Yea at the Avalon, the same day as Mogwai, Soulive, the "secret" El Rey and about a million other shows. I'm about 90% sure I'm picking that over Mogwai. Have you seen Opeth live yet? If you haven't and you're a fan, I'd say it's well worth a trip up to LA. I'm not too crazy about their new album but I listened to Blackwater Park and My Arms, Your Hearse about a hundred times each in high school. Bleak is my favorite song from them. I'm glad you appreciate good metal, Flapjacks. Let me know if you end up going.

I just saw that they're playing the Glasshouse the night before... and it's not sold out... and no, I've never got around to seeing them, but I used to be completely obsessed with them back in 10th grade...

I barely listen to them anymore, which is why I don't keep up on their tour schedules and stuff these days... But I really should go to that! Gah, decisions.

I've seen them twice and they were great both times. I hear that they never disappoint, and I haven't been to the Avalon yet so I'll be there.

I have to say, I'm really glad that High on Fire, Dillinger Escape Plan and even Shadows Fall are all going to be at roo. If for no other reason because I'm loving this new High on Fire album and I can't remember the last time I really enjoyed a new metal album.

Yea, May is like the new September this year. In that same span of a couple weeks I'm seeing Lucero (faxy check them out if you haven't already)

I have some friends who love Lucero. They are playing Phoenix soon and I may or may not see them depending on finances and if friends from Flagstaff are coming down.

They're fucking crazy live, really wild and energetic, and that doesn't come through on the albums very much at all. The last time I saw them they killed a handle of Jack Daniels by the fifth song between the four of them and they still managed to play pretty tight. They're really fun live. I highly recommend going if you can make it.

So this what DJJD (the clue giver) tweeted today, looks like set time clues

sun byrne - could happen you know
about 4 hours ago from web

boss in the night- will stop before light
about 4 hours ago from web

Katz in the day? Maygothatway.
about 4 hours ago from web

I take Sun Bryne to mean he is playing a sunset slot.

Katz, means Katzenjammer playing during the day.

The really interesting one is the "Boss in the night - before the light"

Does this mean what I think it does. Obviously Boss Time is not late night, so what could be the light he is talking about? Lights in the Sky?? hmmmmm Or he is just talking about Bruce's long sets.

Bringing back LITS for one night at roo would be cool.

It's nice to know that Byrne is sunset and not late night so he won't be conflicting with Phish. I'm a little worried about Of Montreal and Erykah Badu also being late night. Aren't they on Friday? Although could that mean Byrne is going to show up as a surprise guest on Sunday, with Phish perhaps? They did cover the whole album of Remain in Light ...

I want to be. I'm actually kinda perplexed why I'm not. I think it's mostly because all the people I wanted to go with (my Coachella crew) have decided not to attend and almost everything I was stoked to see has ended up at Lolla (which all those people will be attending)...

I'll get there, I'm sure.

Absinthe has been legal in the US since 2007 (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/12/arts/12conn.htm?_r=1)

[In spring 2007] a French brand, Lucid, made its debut here, using 19th-century distilling methods and replicating chemical analyses of pre-ban absinthe. A Swiss absinthe, Kübler. appeared on the American market a few weeks ago, using a 1863 family formula.

chiapet
05-01-2009, 07:42 PM
Right, Blinken, but it's not "really" absinthe.

Blinken
05-01-2009, 07:46 PM
Yes it is, did you read that article? When they are using formulas from 1863 I would consider that "real" absinthe.
http://realabsinthe.blogspot.com/2007/06/more-real-absinthe-coming-to-usa.html

4. Effectively, the US regulations are being brought in line with the EU standards. This has been done by administrative fiat (based - to simplify - on an expanded definition of "margin of error" when it comes to thujone testing), not legislation, but the effect will be the same

apostle2
05-01-2009, 07:47 PM
I even had a hard time finding real absinthe in europe, you have to read the labels and see if it's the real stuff or just the same lame shite they sell here. i have never actually gotten my hands on the real stuff.

Who am I to tell you no? I am just glad the ATP line is not must-see for me. I'd be going to APW if not for a family obligation.

I'm just lucky I am thinking of these instead of being interested in OSL, ACL, and Lolla. thank god those didn't hit me.

TickleMeElmo
05-01-2009, 08:33 PM
From all the research I've done, the absinthe here in the US is the real deal... just not as potent as other international brands. Both contain thujone, the ingredient FDA said was a no-no, but a very small amount.

I've tried both Kubler and Lucid. Kubler tastes like shit, Lucid is decent, just don't take shots of it. That's bad news waiting to happen.

Also, I was at a club last night and on the TV they were showing Moulin Rouge. I've never seen it before... but it looked like a fucked up movie. I also need to drag our tent inside from the garage, wash it and try to set it up by myself--and look for other related camping stuff.

Any tips on what airlines websites to check? I've been looking at Expedia, Southwest, amd US Air with nothing under $305 at a reasonable time (I figure I CAN'T leave Nashville at 6am on Monday morning--who's gonna take me to the airport that early??)

Amy, you'd be flying in and camping with us, so you we can put your tent up for you. I don't think you'd actually need anything else. Roo probably doesn't get very cold at night (comments veterans?) so even just bringing blankets if you don't have a sleeping bag would probably work, though it'd make for bulky packing.

I don't like anise so I'm not really that crazy about absinthe. I've been told that Czech absinthe frequently omits the anise though (so it's less licorice-y tasting). Josh, I really like Moulin Rouge, but to enjoy it I think you have to go into it expecting a cheesy over the top musical. It has its moments.

Clubs - I feel awkward in them too. I like bars where there is a straight forward understanding that we're there to drink and hit on people. Clubs I am not sure. I end up in a booth nursing drinks while my friends come to check on me because they think I'm having a bad time. I'm not. I'm just not sure what I should be doing. Dancing is awkward in clubs. I will dance at shows. I don't like to dance while people are sitting around watching others dance (hypocritical I know because that's what I end up doing). I am not able to commit to actually dancing so I do it very half-heartedly and look stupid. I think it's also a matter of the type of music played in the club, for example, electronic I am hopeless, but '''urban''' clubs, well I feel stupid but at least I can figure out how to dance.

The odd thing is that I used to love to dance, was a good dancer, actually studied dance, etc. I think getting boobs + booty made me an awkward dancer. :/

It gets down to low 60's at night, so I usually just use blankets in the tent, and wear a hoodie. and re: clubs, put me in the "out of place" column. I always think it's a good idea, then have no idea what the fuck to do when I get there.

The odd thing is that I used to love to dance, was a good dancer, actually studied dance, etc. I think getting boobs + booty made me an awkward dancer. :/

You're doing it wrong.

I'm not sure I understand the difference between a club and a bar. Is it the presence of a dancefloor? I've had a lot of fun dancing at bars/clubs, but it has to be the right environment and you have to be in the right state of mind (getting wasted, fun friends, good music, enthusiastic crowd, a craving for debauchery and sleaze). I've been to plenty of places that there was no hope too.

On a Bonnaroo related topic, I'm listening to Springsteen's Nebraska for the first time and I'm liking it pretty well. "State Trooper" is a fucking killer track. Spare and creepy.

chiapet
05-02-2009, 01:10 PM
Maybe there's no real difference. When I say club, I mean someplace that is primarily focused on dancing and music (not live, usually). Bars with a jukebox are a totally different story for me. I will be all over that after a couple of drinks. I mean, for god's sake I do -literally- dance on the bus with my ipod. I think it's just the spectators at clubs that weird me out.

Thank you thh, I had just been wondering if it was more a "bring jugs of water for brushing teeth" situation or if there were plumbed facilities. Have no idea what kind of camping it is. :)

I know what you mean. There's definitely different breeds of clubs, and it seems the more upscale they get, the more awkward it is to dance at. But if you find the right down and dirty dive joint, most everyone around is just there to get down and make fools of themselves and it's pretty infectious. These places usually have DJs that know what the fuck they're doing. There's pretty much at least one notorious gay bar in every town that falls into this category.

I loved dancing at clubs long after I was really allowed to, chia. I'm weird though--I would go alone, not talk to anybody, and dance alone, and that was fun for me. edit: Sometimes I would also be the first person on the dancefloor.

Also, re:showers/sinks/etc that reminded me I need to bring flip flops in case I decide on a shower! So thanks.

95% of California clubs that I went to sucked. I noticed that if something was genuinely fun, it became kind of hip, so people started going there and it became very self aware and then just burned out. Packs of hipsters like hyenas flocking from one bar to the next, sucking out each one's essence until it become boring and gentrified like everything else. I guess that's one good thing about the Midwest being hopelessly un-hip, even if it means a lot more shitty music and creepy scumbags.

you will still definitely be able to get the front, definitely, the work involved will just be a little shitty. there are usually separate lines outside the pit for different bands. so if you line up there early and say you are waiting for the beastie boys, you will form your own line, and other people will line up separately throughout the day for the other acts.

Honestly, I hope this doesn't come out the wrong way, but I can't imagine there being THAT many people lined up for Beasties at Bonnaroo. I just don't think the people that look forward to seeing them will really be wanting the pit that badly. I could be wrong. But same goes for Bruce, even though of course he's a bigger headliner, so there will still be alot of people. But in terms of fanbase... there aren't a lot of wait-in-line-for-pit types the way there are for NIN.

That said though, NIN and Phish will probably have huge lines, albeit maybe not quite as big as PJ, Tool, or Radiohead's in the past...

I don't think this has come up, when I went in 07 I don't remember anything like that. I never got to the very front but I get pretty close for a few acts. I thought they just have the barricades to split the crowd up and nothing more.

pancakespancakes
05-03-2009, 08:53 PM
Thi is super weird. So you have to wait in a line on the side of the stage to get up front, no matter what time the band you want to see plays, 1 pm or 1 am? Is this thing a clusterfuck, or what? It seems like no one here really has a good idea about it.

How hard is it to get close without doing the pit? Is it a view from really far back, or more like the second rail is at Coachella?

In general, what are crowds like? I like being up close. Someone explain.

Pancakes, how far back were you for Pearl Jam then?

I really really like being up close as well. In the end, this system is a good thing. I watched The Raconteurs from the second row, and I got there only 15-20 minutes before they started. Same thing for B.B. King and Widespread Panic, except for those two, I got there literally as they started.

Pearl Jam I watched from the second rail, right behind the pit. Which was nice, because I had a last-ditch effort to not be in the pit and get there, and it was done very easily. The view was fantastic. It's pretty much the same distance as being on the second rail at Coachella. Probably a bit farther away though. But it feels the same...

In terms of lining up at the side of the stages, it is surprisingly well-organized. Not a clusterfuck (I hate that expression) by any means. There's cutting in line, but it's never successful. There was a lot of drama in the Pearl Jam line about that though, which turned me off. Everyone sits in their spot in line until about 20-30 minutes before they let you in, and then everyone stands up. You can't see anything onstage from the line though, because it's too far over from the stage.

paulb
05-03-2009, 08:57 PM
well thats fuckin great....that really makes me choked....

pancakespancakes
05-03-2009, 08:59 PM
That's why I would hate waiting in line all day though, is because I couldn't stand only listening to the music going on the main stage there and not being able to watch what was happening.

So even if nobody I cared for was playing the other stages that evening, and I did actually want to see whoever was playing the What Stage that day, it would still be lame.

The only band I would ever camp out for the pit for would be the Allman Bros. But I probably would not have to wait in line too long for them anyway...

paulb
05-03-2009, 09:01 PM

Yep, my boss constantly tells me don't put in my leave slips that much in advance so as I put in for my Sasquatch and NIN/JA Vegas time I mention to her that in June I was going to need 4 days. Roughly 35 hours and I will only have 23 hours saved up by then. The county will apparently take disciplinary action against anyone who takes unpaid time off in the next 6 weeks until the new fiscal year.

Here's the kicker. They plan on telling us this during a meeting that takes place tomorrow and the second kicker is even better. Between July of this year and July of next year they ar FORCING us to take 6 days of our choosing off WITHOUT PAY!

Fuck these people. I'm angry today. It actually might all be perfect timing. I have been considering finally looking for a new gig but was putting it off until I had 2 years of stability here. Guess when that 2 year anniversary is? Tomorrow :)

All I was really waiting for I suppose was these music festivals to finish up so I didn't have to request time at a new place but once Bonnaroo is done all I have is a trip to Chicago in August.

Wish me luck with all this megabullshit.

This line thing is really interesting. I would be willing to wait for NIN I guess if people want to wait with me.

On a completely different note, I don't think I want to do shrooms ever again. They made me seriously nauseous, wanting to die for 4 or 5 hours, and the whole next day I still felt vaguely nauseous and tired. :( It makes me wish for acid all the more.

Wow, and you guys both asked months in advance I assume. Think you'll find a way to get time off?

I've made up my mind i'm going. I'm just asking for the Roo time off now because every time I try to put in for stuff early they tell me to wait until 2 weeks prior. I just mentioned it as it's still over a month away and she's like "good luck". She then tried to figure out how we can make it less hours. We are only allowed to make up 1 hour per pay period and only if we took time during that pay period so i'm basically screwed.

It's funny. I have like 75 hours of "sick" time that is only allowed to be used if you have a serious illness and doctors paperwork so no one ever gets to use their sick time. It sits there. We don't get paid for it and it just adds up until one day when you might be seriously ill.

Rules are retarded. Seriously. How do they come up with this shit? For 6 weeks no unpaid PTO is allowed then the following 12 months they will require 54 hours of unpaid PTO?

pfft

When he arrived on Wednesday his excuse was that he just didn't get enough sleep during the weekend. How do you no show/no call and not get fired?! Yet they want to take action against a person who is at least somewhat responsible about it. Plus they are bleeding money, shoudln't they be happy they won't have to pay me for a few days?

I guess we'll see what happens. I still haven't submitted the time I guess we'll see what happens when I do.

If it's someplace you don't care to stay for a long time (meaning, if you don't mind pissing off your supervisor), I'd be tempted to take it to your manager's manager. You tried to submit the time off request and she would not accept it (made you wait) in light of a yet-to-be-announced policy. She is trying to delay you so you will fall under the policy. I would approach her one more time and reiterate the dates when you tried to make the request, and if it doesn't work, go to her manager. The policy makes sense for someone asking for vacation time now, but it's shitty for them to tell you have to wait to make leave requests and then to change the policy during the interim.

It's the county so there is no office politics in the sense that every rule comes from the faceless admin of the county. My bosses don't give a rats ass but they have to justify me to the HR/PTO time keeper peeps as they have to answer to their big bosses. It goes for everyone and not just me.

This new policy was going to be mentioned at the meeting tomorrow. She gave me the impression they just got the notification a few days ago.

Ultimately all my ranting is silly. I'm a terrible employee. I just measure what others get away with compared to me rather than simply follow rules and be a model employee. I get away with not working so much here, I really feel silly ranting in retrospect. I will let the chips fall where they may and figure out my hand after it is dealt. :D

PS

I believe I know the answer to this, if I may. She likes LSD better because MDMA makes her depressed and anxious in the days following her roll. It does that with a lot of people. It did that to me for like 2 or 3 days. Sorry for speaking for you, Zeezllez. :)

As far as I'm concerned, I enjoy rolling more than tripping. I like the idea of being grounded in reality a little bit more rather than being in a different dimension. The E hangover was worth what I experienced while on it.

Haha. I think Faxy created an irrelevant argument. I never insinuated that LSD and shrooms were the same trips. He arbitrarily brought that up. That has no impact on what I'm trying to say.

I'd rather roll than have any sort of trip. If LSD makes you trip, regardless of how different it is than shrooms, then I'd rather do MDMA. I was, in no way, discussing the differences between tripping on LSD vs shrooms.

And I enjoy other dimensions as well. Words are being put into my mouth left and right. :)

Faxy and Tommy,
I prefer LSD to everything (and 2ci slightly less than LSD) because I almost always have a good trip, I feel happy, I see visuals, I clear out my mind, and I feel good the next day. Rolling can be fun within a 2-3 hour period when I am peaking, but I don't remember everything clearly afterward, and I feel completely blah the next day and almost suicidal a few days afterward--not anxious really. I should point out when I've had a bad trip on LSD, I can feel really anxious the next day almost as if I am having a panic attack, but that only happened once. I also worry about rolling around other people because one can be REALLY ANNOYING to other people while rolling. I tend to feel more in control of myself while on LSD. Shrooms can be really interesting if I can somehow avoid the stomach discomfort--that completely dominated my last trip. I was watching an episode of Angel, and that demon Lorne was singing in Vegas in these extravagant, brightly-colored clothes which literally made me nauseous and I had to rush to the bathroom. After that just about any stimulus made me nauseous--light, talking, smells etc.

And Faxy, your vacation situation sucks. I hope you can find a way to work it out or leave your job if you have to (same goes for Salah).

Thank you. That's my point. If they are both mind fucks then they are the same for the purposes of what we were talking about. The subtle differences don't matter in this conversation. It's rolling vs being generally mind fucked (which I actually do enjoy, just not as much as rolling).

Tommy, i'm just being contrary today but my argument still stands that you can't know what you would rather do if you have not tried an LSD trip.

Tommy, you are in for a treat at that Neko/ Calexico show. I am hearing rumors or something about her playing with Calexico as they are both scheduled to hit the stage at the same time or something. Should be nice.

If you haven't started listening to Neko Case Blacklisted, start now. Joe and John played guitar and drums on that album with her. Not sure if it was just one track or not but I love that album.

Also, I took some pics and youtubes of the Calexico show and posted them in the Calexico thread if you didn't see yet.

Actually you are arguing with yourself. No one said anything about them being the exact same. All I have been saying is you should reserve judgment until you try LSD. Comparing your MDMA experience to "trips" in general is fine but your only expereince with trips is Shrooms which is in fact a less intense, less visual trip, so that very difference might sway you one way or another.

Alright we should keep going then. :)

You don't have to immerse yourself into LSD to know what it's like. One time will do. I heard several Radiohead songs and didn't really like them. I never gave their full albums a chance. That doesn't mean I didn't hear a full album. It just means that I didn't sit with it and absorb it as much as I could have. I dismissed Arcade Fire as well. I couldn't understand what the fuck he was saying in the songs and the music was just noisy so I figured it was hipster shit but something kept me coming back. It took me a year to get it.

The analogy is just kind of poor. Sorry Tommy.

The "thought loop" is intense for me too. I think I know what you're talking about. I think/hear/see in perfect patterns that just loop themselves. That was probably a shitty explanation, but that's one of the trippy parts I had on shrooms. And it can get annoying after a while. I shroomed for Portishead and it was the greatest thing I have ever experienced. Just amazing. Yeah Getting to the main stage was a serious challenge, I think me and my buddy laid out by the bamboo sculpture during kraftwerk while the shrooms came on. I even thought we wouldn't make it to Portishead for a few minutes. We ended up at the right sound tower and even had a railing to hold myself up.
