Who do you think will be there this year?

My guess is U2, The Cure or Springsteen. One of them has gotta be there this year.

The Cure = new record they haven't promoted since it's been released.

U2 has a new record coming out.

So does The Boss.

Does anyone know if they are having it this year?

It's currently undecided as to who is going to put it on, but the city is definitely all for it's return. It was the most profitable of all of the trillions of new festivals last year so that's got to count for something. Whether it was the most successful or well-run, well, I can't say. But I'd say it's about 90% likely to return. Still a chance it won't, but pretty unlikely.

I guess there's going to be a little bidding war between all the promoters? I don't know if I should call it that because not everyone will want it. But, much like In Rainbows or Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, it is currently without a label.

Yuck. More or less dust than Coachella? Well, I guess it would help that there's no on-site camping.

If I can find someone willing to split the cost of a cheap hotel, I am totally doing that next year. I know camp and trainchella are fun and all but my allergies can't take it.

ANYWAY, logistical nightmare or not, Golden Gate Park is a good place to have a festival. I think a smaller one would be really nice.

pancakespancakes
12-22-2008, 03:01 PM
There was no dirt at all. I don't really know what Nationocean was talking about. It was all grass, similar to Coachella, albeit not mowed to perfection like a polo field is, and that's about it. And of course there was no dust because of the immense humidity. Dust comes as a result of dry weather. San Francisco is everything but dry.

I think he's talking about the area that you walked through to get between the larger stages. It was very dusty. It's been dry here for the last couple of years, and there was no grass in that area, so there was a lot of dust in the air. This part of the city used to be sand dunes, there is definitely dust. ;)

BrettShipes
12-22-2008, 11:32 PM
Well the entire area around the main field that wasn't grass was nothing but dirt. And there was plenty of dust, at least enough for me to think "I should bring a bandana".

As far as rumors, there was LOTS of reggae, so it wouldn't surprise me to see a Marley on the lineup. And what the hey, throw Matisyahu in there. And lets hope they're ganna make it so you can actually see/hear the Sutro stage (Beck/Cake) if you're not up close to it or a VIP. That would rock because it doesn't matter who's playing if half the crowd can't hear it. Better yet, make that entire area setup Sahara style and book some electronic/dance acts, there are plenty of us Bay Area folk who would enjoy that. Glitch Mob is local ;)

looks like Another Planet Entertainment won the bid and have been given a three year contract to repeat the event....

From the SF Chronicle on 1/30/09....

"The promoter who filled Golden Gate Park with music fans last year for a three-day festival has been given a three-year contract to repeat the event - a deal that could bring the city's parks department up to $1.7 million a year in extra cash.

Another Planet Entertainment, a Bay Area-based promoter, was unanimously picked over two other groups by a six-person committee that included city officials as well as a representative from a group dedicated to preserving open space in the world-famous park. A lease agreement will be negotiated in the next few weeks.

The concert lineup has not yet been finalized, according to the promoter.

The August event will bring badly needed revenue to the Recreation and Park Department, which lost 17 employees to midyear cuts and, like all city agencies, is being asked to shave at least 12 percent off next year's budget, a total of $8 million.

City officials said they plan to work with community members, elected officials and city agencies to prevent last year's hiccups - a dearth of transit and parking, and too much traffic. The city is aiming to learn from last year's mistakes, and in addition to promising more outreach, officials acquiesced to several neighborhood demands, such as ending the Sunday show by 7:30 p.m.

Raymond Holland of the Planning Association for the Richmond, who will meet with city officials today, acknowledged that some neighbors are opposed to the concert regardless of any concessions, but said his group understands that the department needs money. In addition to staffing shortfalls, the parks department needs to make an $1.7 billion in repairs at parks and recreation facilities.

"Last year's experience with Another Planet Entertainment was good. It went well compared to other concerts they have that don't produce money for the city," he said. "We are going to insist they do a better job of coordinating city departments - if there was a shortcoming last year, it was that. ... and there has got to be outreach and announcements."

Holland also said he was happy that the city is starting the planning process so early. Supervisor Carmen Chu, who represents the Sunset District, also seemed optimistic, but said the promoters and department need to make sure they do adequate outreach. She noted that last year, access was restricted to a large portion of the park not just during the concert, but for days before and after the event, limiting people's ability to use the public space and shutting down popular commuter routes.

Last year's concert, headlined by Radiohead, brought 130,000 people to the park. It brought in $815,000 under an agreement that allowed the city to collect a base rent plus a portion of revenues. This year, Another Planet has promised a minimum of $950,000, plus $1 from every ticket sold, said parks spokeswoman Lisa Seitz Gruwell. They also are responsible for reimbursing the city for its expenses, such as extra police and parking control officers.

If the attendance stays the same, she said, the department will receive a little more than $1.2 million; if it reaches the 180,000 capacity, the agency will get $1.7 million.

Seitz Gruwell said it's a good deal, noting that Chicago made $1.5 million from last year's Lollapalooza concert in Grant Park, which was attended by 225,000 people."

They play once a year here every single September, an annual tradition of sorts, and somehow I've just never seen them. I'm a pretty casual fan though. And that time of year is prime time for concerts, I'm just never as interested in seeing them as I am the hundreds of other bands that come here in August and September, so I skip it.

Boourns, I'm not sure how much they can change the setup, obviously their permit doesn't allow them to change anything of the natural environment. There are other large areas in the park but none that are large enough to accommodate this number of stages.

If they switch the orientation of the main stage, for example, they'd lose area for the beer garden and vendors. Then people would bitch about long lines for food + alcohol. The setup was fine, the only real bottleneck I know of was for beck -> radiohead, which maybe was just poor scheduling on their part. Would have made more sense to put them on the same stage and keep the majority of the crowd in one place.

Zero question on DMB. I am wondering if they will go with the biggest headliner again on Friday

No they won't. I mean, it's possible, but the only reason they did that was because of Radiohead's touring schedule. They were originally just planning on doing the festival two days, Saturday and Sunday, but when they realized Radiohead were in town at the same time, they extended the thing to Friday to accomodate them.

not sure about Kings of Leon seeing that they are playing the Bill Graham Civic on 5/21 here in SF. Then again, they will be back in CA late August with an LA date on 8/22, so it is possible.

Get your fresh dates! Step right up. From the four corners of globe, we've spared zilch to bring you the most jaw-dropping three full days of fun Golden Gate Park has ever seen. Men, hold your hats. Ladies, hold your beards because this is San Francisco and we can't even believe the spectacle. More music with a longer Friday, more local restaurants, more wine, more eco-initiatives, and more freaks! Mark your calendar for the 2nd Annual Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival coming from a town near you August 28-30th, 2009. If we don't have it, you don't want it.

This was in an email from OSL along with the new dates. I noticed it was not on the website.

pancakespancakes
03-03-2009, 03:19 PM
Yeah, I suspect the same, but they won't be coming to California. I don't see them coming here until July at the very least. Maybe August or September.

The more I think about it, it would be great if they played OSL on Friday... and I got to see them down here in San Diego on the Tuesday or Wednesday prior. I actually think that's possible. BSS did the same thing last year, except they played Sunday, and their show down here was on Friday, so I couldn't go.

OSL is definitely going to be less sensitive about "blackout dates" then Coachella, though. So the YYYs would still be welcomed.

eh, it's SF, you should play on walking a very long way, waiting for a long time for a bus, or getting some parking tickets. That being said, I had no problem getting a bus last year -- just walk west leaving the park instead of east (or directly north or south), and go a few more blocks away from the park. A print out of the Muni map would serve you well. Most people were out of towners (or at least bay area non-SF people) and have no idea what there is other than the 5 or the N.

Yup, that's what I learned the second night as well. The first night was a nightmare, though, we got out of the park at 10 or 11, whatever it was... and then I think we finally end up getting on a bus at 12:30... ended up at the hotel in Oakland by 1:30 AM.

But, as both my mom and I decided, we could really do a hell of a lot worse. All we do when we vacation up in San Fran is walk around the glorious neighborhoods anyway... so, despite the late hour, it was still quite the pleasurable city to get stuck in. Everything's just so nice there.

Yea, it's always fun to just walk around. I wish we had more late night restaurants -- it would make it a lot more pleasant to "get stuck" after the festival if there were places open -- most stuff closes at 11 or 12 even on the weekend, very few later than that.

Jman4321

Besides Radiohead and a few choice other big guns (i.e. Wilco and Broken Social Scene among others) the line-up only stayed merely pleasant for me. I hope they have the clout to get it stacked this year.

Agreed bmwmunk. I'm not really sure where scoop49er got that. And I was standing front row for Ben Harper, mind you, haha... ground zero for frat boys! I might have felt that a bit at Primus though, but it's a little different. Primus fans are just a bit on the creepier side as a whole...

The vibe I got at OSL, in terms of crowd, was Coachella in the mountains. It was very hipster-friendly, just as Coachella is, but instead of headbands and neon glasses and that stuff, it was parkas and mittens and beanies and lovely foggy weather.

Come to think of it, between Coachella, Bonnaroo, Vegoose, and Outside Lands, this festival probably had my favorite kind of crowd that I've attended with. It was very mellow, but not too silly, either. Just nice.

I loved Outside Lands. Great Lineup, great weather, great city...

My only complain would be the schedule. Lots of great bands played at the same time. I remember Manu Chao/Black Keys/Beck at the same time.

ok maybe im using the wrong terms.. it just felt more like a city party which i was fine with... i know some regualr festival concert goers didnt like the vibe but i think thats because its a city festival, not a destination festival...

me and my brother went and had a good time. shared many bowls with alot of people.

the only difference i saw was alot of people were in groups just talking and not watching the music, more than normal.. so it seemed like they were there just to be there.. but that was me people watching.. there were no assholes there and it was a peaceful party vibe so i am for sure going this year! :)

chiapet

oh, maybe i just read too much into it. to me, 'frat boy vibe' is people being assholes. ;) it's true a lot of people were just sitting around talking.... a lot of us went with groups of friends and sat around hanging out when there were bands we weren't that interested in, who were playing. no matter how they sell it, i don't think it's a destination festival. it's really good for people in the bay area and possibly a handful who travel in to see one or more headliners *shrug*.

i think they will package it like last year.. have friday as its own day with specific acts that people would want to come out for at least 1 day, and then try to package sat and sun with the same type of acts so people will want to go for a sat and sun knowing sun will end at 730pm....

Gogol Bordello would be a great act for the festival. When they played at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival last year I've never seen such a HUGE & ANIMATED Audience. Imagine the same sea of people at Beck's set during Outside Lands last year, but with no fencing so the crowds were packed all the way up into the wood and everyone was dancing, clapping, and having a grand ol' time. Actually, I hate to say it, but scoop has actually posted the three headliners. He hasn't posted the, all at the same time in any of his posts, but of all the headliners he has posted, three of them are the actual headliners.

DMB makes the festival better. The relaxed Jack Johnson and Tom Petty days were ridiculously more entertaining that the aggro crowded Radiohead day last year.

Undercard? Pretty sure we'll get a lot of the festival hoppers. Booker T + Drive By Truckers looks likely.

Totally agree. I don't care for Tom Petty or JJ at all, but I totally preferred the kinds of people they brought in. The Radiohead crowd was a little bit too agressive. Met some really nice people all three days last year though...

I've been told it's only one of the three above, but honestly I am kind of surprised by it. I thought it was going to be those and I would prefer them so I am still hopeful that the person I talked to was wrong.
Hmmm...I'll be disappointed if it's The Dead, DMB, and Incubus...

It was about $250 for all three days including all service charges. It was an amazing festival, far superior to Coachella.

Superior to Coachella? Outside Lands was a fucking shit fest compared to Coachella, by far the worst festival experience I have ever had. I wouldn't recommend going to that fest to anybody.

Saturday/Sunday were more relaxing than any day I've spent at Coachella. The food was infinitely better due to it being prepared and sold by local restaurants.
The setting and weather (though it's SF in the summer, so weather isn't set in stone) were great and comfortable.
Public transportation worked out perfectly once you were able to figure out how to bypass the clusterfuckiness.
99% of people who complain only attended Friday, which was admittedly one of the worst festival days ever.

Yeah I think a little more than 250. Which is a lot. Wouldn't be that surprised to see them lower their prices this year, but I wouldn't bet on it either... it was relatively successful last year for a first year fest.

Definitely not better than Coachella, but honestly, I thought it was in the same territory. I really loved it and I have made that well known here on this board...

I agree with all of this. Public Transport was a bitch, though, for us out-of-towners. I'll have it wired next year I think, I was fine on Sunday.

I also stayed in a hotel in Oakland, I'm not sure that was the best idea, despite the great price.

hmmm...well then..if the line up is up to snuff or at least a day or 2 I might attend..APW is looking really slim...but I really want to make it out to San Fran this year...either for this or Fever Ray.
However, really? I mean 2008 was probably the most relaxing Coachella ever...no douche bags buggin. No pushing to the main stage for any of the big acts or headliners...everyone was calm and polite. The most relaxing Coachella since 2005.

It was a fucking dumpster fire!!!! Outside lands blew, it was only expecting 25,000-30,000 people to show up on Friday to see Radiohead, instead 58,000 strong were there. it took 45 min to travel in between stages i had to miss beck because i didnt want to miss radiohead. sound cut out twice, transportation was a bitch, no parking, and once you got into the park, no one new where to go. Outside lands was the worst planned festival ever, and i was really exited to have a great 3 day festival in my back yard. it is going to take tool this year for me to go, otherwise they can go fuck themselves.

Woah, all due respect, I don't understand how you could have attended both festivals and come to this conclusion. And I was at both festivals last year. OSL was pretty clusterfuckish at every turn.

much more mellow but with a meh lineup... headliner wise it was lacking... Primus was well primus and i had fun at that. Lupe Fiasco was just that, although not his fault sound kept on going out. Rather forgettable 2 days, but Friday was a real turn off.

fikus222
03-31-2009, 01:06 AM
I also did not really enjoy OSL all that much. As far as Golden Gate Park Festivals the Tibetan Freedom Concert completely blew OSL out of the water.

i did not go fri or sun. only went saturday:

the layout was a little weird and it felt like it took forever to get from one stage to another. but it was spacious escept that narrow area from the main to the second stage.

i do remember them saying they fixed the issues from friday so saturday would go more smooth and it was a first year festival so i gave it alot of slack..

the food was great, beer and all other different styles was very cool..

lineup was ok but good vibes all over the place. had a city party like vibe to it so i gave it a thumbs up for what it was. its not coachella but it is a good regional 2nd tier festival and it did make alot of money last year.. i expect a strong lineup this year now that they have secured the park for 5 years and they can settle in and make it a strong festival...

their biggest issues will be the layout of the park. they cannot cut down anything so they have to work with whats there so it will be interesting....

Boourns
03-31-2009, 07:26 AM
I think because of the layout of the park, a smaller scale festival would be great for Golden Gate Park. Maybe in addition to OSL?

OSL had a lot of problems last year, but overall it was a lot of fun. I had a blast all 3 days. My two suggestions for this year would be to get the sound right, and think about set times and scheduling a little more logically.

zenidogx
03-31-2009, 08:23 AM
OSL had a lot of problems, but considering it was their first year, it has room for improvement. i'm looking forward to another year and i know they'll get some big names. fingers crossed for The Decemberists.

so no KOL, that's the assumption, right? :(

KOL is playing the reading and leeds festivals so they are out. same with the deftones.......

you would think tool, DMB, and the beastie boys would headline.... tool and the beastie boys are being festival whores this year, which is a good thing so it seems like it would fit.. i dont like the idea of DMB headlining saturday. but we'll see soon enough

I would like this too, but considering Superfly is involved (or was, I have no idea what the deal is this year) and that the festival takes place in San Francisco, crunchy kind of comes with the territory.
