It would make sense considering they completely skipped so cal.

I know most people on here don't care about Phish but the Empire Polo Field would be an awesome place to see them.

Especially if it was done as a Halloween festival.

I'm all for this show, as long as I can get tix. I don't think I can ride that emotional roller coaster again.

I would go to this if I had the time and money...isn't Halloween usually when they perform entire album covers? Maybe they will finally pull out Loveless..

higgybaby23
06-23-2009, 11:32 AM
^It would be very timely to do Loveless, what with the MBV reunion and such. I was just telling friends the other day that Phish turned me onto MBV. Trey has said that it is one of his favorite albums ever and that he had a vision of perfoming Loveless with 4 or 5 different guitar monitors, all with different outputs. In other words, he wants to play all of the layered guitar parts at once, keen.

It's a bit cooler, but still warm. Think Coachella, but about 5-10 degrees cooler. So at coachella it's about 90-100, during late Oct. it's usually 80-90's. It's pretty cold at night though.

My second ever Phish show was Halloween 1998, when they covered the Velvet Underground's Loaded. It was awesome, they played three insane sets at the Thomas and Mack, which is close to the Las Vegas Strip. Good times were had by all.

The Loveless rumor was going around during that time period, as well as The Dark Side of the Moon, which they performed in its entirety at the very next show (West Valley City, Utah).

Too bad my wife's favorite holiday is Halloween (she doesn't care for Phish at all).

To score our Halloween '98 tix we drove from Phoenix to the The Thomas and Mack's box office in Las Vegas, which was definitely worth it.

If they play at the Polo Fields, doesn't that mean they have a midnight curfew? I doubt the lack of a huge festival would make a difference to the residents. And better yet, would anyone really give a fuck about it?

Well considering that Prince played til 1 in the morning, and Macca went til almost the same timen plus others over the years. I do not think it will matter, but they will start playing at like 8:30 so they can do their set.

suprefan
06-27-2009, 11:04 AM
The same thing that happens at any phish festival, everyone just selling stuff, doing drugs, eating food and listening to music. And they might have a few bands, but it probably wont be some crazy multi stage thing. A Phish show is already an event for most of this audience so....

It will more than likely just be Phish performing multiple sets per day. And if they do a musical costume (cover an album) on Halloween then they will perform at least 3 sets that evening. They have also done stuff in the past where they do jam sessions in the wee hours of the morning while traveling on the back of a semi trailer. All in all their festivals have a high level of production value and smoothness of operation.

It's just Phish

Friday - Sound check, 2 sets
Saturday - 3 sets
Sunday - 3 sets

I'm sure there will be artwork/fun things to look at and most likely a ferris wheel too!

I really really hope it's true... and that I can get tickets for it for a not-completely-outrageous price. The idea of going to another music festival on the polo fields is like a dream come true for me, that place is my favorite place on Earth and I always wished I could go there more than once a year.

But I still can't believe it's true because of the midnight curfew thing.

What is the general consensus in the Phish phan camp? Are there other places strongly rumored or is this the only one?

I edited that part out because it would give people like you the wrong impression. I ate a chocolate mushroom beforehand but it was very, very light and I barely felt it. The hardcore fans will disagree with me, but if you've never heard a Phish song listen to "Free" off of their album 'Billy Breathes'. I hadn't heard much Phish when I was young and my friend who got his license before me had that song on a mix tape and we used to listen to it all the time and it really opened my mind to the band.

It's a very simple song but has a wicked guitar solo and gives you a good, concise idea of what Trey's voice is like.

^ I would think I was hallucinating if I saw dogs running around a casino, that just sounds so not-Vegas to me.

Exactly and it's Halloween to boot.

I really like Billy Breathes, they came up with the album after a trip to the Caribbean. Next in line for me is the Story of the Ghost and then Farmhouse. Of course it's all about their live shows, which always delve into all of their albums.

Or just get the free Hampton Reunion Shows off phish.com, it's equally as great.

Of the four Halloween "costume" sets, which do you guys like the best?

I'm a fan of their version of Remain in Light. It's just different enough to be awesome. The White Album is really good as well, but Remain in light is more wild.

Yeah I'm not sure who actually saw a full set. I definitely remember Paul saying he enjoyed Phish quite a bit... dunno how much he anticipated it beforehand though. Didn't you watch Phish with other boardies on Sunday night?

I watched Phish from 9:30pm - 12:30am, but there was like almost a 40min intermission.... so, 2h20min of Phish, and it was quite good. I really enjoyed it. I didnt think id really see any of Phish during the weekend, i just wanted to see Bboys/NIN. Im not converted or anything, they were good, great musicians...but i wont be downloading their cds or anything.

I had to join this board . LOVE PHISH!!! I just saw the first 5 shows of the summer tour. I live in Vt. so I usually stay local to see the boys. But I haven't been to Ca in 20 years and I can't think of a better reason to head west than a Phishfest.

I've been to 4 of their huge end of summer festivals. Usually only 2 days. So this should be infukkincredible.

They play 3 sets per day.

around 2 pm til around 4pm (with an hour+ break)
around 6pm til 8 pm (another break)
around 9 pm til almost midnight!!!!!!

They don't fuck around because when they do their own festival , it all about PHISH!!! They never have any other bands, just them. And you get your $$$ worth. It's their way of saying thanx to the fans.

What is a Phish?

JimmyTwoTimes

Hey guys - just signed up here to give a little info on Phish. First off, I've been to every Coachella since its inception. I've also been to almost every Phish festival since their inception. Basically, I love music. :)

The rumors of Phish playing the Polo Grounds has pretty much been confirmed by lots of people that are "in" with their management, etc. On the website, www.phish.com, they're crossing off states every day to announce it, but everyone is 99% sure the last state will be California. A majority of hotels are almost sold out, and it hasn't even been announced yet. Welcome to the world of Phish.

As a fan of Coachella and Phish, this is a marriage made in heaven. A few things that have already been touched on - there is never an opening band - it's just Phish. Might sound strange, but when Phish played in Florida for '99-'00, 125,000 people showed up. I believe this is more than Coachella. Will it sell out? Depends on what the cap is, but if it's 80k, more than likely.

The crowd is great. It isn't all a bunch of hippies. It's people, just like you, that take their partying and music seriously. Think more of a Burning Man vibe than anything else. Communal, friendly, generous, and ready to rage. This will be the biggest party of the year.

As mentioned before, Phish covers an album for Halloween. My personal favorite is Loaded, because my favorite band playing one of my favorite albums was one of the greatest things I've ever witnessed. And I think they did it great justice. Remain In Light was incredible - played with Santana's percussionist and a full horn section. For a "stupid hippy band," covering entire albums by The Who, The Beatles, Talking Heads and The Velvet Underground is, I'd say pretty damn ambitious. Maybe they'll play Physical Graffiti? Thriller (God I hope not)? Who knows. Phish has also covered lots of songs over the years such as "Gold Soundz" by Pavement, "Roses Are Free" by Ween, "When the Circus Comes" by Los Lobos, "Rhinocerous" by Smashing Pumpkins, "Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter Group, "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC, "Peaches en Regalia" by Zappa, "Purple Rain" by Prince - you get the idea.

If you are unfamiliar with the music, I understand it isn't for everyone. Some people don't like "10 minute guitar solos." But what gets lost is the fact that the entire band listens to each other, playing off what the other member does, which constantly shifts and changes the jams into this organic, inspired ball of improvisation. At worst, it can meander and be boring (good time to take a leak). At best, it's complete and utter trancendence. When they're firing on all cylinders, there are those moments where your jaw is on the floor, your face is melted off, and you're looking at your friend laughing at the insanity and magic that's coming off that stage. There's a reason people like this band so much - they create music in the moment that's unlike anything out there...it's completely original.

If you haven't heard the band before, a great soundboard of a great show is available here:

http://musicalstewdaily.com/2008/11/28/phish-worcester-ma-11281997-11-years-ago-today-sbd/

Songs like "You Enjoy Myself" illustrate the compositional prowess of the band, with a great jam towards the end, "Maze" illustrates the shredding insanity of Trey, the guitarist, "Theme From the Bottom" shows big, rolling sound of the band, Phish's "funk" sound in "Black-Eyed Katy," but the coup de'gras of the show is the "Ghost" - one of the best examples of group improv you can get. You really get the sense of how dialed-in they are with each other, changing on a dime and locked into some other-worldly shit. If you like what you hear, there are tons of other shows for download for free on the Phish spreadsheet here:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p8WKkpP-TKpO1VnQgcff6EQ&gid=7

Just click the year on top. I suggest anything from August '93, Fall '94, and Fall '97.

Sorry for the ridiculously long post, but if you have the chance to get out here for this, it will be one of the most fun weekends of your life, I promise.

So for me to hop a plane, rent a car, (fuk-I'm gonna have to buy camping stuff) and then there's the (prob.) $200 ticket price.

But this fest is combining the 2 greatest Phish traditions. The huge Phish only multi-day concert AND the Halloween "musical costume".

Luckily as a Chef , the rest. is slow during this time of year, so getting the time off shouldn't be a prob.

Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Arcade Fire, Daft Punk to name a few that I would love to see that many times. Radiohead, NIN, Arcade Fire, Daft Punk 75 times each? Are you nuts?

I love all those bands and would love to see them multiple times...like 10 times each. Number 25 would be pretty boring, with those almost identical set lists and all. Number 39 would start to drag and I'd wonder what else I could be doing. Number 62 would be downright shitty. Number 75 and I think you get my point. They're just not bands to go on tour with, they're bands to see when they come through your part of town and then maybe +1 or 2. I wouldn't even want to see Daft Punk's last tour more than two or three times because the sets were IDENTICAL except for the encore.

I'm not one to see Phish 100 times nor would I count how many times I've seen ANY band but jambands do something other bands don't - they switch up the set list and rid themselves of the monotony. Like em or hate em, they're geared to be different and they're geared for tour rats, hence the insane following of a band like The Dead. I'm pretty sure the dead never played the same set list twice.

I think Supre is hinting at the fact that Delta financed his Arcade Fire followin' at least in part by buying up and scalping Arcade Fire tickets and merchandise from show to show. Something Arcade Fire themselves wouldn't be too impressed with, and something that definitely didn't impress his Arcade Fire lovin' comrades.

I've def. seen them on an "Off" night. Not EVERY song at every show is perfect. But on the whole-- it wasn't a "bad" show in my eyes. I've had a blast each & every time. I'm a huge fan, but I actually HATE a few of their songs. When ever they play "Ice" I head for the beer stand. they start "bug"...I head for the pisser.

I saw the Jones beach run, and the shows were average. Average to me probably because I've been seeing them since'89. My buddy LOVED them all. They were his first shows. So, to me, in my eyes.....nope , not a single bad one.

I think the Camden show was hot, but probly the best one was the final night at Alpine.

Don't forget , I live in Vermont. The first time I saw them they played at a mini golf / driving range/ field. It cost $5 to get in. And since I missed the first (of 3) set, and the girl working the gate thought I was cute, I got in for free. There were mabey 300 ppl there. They played the same place the following year and there were about2000!!! I was working in radio at the time and also got in for free.

Sorry, if this is posted, but I haven't seen it. MTV is jumping on the Coachella bandwagon now...

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1615006/20090630/phish.jhtml

Phish are back on the road and have a new studio album, Joy, coming out at the end of July. According to their official Web site, they're also bringing back a classic Phish tradition: They'll be hosting their own three-day festival October 30 through November 1.

Back in March, when the band was first hitting the road, there was a rumor that they would be hosting their own festival somewhere in Texas, though the current rumor is that the event will be taking place at the same site that hosts the Coachella Festival in Indio, California. However, no official venue has been confirmed as of yet. The announcement page also has a map that features animated fire ants eating states out of a map of the U.S., suggesting that the last state standing will be hosting the big show (so far, Idaho, West Virginia, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Washington, Wisconsin and New Hampshire are all off the board).

Phish have a long history of planning these types of events. Their first was the two-day Clifford Ball in 1996, which drew over 70,000 people to a decommissioned Air Force base in Plattsburgh, New York. Subsequent festivals moved around to various parts of the Northeast, always had different names (Lemonwheel, the Great Went) and expanded to feature large-scale art projects. They were always well-attended in fact, when the Great Went drew 65,000 people to Limestone, Maine, it became the most populated city in the state. The last multi-day festival was 2004's Coventry, a rain-soaked two-day affair in Vermont in August of that year.

The band which broke up in 2004 but have been back together since late last year are in the middle of a wildly successful return tour, which began in Hampton, Virginia in March and has made landmark stops at Boston's Fenway Park and the Bonnaroo Festival, where they jammed with Bruce Springsteen. Their new album Joy will be released July 28.

There are a few bands I've seen multiple times, but I've seen Phish like 92/93 times since 1992.

Here's the deal. Phish improvises. They get up on stage, have their regularly structured songs which are essentially launching pads for improvisation. When they start their show, they don't know what they're going to play songwise, and definitely don't know what they're going to play jamwise. It's completely inspired music depending on the vibe of the crowd, their surroundings, etc. - whatever is influencing them at that time in the moment. What bands do that? What bands have the cajones to get up in front of 70k people and improvise? I'll tell you - none. I mean, there's something to be said for bands getting up and playing their rehearsed songs and rehearsed setlists over and over every night - that's what the majority probably wants to hear. But that's what makes Phish special - it's music/art that's created in the moment. And like I said before, sometimes it can be meandering and boring - of course it will be. But when everything comes together, there's no better feeling on the planet.

This "reunion" tour has been, in my personal opinion, lacking compared to tours in the past. But I'm a bit jaded and to virgin ears, it's still good. I think they'll find their footing soon.. the last couple shows of the first leg of this tour were definitely way more improved than the beginning. Definitely download that show I posted the link to on the last page and listen to that "Ghost" to see what they're capable of. And remember - during the jam - they're MAKING THAT UP AS THEY GO ALONG. Just magic.

While I realize nobody knows what album they will cover in it's entirity, if at all... I was thinking... it HAS to be Thriller. I mean considering MJ's passing + it's Haloween and all.

But like I said anybody's guess is as good as mine. But Thriller would just be EPHIC! I also think Ziggy Stardust could be nasTy.

Nice post. And from a true fan.

My only disagreement is that they don't know what they are gonna play. They def. do have a list before hand. Seen Bittersweet Motel?? Trey admits to the fact that when the show is over he goes back to the hotel room to work on the next night's list. I'm sure it's pretty much an outline that may or may not be adjusted mid-set. The improvisation comes during the songs. You know.......where to launch the funk, how long does it go, will they melty-groove right into the next song or start cold.

One thing is sure , they are the best at what they do and no one comes close.:thu

Here's a post from another message board, so take it for what it's worth. Maybe some credence to other bands playing with Phish in Indio. For those that don't know, Les Claypool (Primus) and Stewart Copeland (The Police) formed a power trio with Trey Anastasio (guitarist for Phish) called Oysterhead, put out one album and did one tour about 6-7 years ago. Oh and the Mike he's referring to is Mike Gordon, the bass player for Phish.

"So I ran into Les at a downtown restaraunt today and chatted with him for a second. First off really nice guy! we talked a bit about Primus and his other bands. He was very outgoing and eager to talk. I could barely get a word in after a bit.

Anyway the conversation moved towards Oysterhead. I told him I saw them before and thought it was a great trio yada yada. He brings up that him and "the fancy band" are possibly playing the phish fest along with a few other bands. He didn't know the other bands at all yet but, said that Mike wanted to play an afternoon set with the band he just toured with for green sparrow! He said that b/c he went into the fact that it would be great if trey wanted to do an oysterhead set b/c copeland doesn't have anything scheduled and lives in LA.He said that they are putting the final touches on their contract with the phish festival."

PhishCake - we're both kind of right. They wrote setlists out up until around '99-'00 (re: some article I'll have to dig up). The 2003 and 2004 tours were all made-up on the spot. People thought this made them a little sloppier, though. I know they went back and wrote the setlists out for Hampton (first reunion shows back) and there are setlists written out for the current tour, but they haven't been sticking to them (someone grabbed a setlist they wrote out from backstage and posted a picture of it, but they only played about 1/4 of the songs when comparing it to what they actually played that night).

I don't really care about that, though. They will always play a few huge monster jam vehicles, a few quirky songs (bluegrass, etc), a few super-heavy funk jams and throw a cover or two in. It's all about the improv!

higgybaby23
07-01-2009, 01:40 PM
Trey used to be obsessive about setlists and the evolution of Phish's musical themes. I heard that he used to dissect each nights show, looking for ways to improve or grow the material. It became a hinderance, so they intentionally stopped doing it. You can see Trey's controlling behaviour in full form in the film Bittersweet Motel. In fact, I believe it became a band rule that none of them could say anything judgemental about the music off the stage.

Phish announces the return of Halloween festival

Submitted by strummerisgod1209 on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 15:33.
By Ross Moody

As if they weren't going to be appearing at copious festivals during their latest reunion, Phish has announced that they will be hosting a festival on Halloween weekend.

The band revealed their plans with a simple message on their website's entrance page: "Save The Date 10/30 10/31 11/01". The band did not indicate the location of the festival, though the Empire Polo Field in Indio, California (of Coachella and Stagecoach fame) and the 700-acre Bonaroo site in Manchester, Tennessee have both been mentioned as possibles.

The festival will possibly serve as a cap to Phish's live shows for 2009, with the first live appearances being a three-night run in Hampton, Virginia, and a subsequent tour, which included a stop headlining Bonnaroo.

Phish has a history of hosting festivals, with the first, entitled "The Clifford Ball," running on August 16 and 17 in Plattsburgh, New York. Artists ranging stylistically from Latin-rockers Ozomatli to bluegrass legend Del McCoury have appeared. The new, Halloween festival will be the eighth festival that the band has hosted.

For updates on the new festival situation, check back with Festival Preview soon.

Hotel bookings up following Phish rumor

Monica Torline, Bruce Fessier and Xochitl Pena • The Desert Sun • July 2, 2009

Hotels in Indio are reporting today that they are sold out for Halloween weekend following rumors that folk band Phish is planning a three-day music festival at one of the city’s polo club
“The customers were the ones who told me they were coming,” said Heather Guthrie, regional manager for the Indio Travelodge.

The 52-room hotel is nearly sold out Oct. 29 through Nov. 2, she said.

“I’ve never heard of them,” Guthrie said. “I love them now because they sold my hotel out!”

Bookings for the end of October started picking up about two weeks ago at the Best Western Date Tree Hotel in Indio, general manager Aaron Segal said.

“It’s not official yet in terms of 100 percent, but what I’ve heard is the only sticking point is making sure the city of Indio is signed on,” he said. “I don’t know why they wouldn’t be.”

Jim Curtis, Human Services Supervisor for Special Events in Indio said Phish fans have been calling his office for information about the rumored concert.

“I heard about it too, but nothing is confirmed. I haven’t seen any contract or agreement,” he said.

As with the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Stagecoach Country Music Festival, the concert organizer would have to request a special events permit from the city and enter into an agreement.

Curtis said they’ve been referring all calls about the concert to Empire Polo Club where the two other music festivals are held.

Much-needed tax dollars are brought to the valley every spring with those two concerts.

Fans for those festivals crowd into hotels and restaurants in Indio and nearby cities on back-to-back weekends.

Unlike the April festivals, which feature dozens of bands, this concert revive Phish’s annual three-day solo festival over the Halloween.

“It’s just Phish, and it’s like a community of people,” Segal said. “They’re just die-hards, like the Grateful Dead.”

Summer Parkinson, the senior sales manager at Empire Polo Club, said no official contact has been made with that facility regarding a three-day concert in October.

“It’s just an unconfirmed rumor at this point,” she said, declining to comment further.

Calls to neighboring Eldorado Polo Club were not immediately returned Thursday.

Paul Tollett, the promoter of the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals, was expected to meet with Phish’s production manager on Thursday.

The jam band’s Web site says they’re planning a festival called “Save the Date” at either the the Bonnaroo or Coachella festival sites. Phish recently played at Bonnaroo in Tennessee.

“It should be a phenomenal three days for the whole valley,” Segal said of the possibility that Phish would play in Indio at the start of the next high season. “Phish would be a great way to start it off.”

If Phish tickets for three days are $200, they attract 60-100K people, and Phish is the only talent at the Polo fields, does that mean they make a Bazillionkagallion dollars off this?

Even if they donate a ‘portion’ to the date farmers, that’s almost the amount of cash that Coachella has to book a hundred and fifty acts, construct 5 stages, and put up all the art.

More like 13k regarding campers for Coachella. They can expand it a bit, and also they can add an RV lot since at Stagecoach they do that, so maybe 25 - 30k worth of people can camp possibly?

I think the community can handle it, they have dealt with Coachella for 10 years, and the last 3 years its been 2 festivals in a week.

R U serious?? I gotta head off to work so I don't have the time but go back and read any post by Jimmy2times. He can sum it up. Alot of people like to compare Phish to the Grateful Dead. Musically they are not at all alike. Other than the fact that they play/tour endlessly, usually 2 sets plus encore. And their style is of a jamming/improvisational nature. Also the fan base is similar. We like to see them often because every show is different.

On a personal note. I shower daily. Have a job and own my own home. I won't be bringing my baby or dog on tour. And I eat meat.

Well, it's a whole new era (Phish 3.0 as the fans call it). Completely new management team (Red Light, who has Radiohead, Bat For Lashes, DMB, Gomez, The Decemberists, etc). In the past, like I stated before, they've never had any opening bands/extra acts. They've had lots of special guests join them for jams on stage, but please tell me.. what band has attracted 125k people in the middle of nowhere.. ALONE? And with no radio play, no real promotion by anyone... there's a reason for this.

BUT.. it is a whole new managament team, so anything is possible.

Still no real steps toward confirmation though.

I would say the post before yours may be an indication of the opposite?

Whoa there's something new on www.phish.com today...instead of ants cancelling out states, there's this Futurama-like octopus head lady Vanna White character who turns over states like they're tiles on Wheel of Fortune. Still no real steps toward confirmation though.

Thats been there for a few days, you are slow as hell. Each time they take out states, its in a different fashion, so yeah, CHECK EVERY DAY. And they originally had a ship pull out states form their spots, and then the ants, and so on and so forth.

I have no life and even I had better things to do than see if Phish art changes every day or not.

I love the new one with Zeus blowing away 3 states.

And one of them was TENN!
