Paul, I will probably see the Decemberists. Will depend on what the schedule looks like.

pancakes, I might go see AC. It will depend on the schedules... everything does for me really. :) So can you briefly explain to me why I should listen to (or watch at Bonnaroo) Phish? Point me to a video or two you feel is representative?

Watching that Bjork video is making me wish I hadn't fucked up 2007 so bad.

Bands I'm actually interested in at Bonnaroo: Beastie Boys, David Byrne, Al Green, Erykah Badu, TV On The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Band Of Horses, Girl Talk, Of Montreal, Animal Collective, Neko Case, Femi Kuti, Grizzly Bear, St. Vincent, Yeasayer. I'll more than likely endure BOSS TIME out of curiosity, and watch a little bit of Phish to see what the hype's all about. There's a bunch of other bands on there that I'll probably watch too that I'm either not familiar enough with their music yet (Wilco) or am pretty indifferent to but don't mind (MGMT).

I thought you were one of the people on my side when critiquing the live videos people were posting. I like the new album too, but even songs from that album are absolutely horrible live. Unless they started understanding that they suck live and switched it up. I'm not sure. Do you like yelping by chance?

Up until this week, I haven't watched a single YouTube video, as I've only recently gotten on the boards away from work, where it's a banned site. Just basing it on a what I'd heard prior, which yes, included a lot of yelping.

New album didn't really have any of that. Just a really fucking experimental, psychedelic, modern Beach Boys kinda sound, I think. I don't know man, I think it's pretty good.

I haven't seen a single live YouTube of anything recent, or anything at all, really. I just got really into the new album, and back into most of Strawberry Jam.

I don't know why we're talking about them in this thread... but first of all, this is funny because I'm actually seeing them tonight, for my first time since Coachella. So I just have to comment on that.

But also, JSam, I can link to a couple of videos of their recent live shows if you're curious at all. I don't know if you're curious or not, but I can give you a little introduction of some sort if you are, it would only take me a second.

I saw what you did there Blink, lol. That was right up there for me, too.

Wow I am shocked to see people agreeing with me. I was hoping for them at the Roo, maybe next year.

RHCP at Coachella, oh god.... no Californication, and the worst version ever of Higher Ground.

We still had Under The Bridge, which wasn't played the first time i saw RHCP back in 2003

Declare Independence was seriously the highlight.....maybe that and Wake Up+Freedom+Killing In The Name

Well yeah Ragerrrrrr was fucking great. But Under the Bridge means alot more to me.

Again, I like the new album too. I know it didn't have any of that. But the songs off the new album, when performed live, go back to the yelping and disjointed nature. I'm basing my opinion of AC completely on the live video I've seen.

Really? I'll be seeing every single one of them except the Beasties, who I still might see, and Girl Talk, who I probably won't see. I'd skip Femi Kuti as well if she conflicted with someone good... and otherwise those are all bands basically near the top of my own list, among a couple others as mentioned on the last page. I'll ignore your double negative at the end of the post because I know what you meant. But Radiohead CAN do wrong in my eyes. A lot of times, in concert, Thom can become flat and it gets annoying.

RHCP at Coachella 2007 was crap and it wasn't just the setlist. The show had zero energy. I've seen them before and they had tons of energy. They were going through the motions and it sucked for me because I was a big RHCP fan up to that point. I'm not the only person who was there who thought they were lifeless.

I just hate that I don't know who will conflict with who for these festivals, so for bands like them and YYYs, and Band of Horses, I can plan to skip them for someone else at Coachella only to have them conflict with someone else. So maybe I should just not plan on seeing anyone at Bonnaroo.

Yeah exactly. Coachella has a lot more bands I'm seeing period, so they get the edge.

But the YYYs verses Throbbing Gristle is still such a pain for me. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are my favorite live band on the planet. I know I would have way more fun seeing them instead. It worked out last year for me with Kraftwerk vs. Animal Collective. Super rare band I love that I'll never get another chance to see verses my favorite modern band who plays all the time. I got to see the first half of Kraftwerk, which was all of the good songs anyway, and then saw all of AC from the front row. So maybe the same thing could happen again this year.

Only if they went back in time and brought over the 1991 version of RHCP. Not the 2009 version of RHCP. They could've done a set with nothing but BSSM and Californication songs at Coachella and I still would've been pissed. It wasn't the song selection.

P.S. - You are still my boy. Don't ever forget it.

Hahahah yes and you are still my boy Tommy!

But actually I'm not the biggest fan of Throbbing Gristle anyway. I don't find them very "difficult" or anything. I've just never been big on electronic or industrial music. And in terms of listening... I'd definitely take latter-day Autechre over Throbbing Gristle. But they're someone we should all appreciate. They're a very importand band, historically-speaking, and so some due respect should be paid by me. They also totally slay live apparently, but that's irrelevant.

Well, for someone who was extremely excited about the comedy tent... I only went in once last year, and I doubt this year will be much different for me. So I can't imagine you'd go in more than once this year either unless you're willing to sacrifice 5-10 bands you wanted to see instead... it's a bit of a bummer.

If it's looked at as art more than music then I'm ok with it. Because it IS a music and arts festival.

I had zero time to go into the comedy tent, there was too much happening. I think too much time is devoted to seeing a comedian at Bonnaroo. Chris Rock on the main stage last year satisfied my entire comedy craving for the weekend.

It wasn't for me. I just walked right in, was five minutes late, and got a great seat. And that was for the headlining comedian. But I went alone and that's probably why. I've heard a lot of bad things like having to wait in line for two hours just to get in.

Yeah you just have to wait a bit to get in (or at least get tickets to the show you want). If you have no bands you're interested in for a couple of hours then it might be worth going into the comedy tent. I wanted to see Jim Norton last year, but my schedule didn't allow for it.

Personally I like this message board because it's a one-stop shop for me. Everything I need to discuss about music festivals and other concerts in one easy-to-access place with a lot of pretty humorous people.

But everyone here is in agreement that the Bonnaroo message board basically blows. I don't think it's that bad myself. But it's slow moving, everyone's relatively boring, and not much really goes on that is worth reading.

Personally, I don't like the format of the Roo board and I like the people and little censorship on this one. And it's more fun for me to talk about Bonnaroo, and other Bonnaroo-ish things, with people who I actually know rather than with the people in the Roo board.

You guys just have a much better board, Dani, and I made this thread so any Roo talk could hopefully just be in here instead of cluttering the entire board. I think you guys should take it as a compliment that we wanna talk about Bonnaroo on the Coachella board rather than on the Roo board. :)

Patrick, our lists for Bonnaroo are very similar. I'm slightly more excited for NIN but that's decreased a little since the "It's not Lights in The Sky" thing really sunk it. I'll still see Trent (through dilated pupils:))

Also, The Slip is very underrated. I love that album like WHOA, then With Teeth and Year Zero are pretty much tied in my opinion. I need to give them more time though.

Tommy, have you never heard Future Sound of London?

chiapet
02-27-2009, 12:17 PM
These are just the LIVE acts I'd want to see (there's also a handful of well respected djs)

65 Days Of Static!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Buraka Som Sistema
dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip
Frightened Rabbit
Fujiya & Miyagi
Future Sound of London
Kraftwerk
Massive Attack
MGMT
Passion Pit
Squarepusher
The Beat

Plus i bet the massive amount of bands I've never heard of, hold some gems. I'd rethink my substance policy for this.

hawkingvsreeve
02-27-2009, 12:19 PM
So that festival has Massive Attack and.........a shit load of artists I've never heard of. Maybe I'm REALLY out of the loop, but I don't see much appealing other than Massive Attack.

....Kraftwerk?

Well it's the fucking future sound of london. Of course this is serious business.

I am honestly looking at my vacation calendar and trying to think of how I would explain to my mom that I'm missing her (milestone #'ed) birthday to go see bands.

mother of christ.... its the Isle of Wight fest.

everyone should watch the documentary they did on this festival in 1970. it is un-fcking-real. truely the last great human gathering.

I've heard OF The Future Sounds of London, but I'm not familiar with the music.

Really. It's a pretty cool show man. I urge you to reconsider.

I bet the visuals would be pretty cool. I've seen some video of their shows. I just really genuinely don't like the music. Trust me, I've tried. If they were at a festival I was at (I didn't go to Coachella last year) I'd consider checking them out.

Tommy, I knew NOTHING of kraftwerk before Coachella. I mean nothing. I never checked out videos, music, nothing. All I knew was what the Coachella website showed, and that was a picture of robots. So I was a little confused

ANYWAY, I simply wasnt prepared for how awesome their show turned out to be. Nothing like I've ever seen before. They have this really cool retro-futuristic look and feel that was just so much fun to experience. I happened to be on some pretty incredible drugs at the time too.

Fair enough. I'm not so crazy about the music on the records, but live is a different animal. It's a fun show.

I bet I'd have an enjoyable time at the show. If it's fun then I'm generally not real picky about the music. I don't like Manu Chao on record, but it was extremely fun in concert. I'd go into Kraftwerk with an open mind if I ever had a chance to see them. I said "No thank you" as far as the idea of traveling somewhere where they'd be one of the main draws. Though I will definitely give that festival props for Massive Attack.

phish is #1 for me. been listening to them for over 10 years now and never seen em...this is my one and only time, me thinks, so i'll be at both sets

#2 rodrigo y gabriella.....missed their stellar set at coachella, they were supposed to come to phx couple years back, one got sick so they cancelled, never been back or at any fest i've been at since that original coachella.

#3 beasties. only seen em once on Hello Nasty tour. gotta see em one more time before they retire completely.

#4 NIN - cause they rawk

#5 down - been a while since i saw them last and never seen em at a fest, and it'll be great to see how drunk phil is...

Beasties plz

Well, Im not sure actually. Thats the differenct between Bonnaroo and Coachella this year for me. Theres no definitive list of bands that im excited for like there is at Coachella. I really dont know who Im most excited for. I guess it may go something like

1. Beasties
2. NIN (close second)
3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs
4. Of Montreal/David Byrne (tied)
5. Snoop Dogg
6. Erykah Badu

I spent my evening trying to get a co-axle cable to work as an antenna on a tv without cable or satellite. That came after a lame attempt at playing a girls gone wild drinking game that we made up.
