well for the ppl that went and saw phish there for 3 days too, i agree and think this makes the stones alot more likely to play, and i saw numerous ppl in the last 3 years that had 3 day passes that were basically only there for one band; rage, waters, or macca

-laying in the grass and just chilling in the Sahara ~1-3pm
etc. etc.

So much to do, so little time.

im not syaing i dont leave the campground, infact im usually the one ditching all my friends to get in the gates around noon or one....

but yeah some of my friends just party in the campground all day and come in after the sun goes down.

So I went to 2 years of Stagecoach and the crowd wasn't old. There were lots of younger fans.

You guys are also assuming the Stones are playing without an official confirmation.

There are lots of assumptions going on here based on non proven data.

Yes people do buy 3 day passes for 1 headliner but that still doesn't make me believe that the camping change is because of the Rolling Stones.

Also, people buying 3 day passes for 1 headliner doesn't always equal a sell out either.

Also, as people get older inconvience annoys them more. Most elderly people don't want to sit in a dusty Polo Field dirt lot for 2 days with nothing going on.

The one thing that will blow if the stones play is you'll have ppl, mainly older ppl, camping the main stage all day because they aren't interested in hearing anything else there. For anyone with any remote hope of The Kinks happening next year:

The Kinks' Ray Davies has said he wants to work on new material with his brother Dave.

If Davies' plans come into fruition, it will be the first time the duo have worked together since 1996, when The Kinks split. Ray said the two have already spoken about reuniting, though he told News Of The World that it may depend on how well his brother - who suffered a stroke in 2004 - can play.

"I suggested he do some low-key shows to see how well he can play. If we're going to play together again, we can't hit the road straight away with a big-time announcement," Ray explained.

"But, if Dave feels good about it and there's good new material that we can write, it'll happen."

Ray also revealed that he is planning to release an album of duets in 2010. Although he kept details to a minimum, he admitted that "Bruce Springsteen has expressed an interest" in the project.

I doubt they bring the rising platform stage thingys if they play. I mean, logistically that doesn't sound feasible. I think you're looking more at a KROQ Acoustic Xmas setup but with more lights and stuff.

no.

they will bring full production to the desert. it will already be here and they brought their full production when they headlined kinda last-minute at ACL in 2007.

The three giant screens.... Definately. The floating stage... I doubt it, it seems like it would take way to much set up time and idk if the main stage is big enough to support that set up. Granted I haven't seen the size of the stage they use on tour

Boycott if this happens. I could maybe see her sub-headlining like M.I.A but nothing more.

It makes total sense. You remember the thread where you talked about how you wanted to work at GV some day after divulging (theoretical) secrets about the lineup you'd heard? Then you went back and erased them when everyone pointed out that that probably wasn't a good way to get in GV's good graces?

Well I'm pretty sure they frown on people going "I KNOW SOMETHING YOU DONT KNOW NYAH NYAH NYAH" too.

No. I said I'll be WORKING in the MUSIC BUSINESS and will probably come into contact with people. I don't need to explain myself to you, though. Seems you've done a fine job with having a respectable career.

Weird. Friday must be super sub-par compared to the weekend, then.

Honestly, I'm pretty much alright with the Stones. They're so old that they are inoffensive to me, and whatever is going on in the Sahara is going to be pretty fucking awesome anyway.

Leathery skin scares me more than ravers. I'm with you on this.

OK, so the Daft Punk stuff I said was wrong; it came from my Devo/Pavement source, so I believed it.

HOWEVER...Everything else I know...Well, bring on the haterade. I'll take cash bets, too.

Remember last year when everyone was in denial about The Killers and saying there is no way they will headline and will be subs at best... I think that is what Kat is feeling about Muse right now. The rest of us, whether you like them or not, have accepted Muse as headliners.

Last year, right before Coachella, The Killers headlined a venue that holds roughly 7,000 people. This year, right before Coachella, Muse is headlining a venue that holds roughly 11,000 people. Not saying Vancouver determines headliner status at Coachella, Im not saying that at all. Im just saying it is a good indicator.

The Rolling Stones came from the Buddyhead blog which I have no idea how realiable it is. All I know is that none of the special guests promised at the Buddyhead Christmas at the Hotel Cafe showed up.

And the Gorillaz is from the unofficial Gorillaz news source.

Both give me serious doubts.

While the timing was there, they could have both just gotten lucky releasing it right before the dates were announced.

Also, I don't buy that RV and Car camping are because of the Stones.

But that's me, I'm skeptical.

On side note, everyone was joking when they were talking about that ticketing issue, right?

my thought process is the last time I sold tickets without a line up was back in 2007. So logic would tell me they have an act(s)that can sell this mo fo out and are trying to let the fans of the festival purchase tickets 1st.
