I literally live right off the Pima Canyon trailhead, I just walk around the corner from our house and I'm in South Mountain park, so I may be able to meet up for this hiking excursion, It depends what we have going on this weekend, keep this thread updated with departure times, etc. Thanks.

we'll meet for a hike around 9-9:30. i'll text people and post here when we're leaving. faxy, where is the lot for those trails? off baseline and 46th street? at the end of 46th street?

faxman75

Exactly.

Go south on 46th St. from Baseline. You will run into it. It's pretty much across the street from where I live. There is a stoplight at 46th st so you won't miss it. The lot and trailheads are where the street ends and the mountains begin.

I.F.A.
02-03-2012, 10:03 AM
Yes, I have a man. He lives in San Diego, but he's here a couple of times a month. He'll be at rock band.

Though, my absence from the board is more related to general hermitude. I've been in a serious funk lately and just haven't been feeling particularly social.

But, *big news* I've given notice at my job, which I think has been contributing drastically to said funk, and I think that will help me feel a LOT better (I'm taking a short sabbatical and going back to school). My last day is 4/11, so I'll be celebrating at Coachella - and, I'm sure I'll just be around more in general. :)

Remember the Heart Attack Grill (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/46399779/ns/health-heart_health/)? It moved to Vegas.

LAS VEGAS — Laughing tourists were either cynical or confused about whether a man was really suffering a medical episode amid the "doctor," "nurses" and health warnings at the Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas, a restaurant owner said Wednesday.

"It was no joke," said Jon Basso, who promotes himself "Doctor Jon," his scantily-clad waitresses as nurses and customers as patients.

Basso said he could tell right away the man in his 40s eating a Triple Bypass burger was having trouble. He was sweating, shaking and could barely talk.

Paramedics were called Saturday night, fire spokesman Tim Szymanski said, and the man was hospitalized. His name and information about his condition weren't made public.

Giggles can be heard on the soundtrack of amateur video showing the man on a stretcher being wheeled out of the restaurant where patrons pass an antique ambulance at the door and a sign: "Caution! This establishment is bad for your health."

Eaters are given surgical gowns as they choose from a calorically extravagant menu offering "Bypass" burgers, "Flatliner" fries, buttermilk shakes and free meals to folks over 350 pounds.

Basso said he hopes the man is OK, and added that he felt bad for him because tourists treated his misfortune like a joke.

"We would never pull a stunt like that," he said.

M Sparks
02-22-2012, 11:09 AM
I'm probably voting for Romney, because I'm getting nervous. I think Obama can beat any of these people, but just in case there is some crazy turn of events, I don't want the risk of Santorum being on that ticket.

I argued with Faxy about that, why I felt Romney was better than Santorum, and I've also had "Who's worse, Newt or Santorum" arguments as well. I just kind of feel like as long as Romney keeps getting richer, and people like me keep getting poorer, that's all he cares about. I'd rather be poor and have my freedoms.

I recently registered with the Green party.

I'm all moved in now. I love the new place and the area thus far. I moved in Friday night and went over to Bikini with some of the my helpers and we all had a good time. The next day we walked the mile down Roosevelt to the light rail and took that to the beer festival at Indian School Park. After we had a delicious meal at Pita Jungle and finally made our way back to Bikini for more drinks. We were all pretty tired by midnight so we made it back to my place and ordered a pizza from Z Pizza. Pretty tasty pizza but a little pricey. It was about $25 for 8 decent slices of a one topping. Anyway, i've been unpacking and purchasing things for the apartment since Sunday. It's nice and roomy but I have a lot of stuff that's filling it out quite nicely.

Kooky Krafts is a pretty far out shop. It looks like a lot of birthday cakes from the window but inside you will find many oddities and crafts made out of doll heads and what nots. I have a lot more exploring to do but the apartment seems to be filling up a bit. By the end of next month it might be almost half full. I hope to have a housewarming gathering but I suck at making those sorts of things happen so we will see. If anyone hits up any shows at Trunk Space or goes for drinks at Bikini hit me up. My living room has plenty of seating and I usually have booze on hand for some pre outing drinks.

I also vote in the Republican primary -- you see it as ironic, I see it as strategic. I always vote for the most moderate candidate running so that the power that be get the message. See how much good that's done.

If I vote Tuesday it'll be for Romney for precisely the reasons the rest of the field says I shouldn't.

If I was voting in this primary I would vote for Ron Paul. He isn't going to get anywhere nationally with his racist thoughts and even in the state of Texas he hasn't tried to pass anything racist. The pro life thing is probably not going to matter either. The others have far more dangerous platforms from what I can tell so voting for a fake libertarian would be better than voting for either of the other two. It's just a field of bozos.

02-22-2012, 11:27 AM

Tom, you're right and my plan was to register Republican to vote Tuesday but I did my affiliation selection when I updated my address and didn't put any thought into it other than who I would be voting for in the general.

chairmenmeow47
02-22-2012, 11:44 AM
i believe i am independent. i don't bother registering republican to vote in the primaries. i don't ever want republican on my "record". i don't wish to show any support for the party, even if it would help select a less-evil overlord. i have trouble viewing the system as something to be tampered with as opposed to giving my honest opinion. it's not a bad strategy; it just goes against my views on voting. and it's not to say i'd never vote for a republican in the november election if i found one i liked.

i also secretly root for ron paul since he's such an outcast, but i myself would never vote for him. pro-life is a major deal breaker for me. i also find his ideas to be slightly archaic; specifically the focus on states rights. while i'm all for fixing our financial mess and putting a halt to policing the world, it's pointless if no one else is playing the game with him. hopefully more people will think more like him in the future; i just don't think we're there yet.

So, I'm doing the 4 Hour Body diet, so to speak. I don't know if it really has a name, and I haven't read the whole book yet, but the whole diet chapter is online for some reason. Down 4+ pounds in 4 days. (I had spent the previous 6 weeks working out an hour a day and gained 3 pounds.) We'll see how easy it is to stick to long term, but I'm doing well so far, and it's inexpensive.

Anyway, part of the plan is you only do it six days a week. You are supposed to eat whatever you want the 7th day. It makes it easier not to cheat if you know you can have whatever you are craving on the weekend, and the caloric spike is supposed to keep your metabolism from shutting down. My day is Saturday, so that means beer on Saturdays only, but I guess I can drink red wine on Fridays.

But really what I came here to ask is if there is anything going on this weekend. If it's my first "cheat day", I think it would be pretty pathetic sitting at home gorging on pizza and beer alone. Anyone want to go eat something terrible for us?

If you want to drink beer, there are a couple things going on. Kiltfest at Cityscape; which is some kind of celebration of Four Peaks Kiltlifter, $5 to get in. And then there is a beer fest at Papago Brewery for $20.

Apparently, that's the entire chapter from the book, although it refers to many other chapters. If this goes well for a few weeks, I will pick up the book (which is probably the strategy of allowing it online.) I've heard it's an interesting read...the guy has a bit of a mad scientist streak, like implanting a glucose meter for real time results. Also, apparently a good chunk of it is about tantric sex or something.

4 days down. Immediate results are encouraging, and I've lost enough that there's no way I can put it back on in one day on Saturday. I'm exercising 30-45 minutes a day (I was doing 60-90 minutes and getting nowhere.)

02-28-2012, 10:25 AM
Yeah that's what I was complaining about last week. I feel like if I vote for Romney or Santorum my vote would count, but if I vote for Paul, my vote would be thrown away. I might vote this afternoon.

faxman75
02-28-2012, 10:46 AM
A vote is participation in a process in my opinion. No matter who you chose it's not "thrown away". I know many disagree with that though. I've been told i'm throwing away my vote in November by voting Green party. With that logic argue that voting for the status quo is also throwing it away.

Would any of you all be interested in doing a Hikenbrunch east side? Maybe hike somewhere in the Superstitions at 8ish then head over to my place for crepes 11ish? I'm thinking either Sunday March 25th or April fools Sunday.

Nice hanging out with you Friday night, Mark. Enjoyed your new digs! When we were at the Crescent, did you have a mixed drink? If so, were you ill at all on Saturday? It occurred to me yesterday that the two times I've gotten the stomach flu in the last month both followed a night of having at least 1 mixed drink at the Crescent. That seems like too much of a coincidence to merely be a coincidence.

It was nice having you guys over on Friday. I did not have any mixed drinks but I did seem to have a bit of a stomach issue on Saturday now that you mention it. It seemed to last less than a day but I chalked it up to just drinking beer for about 7 hours. Makes me wonder though..

Hey, I am going to wind up with an extra weekend 1 car camp pass. I have one on the way that was supposed to go to someone in our camp group, but they've dropped out. We'd like a 6th car to round out the space... it would be easiest to give it to someone in Phoenix because we need to switch the matching wristband before we get there. Also, 4 out of 5 of our cars are coming from Phoenix. It's a free pass. If there's anyone who isn't sure where they are staying or wants to save the hotel money, talk to me. The pass is free, you just have to meet us in Indio Thursday afternoon. No lurkers, unless someone vouches for you. PM me for details.

Saw that on the news this morning. Sounds like a good idea -- disenfranchise a significant portion of the voters in your state who would want to vote for Obama to appease one single person's moronic query.

Yeah I saw something about that on Facebook. I realize that Obama probably won't win in this state, but WHAT THE FUCK.

Yeah, well, I think your distaste here is misplaced. Guy is secretary of state -- it's his job to verify a candidate's eligibility. I'm sure he's checking on the state of birth for Romney too, as well as whether or not his dad married his own sister. I am also sure that the sentence "Bennett, a Republican, said he could not recall the name of the constituent who made the request" is 100% true.

http://www.ecollegetimes.com/student-life/bar-smith-owners-relentless-beats-to-broaden-edm-scene-with-monarch-theatre-1.2740205

The rise of a new nightlife venue in downtown Phoenix has the potential to bring new life and culture into the heart of the city. At least that is what the owners of the newly opened Monarch Theatre are hoping for as they prepare for a grand opening on Memorial Day weekend.

Owners Pete Salaz, Sean Badger and Edson Madrigal, who also collectively own and run the popular indie dance club Bar Smith had their eyes on the space next door for quite some time. When the location for the now shuttered PHX nightclub became available, Badger said the guys jumped at the opportunity.

“Bar Smith itself is different from everywhere else in town,” Badger said. “We don’t really do a lot of commercial music. We cater to a niche market and try to keep the music and entertainment as original as we can, so we’re just expanding that theory next door.”

The difference, Badger adds, is space and the capacity to host bigger, world-class entertainers. The music driven venue will host a mixture of DJs and live acts, and serve as a hybrid of a concert venue and nightclub.

With a state-of-the-art sound system, a capacity of 500 and nearly 7,000 square feet of dance floor, Badger said he hopes are that The Monarch becomes a destination venue for Downtown Phoenix.

“We want worldly people, people who are more cosmopolitan in nature from all walks of life, whether their professional or artists,” Badger said. “We want people who are music enthusiast.”

That’s is why the owners enlisted the help of Relentless Beats owner and operator, Thomas Turner, who has been running the electronic dance music promotion company for 16 years in the Southwest. Here in the Valley, Relentless Beats is responsible for Giant Wednesdays and Sound Kitchen at Wild Knight in Scottsdale.

“We are extremely excited,” Turner said. “We both have a long history of supporting dance music in the community, and I couldn’t be more thrilled that they got their hands on this room and that they reached out to me.”

On Saturday nights, Relentless Beats will usher in a steady flow of electronic music talent. The music, Turner said, will consist of forward-thinking electronica and cultured acts.

In previous years, the Scottsdale nightlife scene has dominated the EDM culture, but, according to Turner, Scottsdale has some perceived barriers and excludes many from being exposed to it. With the help of the Monarch, Relentless Beats will be able to expand Phoenix’s musical palate.

“Those that come to Monarch will be there for the music as opposed to bar hopping,” Turner said “These are going to be people looking for a music experience and they’re going to get that there.”

The owners are working to build a Latin night, planned for Fridays, which will feature smaller, touring Latin artists.

“We’re really enthusiastic about good Latin music and presenting entertainment that is appropriate for Arizona,” Badger said.

Although the venue has been open every weekend since late April for staff training, the Monarch Theatre is still undergoing renovations in preparation for its grand opening night on May 26.

Turner has lined up Grammy nominated Nadia Ali, who is one the most recognizable female vocalists in the electronic music industry.

“I’m hoping we make a huge impact on Arizona and downtown Phoenix’s music scene,” Badger said. “I really want to see Phoenix become the city that should be and not just the town that it’s known as, and I think that we could definitely help get it there by presenting world-class entertainment.”

I don't have a problem with the Bennett thing. He was doing his job. He's one of 49 people who have a legitimate reason to ask for that paperwork. And he wasn't trying to make a thing about it, the media dug it up to make up a fake story.

Does anyone care about politics in this thread? Your state has gone crazy again.

http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/arizona-regulators-undermine-their-res-kick-off-fight-for-solar/

Arizona’s regulatory commission, once a champion of solar in the state, has officially declared a municipal solid-waste-to-biogas project to be an acceptable replacement for solar. It is a signal that the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC), until the last election a bastion of bipartisan support for renewables, is shifting.

Arizona’s Renewable Energy Standard (RES) requires ACC-regulated utilities and electric co-ops, which include Arizona Public Service (APS), Tucson Electric Power (TEP) and Mohave Electric Co-operative (MEC), to obtain fifteen percent of their power from renewable sources by 2025. It also specifies that 30 percent of the fifteen percent come from distributed generation (DG).

That RES was instituted by the ACC, which independently regulates electricity for the state, before the five-person commission was reconstituted along more conservative lines in the November 2010 election.

In July 2011, the ACC voted, three Republicans to two Democrats, to allow MEC a waiver to substitute a 13-megawatt trash-to-gas power plant for part of its RES obligation. The waiver passed despite the fact that when the renewables standard was originally set, in 2007, it specifically ruled trash-to-gas as too polluting an electricity source to be a substitute for renewables.

This week, after an administrative law judge turned back a legal challenge to the decision, the ACC’s three-Republican majority finalized the waiver to MEC for the plant. The two Democrats once again opposed.

Reclamation Power Group LLC, which will own and operate the plant, is co-owned by Ron Blendu, an Idaho resident and brother of former Arizona Republican legislator Robert Blendu, who testified in favor of the project before the ACC.

Mohave Electric CEO Tyler Carlson argued that the trash-to-gas power plant could reduce costs to ratepayers by saving some of what the utility spends on solar.

But “the trash-burner costs almost twice as much to build and twenty times more to run,” Democratic Commissioner Paul Newman told GTM, questioning the Republican commissioners’ approval of the project. “How is that conservative?”

Newman’s argument is substantiated by numbers from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the statistics keeper for the U.S. Department of Energy, which put the capital cost to build a municipal solid waste plant at $8,232 per kilowatt and the cost for operations and maintenance (O&M) of it at about $380 per megawatt-hour. A comparably sized photovoltaic (PV) plant, EIA numbers showed, would be $4,755 per kilowatt to build, with O&M at less than $17 per megawatt-hour.

“The trash burner project,” Newman said, “will use no more than 40 percent to 75 percent renewable waste resources, far from its builders’ claims of 90 percent, because that is the composition of municipal solid waste.” And, he added, “burning plastics will spew toxins like dioxins and furans into the Phoenix air, which is already the second-dirtiest in the country.”

The Grand Canyon Chapter of Arizona’s Sierra Club fought the project from its inception. Its legal appeal of the first ACC decision delayed construction of the plant. The appeal argued the technology is too polluting and was specifically rejected by the ACC in 2007 when it defined the renewable energies to be used to implement the RES. The administrative law judge’s ruling rejected the appeal and ended that delay.

“When Suntech decided to come to Arizona with a manufacturing facility,” Sierra Club Grand Canyon Chapter Director Sandy Bahr told GTM, referring to the manufacturing facility and corporate offices established near Phoenix by China’s biggest solar company, “the Renewable Energy Standard was one of the key reasons because it provides certainty and stability. Undermining it is a step backwards.”

Arizona, Bahr said, “has the highest solar insolation in the country. It makes no sense to mess with one of the few industries that has been growing in Arizona during this difficult economic period and providing jobs and helping people lower their electric bills.”

Phoenix construction jobs dropped 14.4 percent in 2010, according to the Arizona Department of Commerce, but Arizona moved from eighth to third place nationally in providing solar employment in 2011, going from approximately 3,800 to 4,786 jobs. A third of those jobs were in installation.

Arizona also has, according to a National Renewable Energy Lab study, the third best combination of land area and resource potential in the U.S. for utility-scale solar power plant development (behind Utah and New Mexico). Yet, Commissioner Newman pointed out, “the ACC decision to substitute a trash burner for the RES solar requirement essentially kills utility-scale solar in Mohave County for the next decade. What are they thinking, and whose interests are they serving?"

Hello Phoenix. I have tickets to come down and get roasted in some real heat July 16th-20th. We're mostly coming to enjoy cheap shopping, time spent by the pool, and to do some hiking. There is one thing missing from that list that I have to do. Eat as much Mexican food as possible. In saying that I need help. Where is the best Mexican restaurant in your fair city? Obviously when we get there we'll use UrbanSpoon and the like but I would also like some input from you guys. Thoughts?

Valle Luna is my favorite, I have been eating it since I was a kid. They have 3 different locations but the one in mesa is the best because they have a sweet waterfront veiw and they give you bean dip with your chips and salsa. I recommend the pollo fundido or the cheese crisp extravaganza.

La Contessa is a modern taco shop in central phoenix with a killer salsa bar with about 10+ different types of salsa. Their horchatas have fresh fruit and walnuts in them and their quesadillas are made from a corn based pastry like material.

If you are looking for late night taqueria style mexican food then I'd suggest hitting up the taco stand outside the gay bar charlie's. They are only open thursday-saturday nights but are my go-to drunk food!

I regularly eat at Carolinas, Ritos, and La Condesa. For non-gringo Mexican food try La Tolteca Mexican Food and Tacos Atoyac. If you are looking for a nice sit-down dinner than Barrio Cafe or Barrio Queen. Everyone is going to have their own favorite family Sonoran place usually based on where they grew up in the valley.

THREE OUT OF FOUR PROVISIONS OF SB 1070 INVALIDATED BY SUPREME COURT TODAY!!!

TomAz
06-25-2012, 06:29 AM
3.
Sections 3, 5(C), and 6 of S. B. 1070 are preempted by federal law. Pp. 8–19.
(a)
Section 3 intrudes on the field of alien registration, a field inwhich Congress has left no room for States to regulate. In Hines, a state alien-registration program was struck down on the ground that Congress intended its “complete” federal registration plan to be a “single integrated and all-embracing system.” 312 U. S., at 74. That scheme did not allow the States to “curtail or complement” federallaw or “enforce additional or auxiliary regulations.” Id., at 66–67. The federal registration framework remains comprehensive. Because Congress has occupied the field, even complementary state regulationis impermissible. Pp. 8–11.
(b)
Section 5(C)’s criminal penalty stands as an obstacle to the federal regulatory system. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA), a comprehensive framework for “combating the employment of illegal aliens,” Hoffman Plastic Compounds, Inc. v. NLRB, 535 U. S. 137, 147, makes it illegal for employers to knowingly hire, recruit, refer, or continue to employ unauthorized workers, 8
U.
S. C. §§1324a(a)(1)(A), (a)(2), and requires employers to verify prospective employees’ employment authorization status,
Cite as: 567 U. S. ____ (2012) 3
Syllabus
§§1324a(a)(1)(B), (b). It imposes criminal and civil penalties on employers, §§1324a(e)(4), (f), but only civil penalties on aliens who seek, or engage in, unauthorized employment, e.g., §§1255(c)(2), (c)(8).IRCA’s express preemption provision, though silent about whether additional penalties may be imposed against employees, “does not bar the ordinary working of conflict pre-emption principles” or impose a “special burden” making it more difficult to establish the preemptionof laws falling outside the clause. Geier v. American Honda Motor Co., 529 U. S. 861, 869–872. The correct instruction to draw from the text, structure, and history of IRCA is that Congress decided it would be inappropriate to impose criminal penalties on unauthorized employees. It follows that a state law to the contrary is an obstacle tothe regulatory system Congress chose. Pp. 12–15.
(c) By authorizing state and local officers to make warrantless arrests of certain aliens suspected of being removable, §6 too createsan obstacle to federal law. As a general rule, it is not a crime for a removable alien to remain in the United States. The federal scheme instructs when it is appropriate to arrest an alien during the removal process. The Attorney General in some circumstances will issue awarrant for trained federal immigration officers to execute. If no federal warrant has been issued, these officers have more limited authority. They may arrest an alien for being “in the United States inviolation of any [immigration] law or regulation,” for example, but only where the alien “is likely to escape before a warrant can be obtained.” §1357(a)(2). Section 6 attempts to provide state officers with even greater arrest authority, which they could exercise with no instruction from the Federal Government. This is not the system Congress created. Federal law specifies limited circumstances in which state officers may perform an immigration officer’s functions. This includes instances where the Attorney General has granted that authority in a formal agreement with a state or local government. See, e.g., §1357(g)(1). Although federal law permits state officers to “cooperate with the Attorney General in the identification, apprehension, detention, or removal of aliens not lawfully present in the UnitedStates,” §1357(g)(10)(B), this does not encompass the unilateral decision to detain authorized by §6. Pp. 15–19.
