UK boardies: are there specific venues on that five night Orbital run that I should make a particular effort to see a show there, or any of the five that I should avoid?

London, Royal Albert Hall sounds a blast. Only con is feels like a huge venue but only holds about 6K.

I always loved Leeds, O2 Academy, holds around 2,500. Close to the center of the city. Manchester Academy is about same size, nice venue close to the Student Union there. Liverpool is the pretty much the same vibe.Cambridge Corn Exchange is just as good as the rest.
The only one I'm not familiar with Glasgow.

If I would pick any it would be Royal Albert Hall because it is a pretty unique venue choice for Orbital. All the others are great too, but RAH it is.

Well it was a "fuck yeah" moment for myself because I had to sell my fly lo tickets at the door for the show in june, and book it to vegas for edc that night cause my ride ended up wanting to leave thursday night rather than friday morning. Was looking forward to a second chance so soon. Any coincidence that both fly lo and a-trak got canceled?

I mean, If you think it's worth it to sit outside for a few hours with an act that WILL be back soon. These first Echo shows can be pretty cool to see, and it doesn't hurt his case that he's playing with Unknown Mortal Orchestra at the show. I dunno, the wait seems a bit much to me, but if you dig his stuff enough and have the time, why not?

If you're going to tUnE-yArDs, you'd be much better off buying at the box office or Origami. There's no special deal, they're just trying to make it seem like a deal because it's less than forty bucks. Like somehow that's supposed to make it ok to add on a 50% service charge.

There are only three 2-for-1 deals on that list.

I was a bit underwhelmed by Roedelius' set at the Echo last night (this coming from someone whose mind was blown open by the Silver Qluster set at ATP). But Xambuca fucking SLAYED in the opening slot. The video stream was a big part of that - lots of video effects laid over stills from Tarkovsky's Stalker - but the music was also outstanding.

Anybody see Male Bonding last night? Put your hand down you fucking liar. I swear to god me and this one dude were the only ones there for the most part. It started off as the most awkward, embarrassing show I have ever been to. I found myself staring at the ground and avoiding eye contact.

It was at the Constellation Room @ Galaxy Theatre. Some other band was playing in the main room. This room was literally closed off by a heavy drape. No sound bleed issues from what I noticed.

They sounded great. I think theyre great. I will see them every single time they play. But maybe its literally just me.

WOO! What a night....1st time in my life, saw 3 concerts tonight!! Went to HARD and saw Japanese Popstars and Goose who put on an incredible set and said they would be back in America next year. Right after them, I hopped in a cab and went to the Wiltern and saw Matt Nathanson, solid set, enjoyable....show ended at 10:45pm, so I figured why not try to see what the scene is like at the Fonda for NERO, paid off a security guard to the sold out show and got in.... NERO were supposed to go on at midnight, but didnt end up going on till near 1:30am....but the show as INSANE. Very excellent, hoping the LIVE set comes to Coachella next year.

NERO were supposed to go on at midnight, but didnt end up going on till near 1:30am....but the show as INSANE. Very excellent, hoping the LIVE set comes to Coachella next year.

I am beat!

Solid triple dip! I like ur style. Making ur final LA days count I see.

Wow. i kind of forgot about MSI since they basically started releasing all of their stuff exclusively through Hot Topic. They probably have a bunch of stuff I haven't heard at this point. I've seen them 3 or 4 times - if they haven't lost their energy, they're fucking AMAZING live. I would be surprised if the sets are nearly as chaotic as they used to be though.

The Field were EXCELLENT. The live performance took the songs to a whole new level for me. The drummer was a beast. But then, one of the speakers cut out and they had to finish (what ended up being) their last song with just bass and drums. Not sure if that was going to be their last song anyway but I seriously would have been down for another hour +.

Really looking forward to seeing them again.

^ I'll second the praise for The Field last night, although I wonder if the cut out near the end was intentional? In any case, I'm loving the live band setup and also wish they would have played for a lot longer (I know the songs themselves are long and that they jam them out a bit, but I think they only played 4 or 5). They need to be at GroundhogChella this year, for sure (if only to make up for their cancellation in 2008).

By the way, did you stick around for Zomby rag and bone? My girlfriend was exhausted by the end of The Field so we didn't stay for his set.

MSI are amazing, I must say. Their work ethic as a band is insane and I don't even like their genre but I've ended up seeing them about 7 times over the years and every single time they bring an energy that is beyond admirable. The lead singer is ridiculous on stage but they are really friendly after all their shows. Hung out with them a couple times and they are all funny, normal people that are in on the joke. I would highly recommend checking them out for the odd crazy fun factor.. my 2 cents

So i have to talk about the Danzig Legacy show last night, and i hope bryan agress with me - it was INCREDIBLE! The band was extremely tight, Glen's voice sounds its best, and he was in a really jovial mood and interacted with the crowd a lot. They played a good selection of Danzig and Samhain stuff, and the Misfits material was played blisteringly fast. i could believe how fast "Bullet" sounded! It was loud as fuck, the absolute loudest i've ever heard the Gibson. Doyle still looks like a fucking monster on stage and was playing like a possessed beast. The enthusiasm and energy in the crowd was just at an extreme high, and I can't really express how special it felt to be screaming along the lyrics to "Halloween" with 6,000 people to Glen Danzig singing it on Halloween night. it was just such a great show. I really wish i was going to Fun Fun Fun Fest so i could watch it again!

I agree wholeheartedly. I saw Glenn a few years ago at the Greek doing a Halloween show with Doyle in tow, and it was SO bad. This was a complete 180. There were some weird sound problems (one of the guitarists was either continually doing the Zack Wylde bends and trills or he was cutting in and out at the start) and the sound REALLY fucked up at the end of Last Caress, but the fact that I get to even say that I saw the sound fuck up while the good half of the Misfits played Last Caress is something else. I thought the Danzig set was pretty damn good and the Samhain set was even better. The Misfits stuff was so awesome though, that 20 minute blast was worth the 40 bucks alone.

I'm bummed I didn't get to hang out with y'all beforehand, and I apologize if I was in complete space: I was feeling horrible most of the time (sinus infection), but Danzig really made it worthwhile, and hearing Bullet was absolutely killer.

The reason I don't think it was intentional was the looks/smirks they were all giving eachother after it happened. They seemed unsure of how exactly they were going to end it.

Then, afterwards, Goddollars was still having sound issues and sean was running back and forth between him and the soundboard trying to fix it.

I stayed for a few minutes of Zomby and it was pure awful. Laptop DJing showmanship at its worst. Not only did the music sound bad but he was entirely more concerned with the logistics of smoking his joint while keeping his Guy Fawkes mask on then the quality of the performance.

That's a good point about The Field, and I guess the electronic elements cutting out was a bit too abrupt for it to be planned. I guess I thought it may have been deliberate because the bass was still working, but whatevs - they made it work, and it was still an awesome set nonetheless.

I'm also glad we didn't stick around for Zomby if he was that terrible. I've also heard that his live shows aren't the best, so I don't feel too bad for not staying if all he was preoccupied with was smoking a joint.

Is Thundercat good live? I was thinking about going to that show at the Exchange LA.

Homage: Roy Ayers featuring Pete Rock, Thundercat & J.Rocc

Plus I thought Brandt Brauer Frick were very good at Moog Fest, if I wasn't doing another show that night I would be going to the Luckman show.

And I'm so glad about that Baths info posted earlier!

^ BBF is also playing at The Satellite on Thursday 11/10 if that works better for you, but I'm not sure what kind of set (live or DJ) they will be doing. I'd do both (I have a ticket for the Luckman show), but I have to work that night :/

What was the Moog Fest set like, by the way? Was it just the three of them, or did they have the whole ensemble with them? I'm curious if it will be much different than their Coachella set this year.

It was the 3 of them playing all in a row (no ensemble) but it was at the Ashville Music Hall which is a tiny place (think of a bar with a stage) but they had tremendous amounts of energy. It really worked in a small space. I'd stay it was about as big as the Satellite (maybe smaller).

It was so much better than I expected.

He did four songs and I was incredibly impressed. It seems like he had every instrument (including the mic) running through an effects center, because he would sometimes warp and distort the sound. I loved that.

I saw the 4-song set at Origami and was also impressed. 17 gave me chills.

Did you get in to the Echo later? I was at the end of the line and was the second to last person NOT to get a wristband to get a ticket. They told us to come back at 11:15pm and they MIGHT have a few more tickets available at that time...it was 9pm at the time. My friend and I left and came back and ended up getting in right as he was finishing the first song.

The sound inside of the echo for his set was 20x better than earlier in the record store. Waiting around and trying to get in and finally getting in and being in the back of the crowd was all worth it. I liked when he told a couple of back stories about a few of the songs. That's a talented and pretty cool kid.

They were great live. The whole lineup was very solid. Despot and Danny Brown were also very good. Alot of energy. Clever rhymes. My fave part was the entire show there was a dude that looked like partyboy from jackass in the back as "dj" but he did nothing but dance, smoke and drink w/ a big goofy smile on his face. then not till the end of das racists set he comes out and kills it on the mic for like 3 songs. everyone was like wtf. haha.

I've only seen him at EDC and he was okay.

I recently went to a street fair and Radio Disney was there and I heard his song "Hello" being played over the air through the Radio Disney Booth and they had all these teens helping little kids (toddlers and such) dance to it. After that I decided I couldn't hear that song ever again.

That sounds awesome. Go.

On a more helpful note, here's a recent review...

At the start of his new show, Hello Ladies, Stephen Merchant displays a photograph with which the Guardian illustrated The Office's triumph at the 2004 Golden Globes. His co-writer, Ricky Gervais, and others are in the foreground, but the 6ft 7in Merchant looms in the background, his head lopped off at the chin. As the less attention-seeking half of one of British comedy's most successful double acts, this is not the only time Merchant has been cut out of the limelight. But now he is claiming centre stage, with a first solo comedy tour since he launched as a standup in 1997.

Stephen MerchantHello LadiesThe Hexagon, ReadingAs an attempt to step out of Gervais's shadow – and Merchant classifies it as such in his opening remarks – it's a resounding success. There are Gervaisian touches here, in Merchant's mock-egotism – such as when, lacking a prop baby for a spoof play about teenage pregnancy, he nonchalantly produces one of his several Bafta awards, and uses that instead.

But this supposed arrogance is more attractive coming from Merchant, because it's offset by a blatant sense of his own ridiculousness. Pretend cockiness is just another symptom of the ineffectualness of a man whose name the newspapers get wrong and whose advances the opposite sex finds all too easy to resist.

Much of Hello Ladies is taken up with his unluckiness in love. Although, the more we learn about Merchant's pedantry and tight-fistedness, the less misfortune seems to blame. Decorously skirting chauvinism, he itemises the lengths men are unfairly made to go on first dates. Then he leers into a camera, and we're treated to giant footage of his lascivious sex-face. Not pretty. If Gervais has the biggest head in comedy, Merchant now establishes himself as the king of self-abasement.

Elsewhere, he stands tall – or at least, he makes jokes about doing so. Much as his forthcoming sitcom, Life's Too Short, mines stature for laughs, Merchant ruthlessly exploits his lankiness. There are gawky dumbshows of him stooping to enter rooms, and a very funny routine about being made to sit by the emergency exit on aeroplanes. In lesser hands gags about being lofty and sexually unsuccessful could seem hackneyed. But Merchant's joke-writing is of a high quality – trying to eject VHS porn as a panicky teenager is "like waiting for an old man to get out of the bath" – and his performance is priceless. He brilliantly pinpoints the absurdity of entrusting a passenger to open a plane's escape hatch by switching instantly from mortal terror to coolly efficient stewarding. Later, a bog-standard gag about text-message jargon transposed to real life is made hilarious by the tantalising delicacy with which Merchant's doctor delivers bad news.

The material won't all be new to standup fans; Merchant has been building up to this tour for years, and some gags we've heard before. But, in most instances, I'd happily watch him tell them time and again. More so than his illustrious partner, he can do funny just by being there. Ladies may spurn him, but standup fans should make a date.

Even though nobody really showed up until 10 you would have not been able to get in if you weren't on the rsvp list(which i think was pretty dam lame bc it wasnt really rsvp more like just a private list) My friends and I got there around 6 and they started letting people in around 8. The security guy didnt want to let us in for the longest time. But since no one was showing up he let us in with some other people because he knew we had been there a while. Saw a whole lot of people denied entrance which is dumb bc 1/3 of the people at the show were just off on the side sitting at tables talking while warpaint played.

I'm glad that, at least, one of you LA dopes went to that show. Holy shit, they were good at GAMH last night. I missed Sleater-Kinney when they were in their prime so this was my first time hearing Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss perform. They really jam...wow.

I like their new album quite a bit, but those songs sure do come alive in concert. If Wild Flag were formed in the early 90's, they would have been at the top of the heap. They are doing another show tonite and I think I might just go for another dose. They were that good.

Gauntlet Hair was good. The drummer uses a combination live/electronic drum set and it's a little frustrating at times where you want it to be louder but still good. The original singles were leaned upon heavily which I was happy about.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra was boring to me. Nothing particularly compelling yet I've never seen The Echo so packed. Strange.

I think so. The concierge told me it's open to the public and that I didn't need to RSVP but that it may be a good idea to do so anyway. She transferred me to WB but I just got a voice mail.

That just gets you priority service for the event. You don't have to actually be a hotel guest. The woman I spoke to didn't hesitate on that for a second, she just wasn't totally sure if you need to RSVP. Sounds similar to the Mondrian sessions, where an RSVP doesn't seem to mean very much if you aren't VIP.
