Would it be better if I karaoked the song in the campground? Because I totally will. Actually, I'd prefer to karaoke Time To Pretend.

I would prefer you doing the karaoke to them doing the karaoke.

re: allowed internet access at work

I couldn't take it anymore Tommy. You weren't e-mailing me nearly as frequently as I would have liked so I had to infiltrate the IT department and remove the filters they had placed on my pc. I'm relieved I can finally see your posts again.

Something weird is going on economically out here in the bay area. I've never gotten so many recruiter calls and pings from friends at startups as in the last few weeks. Don't they know all the money is gone and that we're all doomed?

I have never seen Tommy's, obviously, so I'm not inclined to write it off as terrible... YET. MGMT on the other hand. :nono "not terrible" != "good"

Edited, oh weird. How funny that p-i-n-g gets edited and marijuana doesn't. Hahahha.

tommy - p-i-n-g/ed? just what it is... damn I can't even explain it because I want to use p-i-n-g in the explanation. I usually use that in the context of someone notifying or nudging me about something, especially when it's online only (email, IM, facebook, etc) and is like a one line thing.

Mark, I saw MGMT a few times last year -- they were actually getting better as they went on. It might not be terrible.

I believe they got better, however I don't believe there would be anything positive or good about a late night MGMT set. I enjoyed them at Coachella and love the album but the other two times I saw them they were not very good. Makes me wonder if they just pressed play at the Coachella performance.

Ok I will tell the story.

Bug used to go around in threads and post a picture of a radar screen except he would call it lamedar. In addition with the picture we would say p1ng. Then he made a lamedar alias, and it snowballed from there and annoyed Dani enough to the point where the word p1ng was censored entirely.

Just to let everyone know, the Yeasayer/MGMT late night rumour does have some truth behind it. Apparently somewhere the lead singer of Yeasayer said something to the effect of "I think, I THINK, we are playing a late night set with MGMT at Bonnaroo."

He repeated "I think" and he added emphasis. So who knows.

A lot of people on the Roo board think one of the tents on saturday night will go Yeasayer->MGMT->Of Montreal. (Of Montreal has no basis behind it, unlike the Yeasayer/MGMT rumour. Where have you been? They totally grew on me. Way cute and they were pretty fucking good opening for Beck those two nights. Vast improvement from Coachella which I still stand by my opinion that they totally fucking sucked then

Looking back on the 3.5 MGMT shows I saw last year, I feel like both their Coachella and Lolla sets were, at best, fun. Their sound didn't translate very well outdoors. But you're right, they seemed to have significantly improved by the time we saw them open for Beck. Those were excellent sets. Felt like the singer was more confident with his voice, too.

Still probably won't see them at Roo, however. Unless, of course, they're rumored to be unveiling some new material.

Also, chia, I wish I had a pair of glasses that were half as rad as those!

Yep, and his voice reminds me of Jay Farrar's voice of Uncle Tupelo and Sun Volt fame. Jay's content is far better though which much stronger lyrics and deep emotion while The Hold Steady seems a bit more general with happy, sad and fun songs with little genre variation. With Uncle Tupelo you have Jay's rich voice, strong lyrics and heavy country and punk styles throughout their catalog. They were more alt country than cowpunk though.

Word on a better side of things but sticking with the alt. country discussion. The new Neko Case is so rich and wonderful. I love her voice so much. I can't wait to see her at Bonnaroo and oddly enough I can't stand the New Pornographers. Other than just watching her, the music is not enjoyable to me at all. Neko needs to stick with the solo music. It's far superior.

I've always been up in the air about The Hold Steady, too. Some stuff I really enjoy, but I can't listen to more than a couple songs of theirs consecutively. Walked past their live sets at fests before, never thought they sounded very good...

I just don't think outside at festivals during midday is a good fit for them. Now a smoky, grimy bar packed with a couple hundred drunks, and I bet it's a grand ol' time.

i have a dilemma, i was wanting to cut my hair short and also dye it before the festivals, but now a bunch of my boss type people are talking about coming to my work location prior/between, and i don't think pink hair will uh go over so well. very disappointed. considering staying fuck it, but it'd be a dumb reason to have to look for a job. (only a few years ago i'd have said i'd never work anywhere that wouldn't deal with me looking a certain way but now i'm too lazy to look for new jobs :P )

so now i'm thinking maybe i just leave it long and dye it darker and put pink streaks on the under-side so that when i wear ponytails or pull it up, there they are. hrmph :/

i'm not sure why i'm typing this to a thread of mostly guys.

If you're talking about the real Guns N Roses then it's not happening. A promoter (Live Nation?) offered Guns N Roses something around $120 million to re-unite for a tour, but it has to be the original lineup. Axl won't do it because he really doesn't like anybody in the band. This was according to Steven Adler who I heard on The Opie & Anthony Show last week.

If you want Axl and just some band then fuck that, I will not address that question.

ROCK BANDŽ GETS A SECOND DOSE OF COUNTRY
Cambridge, Mass. - February 20, 2009 - Harmonix and MTV Games today announced the debut of five alternative country acts to the Rock BandŽ Music Store catalog of downloadable content including artists Neko Case, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Drive-By Truckers and Old 97’s. Rock Band fans will also get a 3-pack from alternative rock band Jimmy Eat World.

“Alt Country 01” 5-pack features a signature mix of alternative country sounds from bluegrass and rockabilly to honky-tonk rock. The 5-pack includes “People Got A Lotta Nerve” from Neko Case’s soon-to-be released album Middle Cyclone (March 3, 2009), “Can’t Let Go” by Grammy winning singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams from her album Car Wheels On A Gravel Road (1998) and Steve Earl’s “Satellite Radio” from his album Washington Square Serenade (2007). The 5-pack also features “Three Dimes Down” from southern rock band Drive-By Truckers featured on the Brighter Than Creation’s Dark (2008) album and the Old 97’s live recording “Timebomb” from the band’s Alive & Wired (2005) album.

Jimmy Eat World makes its second Rock Band appearance with a 3-pack that includes “Lucky Denver Mint” from the band’s 1999 album Clarity. In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the album’s release Jimmy Eat World will set out on a short 10 stop tour starting February 23rd where they’ll play Clarity in its entirety for the crowd. The Jimmy Eat World 3-Pack will also feature tracks “Futures” (Futures, 2004) and “Sweetness” from the band’s 2001 album Bleed American. The band’s hit “The Middle” was featured on the Rock Band 2 soundtrack.

Hrm... I don't think rage has "bad" taste in music, it's just taste that is partially incompatible with my own. The bands that he likes that I don't, for the most part, I understand why they are popular or well respected, but they're bands that I will never like, not with any amount of effort on my part. But every now and then he surprises me by popping out a band that I'd never think he'd be into or someone he shouldn't even know about because they're like 10 or 20 years before his time (and not an obvious link to the bands he talks about). So I respect that he's done his homework.

paul :nono he knows he has musical tastes that people consider crap but he doesn't bend so you gotta respect that too.

Tommy you will grow to love and admire my tastes really. I'm so irrational about what I like sometimes, but it's always right.

chiapet
03-18-2009, 11:42 AM
So if I listen to DEP it's okay, and if rage does, it's not? :) Do I get a free pass when these are bands I never got THAT into and mostly listened to ~10 years ago?

I think that when my taste in music seems scattered (or, as you claim, I don't seem very discriminating), it's because I've gone through a lot of phases and influences and some of those are VERY disconnected from what I'd claim to like most now, or what it seems like I should have liked based on my current favs.

Have you given the Aggrolites a chance live?

:) The best I can say of Aggrolites live is that they're like a cover band of better bands' songs. They're not /bad/ they just come across as being unoriginal and played out.

I agree in that their music is not the most original music out there, but live they are an extremely fun band. They play very well, and their cover of Don't Let Me Down owns.

Nope and, unless there's NOBODY who I even remotely care about playing at the same time, I won't give them a chance at Coachella either.

You don't get a free pass for listening to that garbage DEP. But you score points for introducing me to some good stuff.

Just off the top of my head:

Dillinger Escape Plan
The Aggrolites
Drop The Lime
Liars
His dislike of Mogwai

Why you making me bash Ragey? I like the guy. C'mon, Faxy.

Sorry. I must admit the Mogwai thing got to me too. Maybe he just hasn't given them enough of a chance or requires some sort of lyrics? Hmmm.

I just know what I was listening to at his age (listen to my old man speak) and it was probably worse. ICP worse than everything. I try not to criticize taste too much because taste is an evolving thing. he won't be listening to any of those bands in 10 years.

Right -- I think cover bands can be fun. :) A helluva lot of fun, depending on what they cover and how well they carry it off. I guess unless a band bills themselves as a cover band, I expect their set to be mostly original music and possibly a small portion covers.

A well established band pulling out covers that are not at all their style and actually pulling it off makes me love them like I never would have before.

Perfect example -- Belle & Sebastian were doing random covers on their, hrm, 2001? tours, the one with Jonathan Richman. I've seen this band a few times, including a few nights of that tour, and the only show of theirs that truly stands out in my mind is a set where:
1) They decided to cover This Charming Man (Smiths), Stuart was had laryngitis and jokingly asked the audience if anyone wanted to come sing it. Someone in the front row was going nuts, they pulled him on stage, this should be terrible right?

Best damned Smiths cover I've ever heard, the guy was spot on.

Then.. Then...
2) A bit further in, they were having trouble figuring out what to play due and started a few riffs of Billie Jean kind of jokingly, everyone cheered, they went through it. It was both awkward and amazing at the same time.

You guys missed the good old days when all I liked was ICP and Marilyn Manson. I remember like 2 solid years of that shit. I don't regret the Manson though, that guy puts on a killer show and the Mechanical Animals tour was pretty damn great. I really didn't listen to much more though. That was the peak of my closed minded musical taste. Ultimately I got out of the rut when I started listening to the Refreshments again and then back to alternative into some indie by 2001-2002 or so.

Mogwai, man.... let's just say I DID NOT APPRECIATE Mogwai enough as is deserved until ATP last year. Holy shit. My eyes actually well up just thinking about it.

These are the bands that I saw on that day of ATP - not the whole weekend - just a day.

Listed in consecutive order: le volume courbe (LOVED!), robin guthrie (was boring I'm sorry to say but I adore the guy), gemma hayes (you've heard corinna's story about meeting Kevin Shields who was standing by us), spectrum (playing tons of spacemen 3), trail of dead... then... mogwai -> dinosaur jr -> MBV on the same stage in a row.

I mean, fucking hell can you imagine getting a better day than that? Only on our pretend dreamland 'create a festival' stuff.

Mark, I LOVED and was obsessed with Manson, from like, let's say 94-96? I started losing interest with Antichrist Superstar and completely dropped at Mechanical Animals. I still think POAAF is one of the strongest most well put together albums of that time in terms of interestingness and having a logical theme/progression through the album (something I over-enjoy), and the mixes album was also pretty fucking awesome.

Man, I used to play the hell out of that album, with my windows open, even in winter, there was another room across the quad where I'd hear someone playing the album too super late at night, I was into them enough that I actually tracked down who was playing MM and paid that guy a visit...

Sushy knows I don't care about The Hold Steady. The lead singer has the most generic voice usually, and when he actually tries to do something with it then it just gets annoying. I was just saying that I'm more likely to see them than The Aggrolites. That's not a huge compliment for The Hold Steady, though.

Yep, hard to disagree. Combine the themes with the on stage dramatics and this guy was perfectionist. He would have temper tantrums back stage if something went wrong with the lights or something was off a bit. It was all about the show. Theatrics and pushing buttons. I liked his interview piece in Bowling for Columbine during the peak of the Columbine controversy in Colorado. Moore asked Manson what he would say to the kids who murdered the other school friends. Manson said he wouldn't ask them anything. He would listen to them and see what they had to say, something their parents probably weren't doing. They really demonized Manson with that bullshit. He was quite the scapegoat and in the end I think it came out that these kids A) weren't goth and B) weren't Manson fans.

I haven't listened to Portrait in forever. Now I want to. I think I might have to look into that Manson Slayer concert coming to Phoenix this year.
