Ohhh you went to ATP last year, you were around them. I'm sure they're fine folks.

That last sentence hit the nail on the head. I used to listen to a lot more music when I was still in college. Now I can barely keep up with new albums of my favorite artists. C'est la vie.

Yup! I met a few of them there (though I am not sure I ever caught everyone's board names). ATP was all kinds of awesome. In addition to meeting maybe a dozen coachella board people, I kept randomly running into people I know... people from SF that I didn't know were going, friends from college. And this was, you know, when we weren't running into, say, Kevin Shields. It was pretty nuts.

And YES I think my fond memories of college are mostly based on having had almost infinite time to spend listening to and exploring music, whether online, perusing friends' collections, browsing record stores for several hours a day. This was also around the time that MP3 started to become widely used (okay, widely used amongst computer dorks), so a handful of bands were even starting to post their music on their brand new web sites to entice people to listen. Back then we still traded tapes, since CDRs were still so expensive. I had a stereo, but also had one of those bookshelf dual cassette + CD changer kits, specifically for mix taping. I used to spend hours and hours going through both my own music and other tapes I'd received, making mixes for people... you could tell how much I liked you by how good the mix was and how much time I'd spent on it. :)

Not to mention having endless time to watch movies, play games, hang around coffee shops all night, go out dancing. I used to spend at least 4 or 5 hours EVERY NIGHT on the phone talking to friends.

Now I rarely have time to listen to anything, never talk to my friends or see them... yay adult life. :P

We agree that Confessions on the Dance Floor is a great record. I also enjoy Kylie Minogue's Fever. Do you like that one? I bet you do.

Thanks for the Phish info. But why pay extra for FLAC? I always have to end up decoding flac files in wav. or mp3. so I can listen to them on my iTunes/iPod.

FLAC = higher quality files.

the mp3s are 256 kbps...wav files are 1141 kbps.
you can play FLAC in winamp...and even windows media player with a codec that is avail for download. but your ipod/itunes will require it be changed from flac to apple lossless or from flac to wav.

for people that can't hear the difference, mp3s are fine. for people who CAN tell a difference, such as I can, the FLAC files are the way to go.

If you convert FLAC files to WAV then to mp3, doesn't it take away the originial quality of the FLAC file? I convert FLAC to WAV using Winamp, but is there a way to play the original FLAC file on an iPod?

I don't understand what is so offensive about these things. Why is it flaunting or obnoxious? Can't it just be sharing with others? I have seen countless people compliment others on the shows they are going to. I fail to see this as the equivalent to bragging.

You aren't making any sense. I convert flac and listen to them in whatever format they are converted to on my ipod. I assume that means I lose the sound quality.

I gave you a link that opens up the ipod to play Flac and Ogg without loss of quality or having to convert to an ipod format.

to clear up the FLAC business...

it doesn't matter what player you use. most players, if they don't support flac by default, will have a codec that you can download. the exception may be itunes, considering that they love their proprietery stuff...so you may have to convert to apple lossless. flac is also a lossless codec, so they are basically one in the same thing.

yes you will still lose quality if you convert a good flac or apple lossless file to mp3. but if you convert to wav from flac, you lose nothing. and of course, mp3s have different levels of quality from the normal 128kbps to 320kbps. yes there are speeds lower than 128, but trust me...you will be able to tell the difference if you go below 128.

mp3 format basically gives the file a "haircut". it cuts off a bunch of high and low frequencies that a lot of people can't tell are missing and leaves the middle part. the lower the kbps is, the more frequencies it cuts off.

like i said, a lot of people can't hear the difference because their ears are not trained to hear it, but if you are an audiophile, you can definitely hear the difference between mp3 and wav.

phew...that should do it. :D

p.s. i'm an audiophile...if you couldn't tell....

I recommend Halloween in Vegas '98.

It serves as a great representation of the many aspects of Phish. There are 3 sets, the first is regular material, the second is Phish's costume (them covering Velvet Underground's album Loaded) and the 3rd is again their own material, but jammed out for extended periods.

It was/is an awesome show, quite literally my most crazy Halloween ever.

This is definitely the first year they've waited to announce the comedians though. That's what really irks me. For someone who finds a lot of value in this, it's a bit disturbing, and it makes me consider that they're actually trying to abolish the comedy tent altogether this year.

These things don't matter to me until the set times are published :D

If Faith No More anounce a July date in the UK... then I will be going to Europe. Not only for FNM though, but also to see Madness, The Specials and Michael Fucking Jackson.

Did you just say Michael Jackson? He performs? It can't be good. Can it? I would think bad replicas of his most dated hits.

He is doing a 10 show stint at Londons O2 arena. They are expected to sell out imediately. After this, MJ will anounce another 10 dates at O2. If those all sell out, he will add another 10 dates. His first show is July 8. Madness and The Specials are playing a show together in London on July 17th. If Faith No More anounce a date anywhere in the UK in that time frame... then all the stars will be aligned for me to go.

How entrepreneurial!

Not a bad video. Still personally hoping there's a conflicting late night Animal Collective set, though. I don't think that conflict would upset anybody but pancakes, really.

And rage, I'd have forked out that sort of $ to see MJ 12 years ago maybe, but definitely not now. Same goes for U2 but for completely different reasons.

If I am already in London, I will fork over whatever it costs to see MJ. I might not ever get another chance. And I wouldn't fly over there just for him, like I said. MJ would just be a bonus on top of seeing 3 of my all time favorite bands.

I'm beginning to think more and more that I might miss both Phish shows. Based on some videos, I'm scratching my head wondering why this light show is going to be any better than some I've seen before...of bands whose music I also enjoy...

Phish brings lots and lots of good drugs. Whether you like the music or even watch the sets, them being there will be make the weekend much better overall for anyone who wants to get down.

Oh and Josh, don't be surprised if David Byrne does something with Phish ...

I totally understand and agree with this. I mean, I'm going to see some of Phish, I'm sure. But I don't need a full set. I could come catch the last 30-60 mins of the late night set, and I'm sure I'll see them a while on Sunday.

I'm just hoping there's some cool late night stuff other than Phish on Friday. That day is too loaded for there not to be, right?

I am really hoping there is something decent conflicting with their sets. I'm going to check them out, but I as well feel like I could only give it 30-60 minutes.

Well obviously there's going to be good stuff conflicting with them on Friday because it will be late night. Sunday they'll probably close it out though, so there won't be any conflicts.

Exactly why I'm thinking Sunday is a better shot for me to see a bit of Phish. How does the Late Night thing work, EpicBackwaterFaceMelt? All stages going at once? Multiple bands play after the headliner is done? Just curious.

Yeah, late nights are when the worst conflicts at bonnaroo are.

Nice, I'm so much more excited for this schedule to come out than Coachella's. Don't know why, but I definitely am. I think it's because the whole "brand new" thing is really exciting, haven't felt that in a while.

It's true :nono. That would be a laaaaaame conflict for me. Probably the worst possible one I can think of.

Otherwise, Bonnaroo is looking pretty much free of nasty conflicts for me this year based on the tentative day-by-day schedule. Which is reason to be happy.

You a fan of Girl Talk or Crystal Castles? I am 99% sure they will be doing late night sets.

Ha you're always so confident, man. Though I agree those are strong possibilities. I'm crossing fingers for AC, though, I want that late night, all crazy at the Roo, set.

Four of my crew absolutely love Girl Talk, even got on stage last show in January in Des Moines, so I'm sure they'd be there, I've seen him twice, could go either way. Would like to see Crystal Castles but have heard nothing but bad live reviews...

The Bonnaroo board is 100% sure Girl Talk and Crystal Castles will be late night sets. There is no evidence to back them up, but over there it seems like they take it for fact. I have hear Crystal Castles are awful live too, but I have heard they are still pretty funny beause the crowd is dancing. My fiancee really want to see them, so I will be there. I am pretty sure I will be at Girl Talk too.

I would love for an AC late night set, I don't see it happening though. Im imagining around 5 in one of the tents. If it does happen though, I would gladly miss Phish, Girl Talk and/or Crystal Castles for them.

Yeah I'm thinking the chances of AC late night are about 50%. I'm not going to put my money on it but it also seems very possible. They've played in the daytime at many other festivals and they will at Sasquatch this year... but then it's just not the same without their lights right now.

Yeah I'll be seeing them five times this year... so if one is in the daylight, it will actually be a nice change for me... but I do want you guys to get the full experience of seeing them in the dark, as to better convert you to my side, haha.

Flapjacks, I still might see your precious Animal Collective here in Albuquerque. I don't know yet. But I think that might be a good representation since it's in a small club and they can give me the "full experience."

I would rather see Phish at this point...would be loads cheaper too...with fees and what not and being that I usually buy 2 tickets for every show...NIN/JA would cost me around $400 and Depeche Mode around $250. Those 2 are not worth more then even one day of Coachella...that being said...Lolla is looking like a steal...

Eh, I'm starting to convince myself to go to both anyway. Jacob doesn't want to go, so I'd only have to get one ticket. Still, so expensive. I'm still kicking myself for not going to NIN in Vegas last year--I don't care either way about JA opening.
