Yeah Yeah Yeahs at BFD = Heartbreak... Alas, I will have to go.

Yeah, I hear ya...luckily there are a few others in the mix as well; Metric, Crystal Castles, Does It Offend You Yeah?, Glasvegas, Steve Aoki and Mike Relm.

I have only seen the YYYs in festival settings; BFD 2004, Download Festival 2006 and soon to be Sasquatch 2009. One of my friend's went to their Fillmore show from awhile back and said it was awesome, sigh...I think that I was at sea or something for that one.

They were Main in 2004, which (I think) was the last year that BFD still utilized the Amphitheater's stage.

crazy tour schedule for the YYYs. Coachella -> Europe through end of May -> select U.S. festivals in June -> back to Europe through at least end of August. I really hope for more U.S. dates in the fall. But for now I'll settle for BFD.

Word on the street is that they are supposed to do what they did last year by having it all on the Parking Lot and not use the Main Stage at all. I'm happy about that.

I think I already promised some friends that I'd be going, so I'm glad there are a few good acts. :) Why does it feel like half of the lineup is a repeat from last year? Maybe I'm thinking of some other one day fest thing.

$25 + fees. Probably end up being a $40 ticket. Unless you go to Shoreline when tix go on sale, where they will hand out the first 1000 tix for $20 straight up.

Interesting, they are changing the layout and putting the big bands on the proper stage. This has the potential to work out really well for me or be completely horrible depending on how they schedule it.

I think they will do it like they used to and only one of the side stages might run into the main stage times by a little bit, but it wouldnt matter at the time. And are they going to sell reserved seating for this thing? Or all GA?

Geno_g
04-22-2009, 10:25 AM
Yeah it looks like last years, I only saw MGMT and the electronic tent too, if I go I will electronic tent, metric, and cage the elephant

I would see the YYYs for the third time too, I saw offspring a long time ago and 311, what headliners...

BlackSwan
04-22-2009, 10:45 AM
I have a feeling it will be all GA, which means I'll have to get there early to get a spot in the amphitheatre. I'm only going to see Yeah Yeah Yeahs and will probably hang out to see 311 and The Offspring for nostalgia.

When I was there in 2004 they waited until later in the day to start up the Main Amphitheater Stage. I don't remember if all the other stages were finished by then or not. Basically the reserved seating will only come into effect for the 3 headliners (The Offspring, 311 and Yeah Yeah Yeahs).

EDIT: sorry for redundant info, didn't refresh page

Looks like reserved seating for $50. I wonder how that will work, considering some seats are much better than others. I wouldn't care all that much, but Yeah Yeah Yeahs I'd like to be close for so I might consider reserved seating for twice as much money. Or I could just wait till they tour properly.

I saw 311 in 2005 in Santa Cruz and they actually put on a good show, in case anyone was wondering.

I'll probably go to this but if I have to choose between this and NIN/JA I'm definitely going to the latter.

Big F*cking Day

I saw 311 in 2005 in Santa Cruz and they actually put on a good show, in case anyone was wondering.

I also saw 311 in 2005, Blackalicious opened for them at the SF Fillmore the night before I headed to Vegas for the inaugural Vegoose. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed their set. I actually enjoyed it more so than when I saw them in '96 in the AZ.

Aww, the Fillmore would be a great venue to see them in. I used to be really into 311 in the time between when Music and Soundsystem came out. Seen them at Jones Beach, HOB Atlantic City and SF Design Center. It's a shame they have been reduced to playing a Live 105 show, I fear it will be nothing like a real 311 show.

4th row in the pre-sale, bitches.

what? isn't this thing taking place in the parking lot like last year? or when they say "main stage" they mean the headliners will actually be playing on the shoreline amphitheater stage? this would make it much more worth it to me. the set-up last year, while efficient, kinda sucked for the bigger acts.

BlackSwan
04-23-2009, 10:49 AM
It is taking place in the parking lot, but YYYs, 311 and The Offsping will be in the amphitheatre.

chiapet
04-23-2009, 10:57 AM
They seem to go back and forth between those types of setups. Yes, reserved seating sales mean that the entire show is not just GA, there will be assigned seating and lawn seating for the portion of the acts who are in the amphitheatre. Not just the headliners - probably approx 1/3-1/2 the acts as they've done in the past (alternating stages).

I actually liked the way they did it last year :)

oh im going with a friend, buying the 25 dollar ticket

went last year and had a pretty good time, saw pennywise and cypress hill during the day and got to dance to moby to end the night- not bad at all. like the lineup better this year so this is a no brainer imo.

chiapet
04-23-2009, 11:28 AM
I ended up buying reserved seating because I'd like to be somewhat close for YYYs. I am in C which I think is about 10 rows back, in the center section. Unfortunately I think any of my friends that are going will be getting lawn tickets.

BlackSwan
04-23-2009, 11:34 AM
WTF? How did you get better tickets than me? Did you order them right at 10am? I am in one of the side sections. I retried for center a couple times, but 200 section tickets started coming up.

chiapet
04-23-2009, 11:36 AM
Nope, I just ordered about 30 min ago. The first one that came up for me was even closer, but section 101. I am in the middle of a row though so it may be that it's a single seat. (My friends are on the fence and I decided not to wait).

aphrael
04-23-2009, 03:58 PM
The Shoreline isn't a very good venue, especially for lawn seats; it wasn't great when it was built and it's aging badly.

That said, $25 to see: glasvegas, zion I, DJ-AM, steve aoki, and the offspring ... seems like a no-brainer.

BS, I have a few times and think they're find in the lower tier. When you get further up the sound can be off, but it's not been consistent for me, so it could be sloppy tech or something.

I don't have the money to pay twice as much just to see Yeah Yeah Yeahs up close, although I would want to normally. General Admission for me.

ok, so i just did a vanity search on google, something i try to avoid most of the time.

however i keep seeing things saying we have split up?!

i would just like to clear this up. no, we have not split up, we are in the studio working on album 2. all the same people that did album 1. yes we have had to pull out of a few gigs, but this has all to do with making sure that the 2nd album rocks 20 times more then the 1st. nothing to do with splitting.

Ah ok. Well, it looks like we got the main stage times 3 days in advance "unofficially" then. (BFD was June 7th last year). And no advance on the other stages. Blah. Who's going to go down when the doors open and post the set times for us? :)

Three days in advance isn't really any worse than when the Coachella set times are announced ... and that bugs me more because there are more choices to make and because I like to have the time to make my own little schedule printouts. :) For BFD, I'm thinking that's pretty much unnecessary.

I'll be there with the friend who went to Coachella with me last year. :) I'm taking the train down, though, so I'm still trying to figure out how to get home.

I agree, sort of. None of them should be headlining. In the past I would have said YYY's should headlining, but after their mellowed out Coachella set, I'm not sure they are headline quality either. Kings of Leon or Weezer would have been much better. KROQ got them, why not.

fikus222

When I saw the YYYs at BFD '04 they were either the first of four or second of four bands to play the main stage. The other bands were the Killers, the Violent Femmes and the Beastie Boys.

Here is a crappy pic of the YYYs that day:

The Offspring are bigger than 311 here in the Bay Area. They are also bigger than Kings of Leon. If Weezer were playing I would've paid for a reserved seat and maybe a jerkoff booth.

So I went down to lovely Shoreline this morning to grab my BFD ticket, I love sundays, no fees at shoreline, so I paid $25 bucks to see the YYYs, Crystal Castles, Metric, Mutemath, Mike relm, and Cage the elephant.

I'm rolling solo, so I'm gonna take pictures and I'll wear feather's candee to the show since there's a subsonic dance tent, last year I was in there for most of the day...

It's funny cuz I was slightly worried about last year's main stage line up bringing undesirables into the dance tent once there wasn't any other main stage acts to be had. I was totally proven wrong, plus I didn't even see any fights break out during the daytime either.

I believe they said no cameras last year too. I think this first one is actually Mute Math.

I'm sure there was not much of a line at noon (when I planned on going), but there was a work crisis that resulted in me not being able to leave SF until like 1:15, hit some slow moving traffic on the way down due to some accidents and a lot of highway patrol out, then long wait for parking, and a huge wait in the security line. I could hear Glasvegas while at the back of the line -- I could actually hear Geraldine pretty clearly.

I ended up getting inside during the end of Mute Math, had just enough time to grab a drink before Metric. Then saw Zion I, Mike Relm, Dead Confederate, YYYs, and then had to split due to more work drama.

Kinda pissed about the work situation as for once I was actually ready to leave the house at like 11. I literally had my keys in my hand when I got paged. :(

311 put on a good show too, they had all of the members play drums for this drum session it sounded bad ass, plus they played a lot of there older stuff...

Yea, that's what my friends said. I felt bad that I had to ditch everyone (even though I wasn't that excited for anything after YYYs), but I kept getting work calls and could not find any place quiet to go to talk to customers. Sucks... so glad to be on vacation in a few days.

What'd you think of your seats, BS? I remember when you first bought them you weren't sure the sound & view would be good. Looks like the view was no problem.

I was pretty close, like ~10 row back in the center, BUT.... I fucking fail, I forgot to bring my camera.

The view was awesome, but the sound was terrible. We were near the speakers on the right so everything sounded like it was amplified into a muddy mess. When 311 came on it was so loud that my right eardrum was vibrating. This was the the first time I left during a performance to get ear plugs. After that it was ok. Overall, we had a great time. Left right around the time when the lead singer from The Offspring started playing piano... They are pretty terrible.

This was the first time i've ever used earplugs; after Audrye Sessions and DJ Omar, I knew I wasn't gonna be able to hear anything by the end of the day if I didn't.

Chiapet, that work situation sounds obnoxious. I'm sorry to hear it. :(

good times yesterday, but Shoreline needs to get their sh*t together. I too waited nearly an hour to get into the venue. Could sorta hear Glasvegas, but not really. Saw all of Metric, then wandered a bit, seeing a little of Dizzy Balloon and getting some beers. Then went up on the T-Mobile Tower and watched a little of Rebelution and all of Alkaline Trio, who put on a solid show. At one point there were 3 mini-pits going on below. Then wandered a bit more, waited 15 min for a hot dog that wasn't there. So I asked for polish sausage. Sold out of those too. OK, andoullie then... NOPE all gone. WTF!?!!? Settled for a hot link, but geezus the specialty hot dog stand can't even keep dogs ready? (for the record, same thing happened last year and both times were before 6pm) As a consolation, as I waited for a hot link and finished my previous beer, the lady who walked me through the ordeal of repeatedly telling me NO, asked what I was drinking, took my empty old cup and filled it with Lagunitas IPA (SCORE! $12 right there). Finally, YYY's came on. On time, as scheduled and rocked a great set. Stuck around for 311, then went to check out Crystal Castles and see what the hype is about. Well, they blew it. Supposed to start at 9:25pm, I think they took the stage at 9:50pm. I was having flashbacks to the Air fiasco at Coachella (2007?). If your band is going to rely heavily on some anal f*ck punching keyboards with his index finger and needs everything to be perfect, then hire a crew that can set your sh*t up correctly and quickly! I think the guy came out and was messin' with the keyboards 6 different times until they got it right. Maybe it wasn't the band, but whatever, it still leaves a bad taste in the mouth of the audience. Listened to 3 songs and split. Thank you YYY's for bringing the awesomeness!

Sound on the main stage blew ass (we were up on the grass, center near the seated rail). I was hearing dead confederates (for the first time) and thinking they were MEH, good for background music. Then YYY came on and sounded horrible compared to Coachella. Maybe Dead Confeds were pretty good after all...

Also this was my first time at shoreline, the grass area is horrid if you want to see anything. They need to incline it more like at the Greek...

Or walk up and get more incline, the top area you can see the stage, if your short you can't see if you are close to the rail on the lawn...

Hey, it was good for those of us on the lawn. After Yeah Yeah Yeahs being quiet (and NIN/JA for that matter) it was a relief to actually have the volume at a comfortable level for the headliners.

I am forever pissed off at Crystal Castles, who just don't deserve their popularity. They're not important enough to predictably skip out on their interview/autograph session and play 40 minute shows and come on 25 minutes late or whatever. I actually didn't know when they came on until now, I gave up and went to watch the Offspring, who were plenty of fun. They gave me the 90s flashback I don't really need from Blink 182, and their music is far better. I thought Dexter was hilarious when he started playing piano, and he didn't do so badly on the ballad.

311 were great, their drummer has a huge drum kit. Probably not as big as Danny Carey's, but I'd love to see a comparison. 311 for Coachella! Mute Math, Limousines too. Odawas. Amp Live with the synthesizer was madness.

shakur: aye, I saw you in front of the festival stage during cage the elephant, i think. or maybe audrye sessions. don't remember which. i was a few rows behind you. :) (i had on a blue sleeveless shirt and a kinda-matching blue beanie, for most of the day, which looked really silly when my arms turned red around 5pm).

i was kinda conflicted about crystal castles vs. offspring, but upon hearing what went down at the crystal castles set, i'm kinda glad i went to the offspring. :)

I actually didn't mind it. It's very similar to every other outdoor amphitheatre I've been to. I think is really just comes down to having seats in the 100's sections. I'm sure the farther back you are, the more it sucks. Although smoking would have been a lot easier if I didn't have 5 security guards looking at me.

I saw him & damien at the bill graham a few yrs ago...he was 1:15 minutes late, we were on the rail, the place was soooo hot box'd I thought for sure the fire marshal was gonna shut it down, he had local guest rappers (too short, lyric born and a few others I wasn't familiar with) and literaly smoked a whole pack a blunts during his 45min set. His band was jamming & funky!!! Tell Nips I'll even through in a titty twister!!! :)
