ahhhh you didn't get yours, Boourns? I thought this was discussed way back when! I'm sure you'll find something for floor. I'm thinking about this Pomona show too but that would mean 2 nights in a row of driving far and coming home late and going to work the next day hating life. Think I'm just sticking with the show on the 7th.

Sunn O))) were fucking monstrous tonight. Oren Ambarchi played Trombone, Attila was a tree creature and a monk, he did some Tuvan throat singing and they played songs I recognized. I don't know any of the titles, but it was really kick ass. It was odd though, there was a super drunk couple who pushed to the front and, at one point, the chick grabbed Attila's dick through the robe.

how did he respond?

i don't know what to think of that guy... i ran into him when they were recording Monoliths and Dimensions and he was super trashed and giggling like a mad man rambling on about cooking tv. then owen pallett posted pictures of him and attila on a boat the other day...

bmack86
08-11-2009, 10:48 PM
hahahahahahaha.

He didn't respond. He was in character, and I think when he gets in character, he gets all the way in. It was pretty amazing. The tree spirit outfit and songs accompanying it were amazing.

I'm fairly certain they did Orthodox Caveman.

wmgaretjax
08-11-2009, 10:50 PM
Yeah, they definitely played that when we saw them.

My favorite part was when Attila left and I thought that they were winding down... Then he came back on stage in the new get up... I'd seen him in it before, but not in such a dramatic fashion. Fucking awesome.

08-11-2009, 10:58 PM
Yeah, I thought when he walked off that that was going to be it, but then BAM, tree man.

And they two or three false stops in the last song, only to have Attila scream like a banshee and start it over again.

This part literally terrified me. I hope Jared didn't notice, but I probably jumped a little.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, they began the set with Aghartha from the new album.

bmack86
08-12-2009, 12:27 AM
Not for us. At our show, the first song was a track with just Oren, Greg and Stephen. They did Agarttha second, then I think they did Hunting and Gathering, then Orthodox Caveman, and then one or two more songs.

Really really great show, I'm so glad I went. Especially since the venue probably held about 200 people, and is an old spanish library. Really cool place, and I can't wait to see Deerhunter there.

I tried listening to one of The Knife's songs and it just wasn't my style and I gave up after that and therefore I've never given Fever Ray a chance either, but due to the fact that Fever Ray gets a lot of praise on this message board and because they're playing in pomona, I might actually go to that show. So, anyone have any reccomendations on what I should listen to? Albums or specific songs?

did anyone that put in for Tenacious D tickets at the Largo receive a confirmation yet? I hate how you have to leave all your information on a message. I always feel im going to forget something or a number wont be clear on the other end.

I put in for mine Monday morning, haven't heard back yet. I called today and they changed the intro message. D tickets are still on sale. I sorta wanted to call and order another pair but I dunno if my original attempt work.

I got excited a few minutes ago seeing as Largo charged my Visa, but turns out those were from the Travis tickets I bought 2 weeks ago

just got the confirmation call from largo. keep hope alive. keep hope alive.

The Fever Ray visual show isn't nearly as epic as that of The Knife though, right?

The stuff I've seen is much more understated and less dazzling than the Knife but it seems to work fine for me. It's a stage lit by a bunch of antique lamps that glow in sequence and bright lasers that cut across the stage and audience in geometric patterns. It looks hypnotic.

None of you care, but there is a discrepancy in the listings for Deadmau5's Seattle show. The venue's site has him playing the Showbox Market on October 4th and Deadmau5's site has him at the Showbox SoDo on October 3rd (which is where and when I thought). It matters cuz its the difference between a show on a Saturday that I could go to or a show on a Sunday that I really shouldn't/can't go to.

Just wait for Feist at sunset at Coachella 2010. That will be legendary.

The last time I saw her was at the SF Fillmore and she asked for a volunteer pianist to come onstage and play a ditty. Some random girl came up there and played an amazing classical song that completely blew everyone away...Feist was speechless and the crowd totally erupted.

The show was great. It was kind of funny since my wife and I were there at the Fillmore the night before to see VNV Nation...talk about juxtaposition of music and crowds.

Did anyone see Buddy Guy/Dr. John/James Cotton last night at the Bowl?

another fantastic show. All three were excellent. Buddy Guy absolutely destroyed. I wish he played longer than an hour, damn those noise curfews. that hour he played though was truly amazing. He's a great show man, very funny, entertaining and soulful. He spent a good 10-15 minutes on a guitar solo walking around the boxes at the bowl. And his near 20 minute "Hoochie Coochie Man" to open the show was epic. If you get a chance, don't pass Buddy Guy up. I know Coachella doesn't book blues acts, but he would literally make all the hipster's heads spin around

If the Perez Hilton tour bombs, would it somehow bankrupt him and take him off of the Internet? Because if that happens, I will be very much in favor of this tour bombing like no other in the history of music.

MWvG9L1jqq0

I saw him maybe 5 years ago opening for Los Lobos and he totally kicked their asses. A really great show. "Damn Right I've Got the Blues" was the highlight for me.

2 Sweet Shows Next week (that I am allowed into regardless of my young age):

Al Qaeda collaborating with Mike Watt (Minutemen, etc.), Rob Crow (Pinback, etc.), and Gabe Serbian (The Locust, etc.) at the Che Cafe on Wednesday, 8/19.
They are a ambient/space/drone group from San Francisco that has been making some really good stuff recently, and they are currently touring with Mike Watt. I am mainly just going to see Watt and the rest perform in such an intimate space, though, but I love their stuff as well. Should be really cool.

And

Jay Reatard at M-Theory Records on Thursday, 8/20.
I'm loving his new record, have yet to see him live, should be crazy good fun in a tiny little record store. Things will be broken.

I've got a story for y'all.
I went to Spaceland tonight to see Signals, the new project from the three guys that used to be in Mae Shi and got kicked out (that's what happened, and apparently none of them saw it coming. From their own mouths, and they were so sad that they were kicked out of a band that they loved that much) Signals was awesome. They take the sound of Hlllyh and make it a little more hard-edged. They apparently wrote most of the songs they played tonight a mere week ago, so i've got high hopes for them. They're going to be at FYF Fest, so check them out. Great guys, great live show, and they'll be every bit as awesome as when they were with Mae Shi.

Protect Me were next. That's the new project of a few of the guys from Ima Fucking Gymnast. For anyone who knew that band, they've grown up quite a bit in the ensuing years since they last played together. They used to be a cookie cutter indie punk band, but they're taking steps away from that now. I heard some Screamers in the new songs, some really awesome bass lines, and a lot more pop influence than they had a year ago. Less screaming, more singing, and some really fantastic skewed melodies. They have a long way to go before they become amazing, but they were very solidly good.

Shellshag were supposed to headline, but for some reason they played second to last tonight. They are a two piece from Brooklyn, and they put on a very fun show. As Bill from Signals said, they're like Beat Happening if they wanted to be a real rock band rather than a twee act. The dude played guitar, she played drums, they both sang and it was a raucous good time. They did a Wipers cover, they thrashed about with huge smiles, the guitar player beat on his instrument with drum sticks and general insanity. They were fantastic and I expected them to be my surprise favorite act of the night.

But for Screaming Females. The reviews I'd read of them suggested that they were disciples of Sleater Kinney and the Pixies. Bullshit. The only bands I could think of as comparisons were The White Stripes, The Kills, Led Zeppelin and The Stones. As soon as they took the stage, they started ripping. The lead singer/guitar player, Marissa, is a 5 foot tall cute chick who was wearing an old maid's dress tonight. From all appearances, you'd expect twee. Instead, she came out, sang in a dominating voice that lapsed occasionally into a breathtaking scream, and she played her guitar like it was an extension of her arm. The band was airtight, the songs were beyond amazing and the performance was brilliant. I had a huge smile on my face during the whole set, and afterwards I was so in love that I literally bought everything they had for sale. I gave them 70 bucks for everything, because they were worth every penny. They opened for Dead Weather on their last tour, and, based on the amazing show I saw, they're not going to be a tiny band for much longer. I've never seen a band that more deserves fame and attention, and they're going to get it. Bands this good don't stay unnoticed for long. Attention Bay Area people: They're in your neck of the woods tomorrow. See them and thank me. They are astounding, and the best show I've seen in years.

I'm currently on an airport computer in Göteborg, Sweden. I've been sick all weekend and feel like total shit right now. However, I managed to work through this terrible cold for the past two days and had a blast at the Way Out West festival. The last minute planning made this a bit expensive and may have cost me some fall shows, but it was well worth it.

Vivian Girls, Calexico, Dead Prez, Band of Horses, Basement Jaxx, Beirut, Grizzly Bear, Royksopp, and Amadou & Mariam were all so damn good.

Bon Iver doing 'Skinny Love' was beautiful and very memorable.
MBV - talk about some weak ass putos. Holocaust only lasted 14 minutes.
There was a pit for Vampire Weekend.
Wilco were solid. I need to give these guys another chance on record.
Teddybears fans went fucking nuts and they performed a lot of their STHLM material - great way to end the festival.
I saw Arctic Monkeys over Fever Ray. Game time decision, but Arctic Monkeys are definitely one of the best rock bands to come out of this decade - no doubt about it. The new album should be great.

I was shut out of Andrew Bird and Echo and the Bunnymen's after shows, but I got to experience Monotonix. :)
I wanted to see Final Fantasy on Saturday night, but a long wait in the pouring rain with this cold wasn't going to happen. Again, though, Teddybears was enough for me.

Oh, and the highlight of the weekend was Antony and the Johnsons. It wasn't really a big draw for me, but then I found out he was performing with the Göteborg symphony orchestra. Stunning. He was a bit nervous at first, but all of a sudden he and the orchestra clicked. The Crying Light is going to get some serious listens from me now. And of course, the cover of 'Crazy in Love' was magnificent.

Yep.

the Palladium is open on Saturday mornings from 10am-2pm and you can buy tix for Wiltern/Palladium/Avalon/Verizon (Irvine)/San Manuel (San Bernardino) with no service fees.

the 2nd TMV date would have been added if the first one sold really fast, but apparently that hasn't happened yet.

I got there for Wilco at around 5:30 for doors at 7 and there were like 15 people in front of me in line.

But the whole situation is kinda fucked. They let people line up, then around an hour before doors they let EVERYONE into the adjacent bar, and you get a special orange early entry ticket when you buy a drink. And then the smart ones lined up again outside instead of just sitting around in the bar and drinking. But yeah, not the best or most logical setup.

it's only been open a couple of months and have had less than a dozen shows, i'm sure this will change as logistics get worked out. Hell, even the El Rey up until about a year ago had lines on both sides of the venue. Now they try to line up 3 separate lines and it's a clusterfuck when you get about halfway back because no one knows the difference between holding a ticket and Will Call.

Seriously. The El Rey needs to get their line shit together. Here's an idea...let people pick up will call and day-of tickets before the doors open so everyone can just form one line. It's total bullshit if you are the first one to arrive and are the 101st person inside because they let all the other lines in before yours, which almost happened to me before I beat the system.

The crowd at Sasquatch was actually really awesome this year, so that made me happy. That sucks about that guy screaming though. I assume you are talking about "Educate Thy Neighbour." That song has a lot of history around it, so Eugene was probably telling a story and a guy pulls a dick move like that? Lame.

The bolded part is truth though. I plan on seeing as many Gogol Bordello shows as I possibly can, but I do this knowing that no matter what I will never see a show better than their set in the Mojave in 2007.

The Troubadour calendar allows you to go back about 2 years. there were some f-in AMAZING shows that happened there, some of them weren't even sold out! Like The National (2 nights), Vampire Weekend playing a $5 ASCAP show (not my thing, but apparently they were all the rage about a year ago...), Grizzly Bear before they got huge, etc.

Of bands that went on to play much bigger venues, I think my fave shows there were (non "secret"/non-KROQ) Hot Chip, The Killers and The Airborne Toxic Event.

I just wonder when its going to hit them like a ton of bricks...playing as many shows as they do...with that much intensity can't be healthy...

Eugene is just a workaholic. He is just one of those people who constantly have to be working on a project on all time. Like Mike Patton for example.

Also, my upcomming shows schedule is getting rediculous. I cannot afford all these shows I am going to, yet, I am going to them anyways.

I'm not leaving for the Lips show for another hour, hopefully traffic doesn't suck ass. It starts at 7, right? and two openers, so worst comes to worst I'll probably only miss White Dwarves.

Im just going to post my upcomming shows so I can reference this list... I keep forgetting who I am actually seeing.

08/22 - The Specials (aka. V Fest)
08/24 - Monotonix
08/28-30 - Rock En Seine
09/20 - Monotonix
09/24 - Holy Fuck (my b-day!)
09/25 - Pearl Jam
10/09 - Gogol Bordello
10/10 - Gogol Bordello
10/12 - Butthole Sufers
10/20 - A Place To Bury Strangers
11/13 - The Pixies

I also want to hit up The Horrors, Motorhead, Grizzly Bear and Flogging Molly... but I don't think any of those will be happening.

Also, Im seeing 5 bands I never thought I would ever see in the next fews months. This is a monumental period of concert going for me. Faith No More, Madness, The Specials, The Butthole Surfers and The Pixies. Wow. As well as Pearl Jam, one of my most elusive live bands. Im going to be broke due to all of this, but I know it will be worth it.

If there is a demand for them and they can physically do it why would they need to stop touring?

so they don't get ridiculously overexposed???

there would be more demand if they went away for a year or more. and put out some new music before announcing another tour.

So I saw Ghostland Observatory and Flaming Lips at the Greek tonight.

To anyone that has ever said Ghostland is worth watching live: how do you possibly excuse that guy's vocals? How? Have you no decency?

The Flaming Lips have a very cute little show. At least four of the songs were legitimately fucking AWESOME, although in every instance Wayne's vocals had been rendered irrelevant due to the sound mix which was terrible on his mic, but after hearing him struggle to hit a lot of those notes I found this to be kind of a plus. Nice spectacle. Frankly by the far the best part of the show was dying laughing thinking about a sketch wherein there's just one guy at a concert who's spiking the balloons directly into the back of the heads in front of him.

Four or five totally fucking rocking tunes. Wayne was really disappointed in the crowd, which was sparse and all quite old. I saw more dudes wearing seeing glasses there that at any other concerts ever.
