Are the Troubadour Cake shows still happening? I see Scenestar took them off the site.

Phantasma Del Mar
11-29-2010, 08:04 PM
Well the dates haven't been officially announced yet, but I don't see why CAKE would release them to their mailing list if they weren't happening. Nothing booked during those days on the Troubadour website so I guess they're just waiting.

Speaking of CAKE, John McCrea and Vince DiFiore are gonna be on Loveline tonight.

I'm leaning this way as well. the echoplex is nice but for some reason the troub is one of my favorite venues. The concept of seeing quasi on that stage is awesome. I've also only ever see Lou play on that stage.

jesus fucking christ grinderman was(were?) way more intense tonight than I even imagined (and I had pretty high expectations). The Warfield packs a punch when it comes to the sound, they fucking crank that shit up and we got right to the stage. Numerous times throughout the night Mr. Cave would come to us and he was no more than a couple feet away. At some point I thought he was going to actually jump down and I got a little startled but it didnt happen.

The band is crazy. I mean fucking schizophrenic gypsy looking bastards that bang on their instruments like it was their last show. Nick gives it 110% just flailing around exaggerating his facial expressions and generally being a fucking rock star.

The way he plays his guitar is unlike anything ive ever seen (i dont think), he makes it look so easy the way he was just banging and shredding but its all obviously extremely skilled and talented.

OK one last thing to wrap up this mushroom fueled rant, is I loved the way I was able to hear and understand everything he was singing. The fucking warfield is just pristine. during one really slow song the whole place was still as night, like you could hear a pin drop. we were putty in his hands

Was going to go see The Books tonite at the Fonda, but $26? Seems way too high for that. Oh well.It was a rather oddly-high ticket price, but it was worth it when I saw them and BHP. They were both worth $13 each, I'll put it that way. :)

highlights were When My Love Comes Down, Heathen Child and fucking Kitchenette....wow! i'd love for these guys to be on the polo fields next year so more people can be exposed to Mr. Cave's amazing storytelling skills.

That was the best Frames show I've ever seen (out of probably 7 or 8 shows) at Avalon tonight. The sound was absolute perfection. I went up to the sound guy (theirs, not house) and told him I've gone to an average of one show a week for the past five or six years, and that was one of the best sounding shows I've ever seen. They played for two and a half hours, including two new songs, which had kind of a country tinge to them. I'm excited to hear their new album whenever it comes out. Great mix of stuff over all their old albums, and Glen was his charming and talkative self as usual. Couldn't have asked for a better show.

Through a series of strange happenstances, I've actually seen The National far more times that I actually wanted to see The National, but I like them a lot more post-High Violet. I just didn't want to pay the ticket price they're askin', to see a band I only kinda like for like the 4th or 5th time.

Free ticket would have been just lovely though. Blah.

Arcade Fire on Sunday and Monday though, provided they can physically get here through the snow. I tried phrasing that a million different ways that wouldn't set up a lame Tunnels joke.

12-03-2010, 08:44 PM
Yeah, High Violet is the only National album I really dig. The mic-less/acoustic version of Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks is great live.

Fuck, I really want to see them again.

The Atlas Sound show tonight at the Echo was fucking great. Bradford played for about an hour, in addition to a twenty minute rant session before the first song of the encore because his left forearm was hurting.

The new songs sounded great, most notably "Here Comes the Train", the 11+ minute song at the end of the 2nd Bedroom Databank tape. The layers of sound he created during this song were just brilliant. He played my favorite 3 songs from Logos as well - Shelia, Criminals, and Walkabout.

During the encore rant he talked a lot about Neil Young, particularly On the Beach and Tonight's the Night. He started to play the song On the Beach, but realized he didn't know the whole thing and stopped. Which was a bummer, that would have been fantastic, and also fitting, he played harmonica on quite a few of the new songs, and much of the show prior had a Neil Young vibe to it.

I could have sworn he played a song from Microcastle, but after sifting through that album just now I guess not. But yeah, I'm so pumped I went tonight. Great, great show.

So he's sticking with the acoustic/harmonica set up for the shows? I enjoy that, but the best Atlas Sound set I've seen was him with a loop pedal and an electric guitar, playing stuff from his first album. Glad the show was good though.

Liars were really fun tonight. They played a good mix from the last three albums, but didn't delve into any They Were Wrong tracks. They did The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack, so I was happy.

Zappa plays Zappa was amazing. There would be parts where they would show Frank Zappa on a projection screen and it would be like he was there. For example remember in Baby Snakes where he threw a roll of toliet paper.Well when he threw it someone stage from behind the drummer threw a roll of toliet paper into the crowd.I got caught a pick, got autographs and it was almost a three hour show. It was also kinda neat to meet so many Frank Zappa fans that were 50+ years old telling me that they saw Frank Zappa 25+ times and etc.

He kind of looked like he'd lost a tooth or something, but a friend of mine has attested to his welfare since, so all is well. They were the best I've ever seen them, even though that was one of the biggest venues I've seen them play. Which was both unexpected, and awesome. Looking forward to tomorrow, although I'll be a lot further back this time, I'm volunteering with PIH.

Vampire Weekend are a really poor choice of support band though, I mean musically I think I can see the idea, but in terms of the crowd they draw, it resulted in being surrounded by a load of incessantly squealing fangirls and feeling a million years old all of a sudden.

So the Alice Coltrane tribute at UCLA was pretty awesome. Kyp Malone and Neils Cline in what was billed as a "world exclusive" pairing, both guys also compiled a big jam group and performed a song each.

FlyLo did a tribute to his great aunt w/ an amazing performance complete w/ harp player, violinist, piano player while images of a home video they took while on vacation to India played in the background and Alice Coltrane's spoken word was layered over the music.

The special surprise guest was Alice's daughter Michelle along w/ a bunch of musicians performing "A Love Supreme" to close the show.
