As if anyone gives a shit, but for any Midwesterners, this isn't too bad. I'm definitely going to go, presale tomorrow morning at 11 am on iowatix.com. Only $40 for a 2-day pass with the presale, or $50 after May 1st. The festival is July 4th and 5th in Des Moines. Noteworthy bands:

The Flaming Lips (July 4th)
The Roots (July 5th)
Girl Talk (July 4th)
Drive-By Truckers (July 5th)
Yonder Mountain String Band (July 5th)

How can you lose with The Flaming Lips on the 4th of July? Never thought I'd say this, but nice work, Iowa.

The Flaming Lips on Independence Day sounds awesome, and to top it off, the Roots following them after.

Yeah, I'm genuinely excited about this little fest. They're supposed to add a few more nationally renowned acts later too. And STP had announced a show in Des Moines on the night of July 5th, but it's mysteriously absent from their tour website now... Anyway, I just got my presale ticket for both days, total came to only $46.40. That's a win in my book for the Lips on the 4th of July!

might want to mention the locations while you're at it... it's in Indiana.

JSam67

I don't know why Indiana just got mentioned. This is taking place in Des Moines, which is in Iowa. It's the state capital, in fact. Didn't figure I would have needed to clarify.

Also, there is an announcement coming on May 13th announcing some more bands. Jakob Dylan and Andrew Bird are among some bands being added.

JSam67

Probably some locals, and Beck...

there goes that vein in my neck threatening to pop again, Flips and Roots are good enough, i'm not expecting Mr.Hansen to grace Des Moines with his awesomeness

p.s.- FINALLY got the deluxe 2 cd Odelay, while its my least favorite Beck album, the second disk of b-sides are brutally good, i'm convinved he was hitting rocks when he made some of these

edit: The Flips and Beck ARE friends though....

JSam67
05-10-2008, 07:49 AM
I must say I do love Odelay, but part of that is my love affair with "Jack-Ass" and "The New Pollution." I don't expect these adds to be real big, so if we got somebody I was already a pretty big fan of, I'd be very surprised. Maybe Sean Penn, though...

So...80/35 added Black Francis today. It's so cool thinking I get to see both Frank Black and Kim Deal in the same year.

People are genuinely nice to each other here, it's shocking to a lot of people who have had years of cynical city living. And yeah, Lake Okoboji is definitely a 4th of July hot spot. However, this year it will be topped by Wayne Coyne and crew :)

Here's the schedule/map, recently released. I'm not sure how long bands are allowed to play but it's tantalizing to think about a 2 hour Flips set.

2 hours is barely enough time for them to scratch the surface

I wish they'd give an idea of when the last band of the day has to be done. I would guess relatively early since this all takes place in town (noise curfew similar to Lolla?) but since it's the 4th, I hope nothing applies. Flips from 9 pm until sunrise!

Lineup announcement this afternoon for the 2009 installment of 80/35. I know you guys are all on pins and needles!

Wheres the beef?
04-07-2009, 01:48 AM
I know you guys had a great time last year. Wonder what they will do this year.

JSam67
04-07-2009, 03:19 AM
Yeah, it was a blast last year. I think they're moving it to a slightly larger park and are expecting higher turnout this year, it was awfully successful last year.

My only guess right now is Explosions in the Sky, based on their July 2nd Chicago show. I really hope I'm right, they're so damn good.

I'm so curious, lineup was pretty damn good last year. It was so much fun!!

:( This is a really disappointing lineup. Skip and a half. Maybe I'll go see that EITS show in Chicago on the 2nd and party in Chicago for the 4th instead.

I just don't know why they went from a nice, indie lineup in '08 to a Rothbury-esque crapfest this year, but whatever. I think I now know how you felt when the Langerado lineup came out.

Well, the festival itself was a surprise last year, so who knew what the lineup would be? Of course the FLips were a nice surprise. And yeah, Iowa can be lame, but the music scene lately has not been. In the past 9 days, some of the bands to have played in Iowa City include Cloud Cult, GZA, Beach House, Mountain Goats, No Age, Cool Kids, The Hold Steady...

Well thats good that your getting to see better stuff now. I remember when I was there you were telling me how far you would have to go to see something decent. At least you not to far from chicago so you can pretty much catch any tour if you really want to. How was the attendance last year? Maybe they just didnt pull in enough loot to have as good of a line up.

JSam67

So Broken Social Scene, Man Man and Tilly & the Wall got added to this a couple weeks ago...

http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2009/04/8035-festival-adds-broken-social-scene-man-man-and.html

I'm trying to decide between this and seeing Explosions in the Sky in Chicago for the 4th of July weekend. Didn't want to go to this with the initial lineup but BSS changes things. Either way, good additions.

It is already starting to look like a bad lineup this year.

2008 lineup was top notch:
The Flaming Lips
Black Francis
The Roots
Andrew Bird
Yonder Mountain String Band
Drive-By Truckers
Cracker
colormusic
Jakob Dylan

2009 was ok (more watchable bands but of lower caliber):
Broken Social Scene
Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks
Public Enemy
Man Man
G. Love and Special Sauce
Brother Ali
Tilly and The Wall
Matisyahu
Maps & Atlases
Cymbals Eat Guitars
New Monsoon
Ben Harper and Relentless7

2010 so far:
Slightly Stoopid (ugh)

With that said it is a very nice laid back festival. Cheap food and I like that they only have microbrew from a local brewery. I'm hoping that the lineup gets better than Slightly Stoopid...
