I was away this weekend and when I got back I was very bummed by this news. Tony Wilson, aka the founder of Factory Records died Friday. Mr. Wilson was partly responsible for a tons of great music coming out of Mad-chester for a number of years, dating all the way back to his local TV music show, So It Goes.

For a short-lived regional music show, Tony Wilson's So It Goes had quite a legacy. While the BBC was still wheeling out the Old Grey Whistle Test, Wilson was giving TV debuts to the Sex Pistols and a host of others.

Seeing Tony at this year's Coachella (introducing Happy Mondays) was a surreal highlight for me, chalk up another magic moment to the best festival on the planet.

He will be remembered for many things, not just a short lived TV show, Factory Records, Madchester, The Hacienda, The Happy Mondays, New Order, and Joy Division, just to name a few. Tony Wilson made a significant contribution to my life. His whole attitude was inspirational to me, he was responsible for opening my ears and eyes to some of the enduring musical passions of my lifetime.

I made a Tony Wilson/Manchester inspired mix today and listening to it reminded me how great and infamous, Factory Records was. His enthusiasm, attitude, zeal, and musical taste will be sorely missed.

Anthony H. Wilson, 1950-2007
