Hey Phoenix. I'll be seeing you Thanksgiving weekend. Please try to be less disgustingly hot and I'd also be okay if all of the cacti disappeared.

you're into house music, right? i've never been, but my house loving friends all rave about a club night called red monkey that usually happens the night of thanksgiving. if you're interested, i'll find more details for you. there's not much cool stuff that happens here, but this night has been around for years and people seem to love it.

Sorry, sparky. I'm a planking purist. We don't take photographs.

Just recently found out that the Cheesecake Factory has a great happy hour. It's m-f, 4-6, in the bar. Good drink specials (including Stella on tap for $2.50!) and lots of good apps for $5.00! The food is good, big portions, and of course great cheesecake! Plus the free bread is yummy too....

Can anyone give me any good advice on a decently priced bar out by the new stadium, somewhere we can go Sunday to watch the morning games, that might have a shuttle to the stadium for the afternoon game and won't have my car towed if I leave it in their parking lot? I am not at all familiar with that side of town so any help would be appreciated. :)

chairmenmeow47
09-27-2011, 10:10 AM
i don't know about shuttles or parking, but there's a native new yorker by the cabellos across from the westgate area on the other side of glendale, so walking wouldn't be too bad. they have all sorts of tvs for sports and i know the one in tempe opens earlier for games.

if you could find a ride, you could prolly park at my parents house on the other side of the 101 lol.

09-27-2011, 10:35 AM
There is free parking at kellis high school on 91st. Ave just north of glendale ave. A shuttle leaves from there to the game every 10-15 minutes. The shuttle has their own backroad which drops you off just north of maryland. The whole process takes about 20 minutes from getting out of the car to getting your ticket scanned.

Native New Yorker, Sandbar (although not totally close), or what about Westgate? There's a s-ton of bars in that place and I can't imagine why you'd get towed.

Oh, and "Cabellos" made me lulz. Cabela's...

I just wasn't sure how close they were to each other, I have only been out to westgate once like 3 years ago and haven't been to the stadium at all. If it's walking distance that's cool. I also kind of prefer the little hole in the wall bars where they won't charge me $8 for a beer. It's bad enough we will probably pay double that during the game. But Native New Yorker sounds like a good plan, they have pitchers at least. Thanks for the advice girls/guys! :)

As if the last month hasn't been awesome enough (all things considered), I found out today that Method was selected for the first annual Filmstock Film Festival. Filmstock is run by the Rebel Filmmaker Group, a collective of filmmakers started 2 years ago that until just a few months ago was hosting a monthly screening of independent short films (mainly locally produced, though there were also some international selections). It's happening at 6:30 next Thursday, October 13, at Pollack Tempe Cinemas (1825 E Elliot Rd, Tempe, AZ). If you RSVP, tickets are $8, and if it doesn't sell out & you want to buy at the door instead, they will be $10. If any of you are able to attend, I'd love to see you there!

Went to Gang Gang Dance at the Crescent Ballroom last night. It's an incredible venue. We hung out on the patio & talked to one of the employees, who was there on his day off. He scored us a couple of free drinks, including a honey whiskey & ginger beer concoction called the Honey Badger that was awesome & that you should purchase. They've got an insane month of shows lying ahead with the best still to come apparently. The stage setup itself is terrific. There are bleachers along the back (which I ended up having to use towards the end of the show, as my back & legs were killing me), seats along a rail maybe 10 feet from the stage, a nice little section for the under-21s, and the elevated stage you can see in the pics that have been posted.

In any event, the reason I'm writing all this in here instead of the General Phoenix Area Shows thread is that when we were going in, they handed us 2 free tickets to tonight's show, Chico Mann. He's in Antibalas and has a reportedly sick setup. I'm not familiar with the guy so I can't say what he sounds like, but I'm familiar with the shit at home I need to get done & what's in our bank account, and know that a free ticket to a show doesn't mean I won't end up spending money on alcohol, so I'm not going to make it. Would love for it to not go to waste & offer it to one of you fine folks, especially so you can experience the Crescent for relatively cheap. I work out in Chandler & live in Avondale, so I would want to meet before I get home from work. PM me if you're interested.

Luckily i'm the parent that knows what books he has read so I already looked up author names since i'm certain he won't remember who they were. I figure that with the $20 for 40 tickets will cover us. I also printed out 2 pages of vendor coupons for food. $5 parking, Then hopefully only about $10-15 out of pocket once we are there. I'm determined to keep this entire trip to the fair for 2 of us under $40.

Films # 5 (Apocalypse Salad), 6, and 7 (Rick's) were the only ones worth a damn. It was finally getting on a roll, but they saved the worst for last. I think Adrienne's group bailed early too. Film #8 was a good resume for a guy who wants to direct CSI episodes, but the script and acting were painful. #9 was...it seemed...the longest one and it was so inept I can't imagine what anyone involved was thinking. I'm assuming Amy left before #10 and that's good because it was one of the most disgusting and pointless things I've seen in ages.

I still say #4 was the worst, though. (The one with the virus and all the running that was supposed to be the future even though it looked like they traveled back to 1982 to shoot it.)

TallGuy, my favorite Mexican food joint in AZ, Carolina's, just opened up a location in Peoria (9030 W Peoria Ave). They have won tons of awards for their food. It's not full service, you order, they give you a number, you pick it up at the counter, and sit down at a table . I highly recommend it. Their tortillas are the bomb, paper-thin and delicious. Damn, now that it's on my mind I am going to try and hit Carolina's up for lunch tomorrow.

So it turns out that the lot I deliver trailers to just south of downtown is literally right around the corner from Carolina's...I tried it for the first time on Wednesday. I'm only doing it for the kids benefit and i'm not even sure that's a healthy thing. I see this as a cultural experience. I'm assuming the NASCAR crowd is big here and tons of teenagers high on drugs and liquor with freaky looking carnies begging you to play their games and nothing but sticks of butter...breaded on a stick. Gross.

While looking on the website for the Fair today I saw they posted a picture of an elephant who according to the caption was "sore and tired" from letting kids ride on him all day and the trainer was changing his shoes. I don't support that sort of thing.

I am only doing the fair because I need to do something out of the normal casino or playing bar poker with old people routine. I want to go on some rides and can't afford to go anywhere cool so I will take what I can get. I did check out the food choices this year, it all sounds fucking disgusting, so I will pass on that. The people watching is always a good time.

So it turns out that the lot I deliver trailers to just south of downtown is literally right around the corner from Carolina's...I tried it for the first time on Wednesday. Some of the best, most straight-forward Mexican food I've ever had. I can't imagine not going there every single time I'm out there for work from now on.

Excellent choice. Another one to try not far from there (for lunch) is Rito's, my personal fave.

Rick, Jacob and I came to the fest late and left a bit early (the films after yours were just awful, and we had to get out!). We were in front of you and hearding you speaking to people during the intermission, but we didn't get over to say hi. Jen walked by and said hi briefly though. I really liked your movie, and the actors were great. The donkey scene with that background music was HILARIOUS. We also thought the Apocalypse Salad movie was pretty funny too.

Sorry I apparently didn't see you. No offense meant! Thanks for the kind words. It was gratifying to hear laughter at the donkey scene this time instead of the nothing that came during the premiere.

#9 was so excruciating that I felt embarrassed to have even invited anybody to the screening. It was that fucking awful. Here's what happened in #10 (for Amy's benefit): girl wakes up & realizes she's been kidnapped. She gets driven out to the desert. Her kidnapper is apparently tired from the drive so he takes a nap. (Ah, napper, got it?) She screams to be let out, which reminds him that he's got somebody hogtied in his trunk, so he takes her out and half-buries her. For poignancy, there are flashbacks to her as a little girl. Or something. And you discover characters' names in the credits (i.e. Alysa's Husband John). It was like something I would've written when I wanted to kill everybody in high school, or when I was on my cannibalism kick back in '00.

"Apocalypse Salad" won the Audience Favorite award with 58 votes. I got 2nd place with 35. That's cool because I didn't have 35 people there and I don't know really anybody from this town (in the filmmaking community, anyway) so that was more than 20 votes I got from people who were simply voting objectively. Neat. "Apcalypse Salad" was also directed by one of the organizers of the event. It didn't sound to me like 75% of the audience was reacting all that strongly to the film (if there really were only 80 people there, as one of the other organizers told me in an apparently cocaine-induced conversation at Flanny's afterward). But whatever. I think the only one I really wouldn't have had any qualms with losing to was "Cult Status." The documentary won the Judge's Favorite and I can see why. Well done and all, so no big complaint here.

The Pizza one was indeed awful. Just painful to sit through. The "2044" one was similar, but not as bad.

I thought the "Salad" was good, I enjoyed it. Good timing on the dialogue, and kept you guessing as to what the Hell they were talking about. "Cult Status" was well done, too.

Rick, getting that many votes is indeed indicative of how good "Method" is. I definitely noticed that "salad" had a lot of friends/followers, etc there. So, seeing that get the most votes is not a surprise.

Really? I think we all voted for it in my row, it got some big laughs. (You had to vote for two, so you couldn't just back your friend.) No shame in losing to that. In retrospect, we should have voted for "Cult Status", because it was technically better than "Apocalypse" and we should helped split the vote in your favor. Not that it would have been enough.

My perception, which was apparently counter to yours and Jennifer's, was that it didn't get the biggest reaction. Obviously wrong. I also didn't realize there were a bunch of people sitting in the rows behind us who had worked on the movie. I've heard of film challenges in the past that are awarded on audience votes where a big strategy is to have a huge cast because then you're more likely to have the largest voting bloc. But yeah, no shame, it was well done, I just was put off a little by it particularly because of who directed it & his role in the event itself.

And to that last part, I'm not posting on Facebook about him being cocaine-fueled. I can appreciate some of what he had to say and may consider the $20/month membership, but was I wrong in thinking he looked to be on more than just alcohol?

I thought he seemed sober, but enthusiastic. I guess I can see your point of view. I've never really been around people on coke much, so I didn't think anything of it.

Anyway, the Pizza one was obviously made by people involved with the festival too, there was no way anyone was voting for that objectively. I was laughing at Apocalypse from the start...I thought it was going to be like Schitzopolis where they speak in a made up language and you had to learn it. It was dumb movie, but a clever idea. Plus, must have been hard to shoot in a van. (Actually, I feel like maybe they created a van set because the one they got out of seemed much smaller.)

Having done my fair share of coke in the past, among other drugs, it seemed like more than simple enthusiasm. Either coke, Ecstasy (which would just be weird in that environment, especially since he was having a beer), or a manic episode. Or maybe I'm projecting.

I agree that they must've done a van set because their cinematography wouldn't have been that good in so confined a space. Weren't you kind of having a laugh at Jeremy bragging about their $5,000 kit? Doubt that they would've gotten that quality in that small an area with a camera that would've only cost that much (if not less).

M Sparks

Then there is this shit.

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/2011/11/01/20111101lawsuits-vs-arpaio-andrew-thomas-dismissed.html

A U.S. District Court judge has dismissed all of the civil lawsuits filed by Maricopa County officials and Superior Court judges against Sheriff Joe Arpaio and former County Attorney Andrew Thomas.

Judge Neil Wake on Friday gave the plaintiffs -- retired judges Gary Donahoe, Barbara Rodriguez Mundell and Anna Baca; Supervisors Don Stapley and Mary Rose Wilcox; and county employees Susan Schuerman, Sandi Wilson and Gary Wetzel -- the opportunity to rewrite their complaints. But he warned them that he will not tolerate the melodrama and imprecise accusations that have characterized the political battles from which the lawsuits were generated.

"The parties are admonished that future pleadings shall be limited to concise recitations of relevant facts and law," Wake wrote. "Language that is irrelevant, inflammatory, or included for an improper purpose will be stricken from future pleadings."

the commission has two republicans, two democrats, and one independent. And the timing is while they're doing their work. What other time would they do this?

downingthief
11-02-2011, 01:41 PM
Timing in the sense that for the first time in years (and perhaps ever, it seems) Repubs are starting to lose grip on votes. Latest polls show Obama would carry the state, for example. One just came out days ago.
Governor Crypt Keeper is also on a book tour. Coincidence?? I think not.

And, you are correct on the Dems. Meant that it was the one "swing" position, her being Independent.

faxman75
11-02-2011, 01:42 PM
Nothing more shameful than concise recitations of relevant facts and law.

The shameful part is those complaints were filed by former judges and county employees. Were they filed carelessly as the judge stated or is this just a blanket dismissal based on the current judges possible ties and affiliations with the MCSO?

It makes the retired judges and county employees look incompetent.

TomAz
11-02-2011, 02:03 PM
I doubt the plaintiffs were writing their own pleadings. Instead, it makes their counsel look incompetent. Or it was a deliberate strategy that backfired. Or, it was a deliberate strategy to get press and they knew this would probably happen and were prepared for it. who knows.

My goal is to taste every single beer on tap in a single night.

I'm down for that challenge.

Anyone watching the election coverage? I'm stoked Stanton is ahead of Gullett right now. I'm wondering what's happening in Mesa with the Pearce recall?

I posted this on facebook but thought I would try here as well. Nick has to have a wisdom tooth pulled and doesn't have insurance. I am looking for a dentist that will take a new patient without insurance for emergency work, preferably one who works with broke people on the north side of town.

Locachica, my girlfriend is a student at Phoenix College in the dental hygienist program. They mostly do cleanings and not sure if they do extractions (highly doubt it), but it wouldn't hurt to check and perhaps see if they can even refer you to a dental clinic, perhaps either at PC or at another school. Yes, it'd be done with students, but they are very closely supervised.

Contact PC Dental Clinic @ 602-285-7323

Also, doing a brief online search I came across this "Arizona School of Dentistry" which may offer inexpensive extractions:

ASDOH Dental Clinic
5855 E. Still Circle
Mesa, AZ 85206
480.248.8100

Dental Care West
20325 N 51st Ave., Unit 156
Glendale, AZ 85308
623.251.4700

I'll also check with my lady to see if she has any recommendations too.

locachica73
11-09-2011, 07:40 AM
I hadn't thought of that. That's a good idea. I had found Aspen Dental who gives you a free first visit for a consultation but the prices for an extraction range from $150 - $300 or higher if he has to have oral surgery. UGH. Luckily his mom has a money tree and is going to pay for it, but I might get extra points for finding a better deal. Or less points for trying to refer her baby to a student. Hmmm. I will throw both options out there just to be safe.

I fucking knew it

Jerice Hunter was arrested Monday on suspicion of child abuse involving her daughter, the missing Glendale 5-year-old, Jhessye Shockley, according to authorities.

Her arrest comes six weeks after Jhessye was first reported missing.

"With the information that has come to our investigators within the past few days, we do not believe it will be likely that we will find Jhessye alive," Sgt. Brent Coombs, a Glendale police spokesman said.

According to Coombs, recent information led police and the FBI Monday to serve a second search warrant on Hunter's apartment near 45th and Glendale avenues. He declined to elaborate, saying it would be "completely inappropriate" to disclose the new details of the case.

"She is our No. 1 focus," Coombs said of Hunter.

He said authorities on more than one occasion have offered to give the mother a polygraph test, but she has been uncooperative.

Coombs said police and Silent Witness have increased the reward to $25,000 for anyone who leads them to Jhessye.

He said it is "extremely important" to locate Jhessye and "bring to justice those responsible for her disappearance."

"I'd like to make it very clear that this is by no means the end to this investigation," he said.

Coombs described Hunter's arrest as a "step down the investigative path towards that final conclusion."

Earlier Monday, Hunter's mother and father denied their daughter had any involvement in Jhessye's disappearance.

"I don't feel it and a mother can feel certain things," said Shirley Johnson, Hunter's mother.

Hunter's father, Jesse Johnson, said he talked to his daughter on the phone about 8 a.m. Monday but that reporters had informed him of her possible arrest.

He defended his daughter, his voice rising as reporters questioned him about Hunter's reported arrest.

"I'm going to stand by her because I know my daughter hasn't done anything," he said. "My daughter loves her kids and is worried about Jhessye like everyone else."

Johnson and other family members were briefly at the apartment near 45th and Glendale avenues, which has crime scene tape around its perimeter. Crews in white gear were visible at the complex this morning.

Jhessye was reported missing Oct. 11. Hunter said she returned home from running errands and found the 5-year-old missing from their apartment. Older siblings were supposed to be watching the girl.

Child Protective Services removed Hunter's other children the following day. Hunter later gave birth and that child was removed from the home as well.

They're going to be playing with 4 other local bands - We Were Strangers, Cosmic Goat, Poorwater, and Revision 7 - at the Marquee next Friday. Tickets through Luckymanonline are $10 but with fees, whereas my friend has some to sell directly that cut out the fees.

Here's a link to the band's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/1967band

If you're interested in attending (I've got tickets for myself and Jen already, and we'll be having dinner/drinks somewhere beforehand) and want to save a few bucks, let me know and I'll coordinate the purchase of the tickets directly from Jaime.

You obviously didn't read the rest of the cuteness.

This group was started in 2007 by a new resident to the valley. His goal was to meet people with similar musical interests. While he (Jon) is still a member, he has stepped down as Organizer. The group's purpose remains the same. Some people have the impression that Phoenix is somewhat lacking in culture but there is quite a vibrant music scene here. The focus of this group is music that is outside of the mainstream. whether it be indie rock, shoegaze, hip hop, alt. country, neo-folk, noise pop, dance-punk, riot grrrl, emo, lo-fi or math rock.

We have a few CD exchanges throughout the year, where members create mixes and meet to share them. We
go see a lot of shows - nationally touring bands as well as local ones. Even if a certain concert isn't officially posted as an event chances are you can find someone on the message board who might be going.

Don't be put off by the fact that this group is private. It's only for security. If you're genuinely interested then we encourage you to join.

Music can be a powerful bond between people and a lot of friendships have been made in this group.

You probably belong in this group if....

....you still think buying music in record stores is cool.

....you don't even bother to turn on the FM radio when you get in the car.

....even your guilty pleasures are bands most people have never heard of.

....your friends don't understand why you would go out of state just to to see a concert.

.... you're constantly giving mix tapes to your friends only to find out months later that they never bothered to listen to it.

....you'll go see a band you've never heard of on the chance that they might be good.

....you usually buy two concert tickets, knowing that you'll have to find someone to drag with you.

.... you've broken up with someone because they actually put Celine Dion on a mix for you.

....you put on your favorite CD at work and you get a bunch of weird looks.

....before you fasten your seat belt or turn on the AC you find something good on your iPod.

....you may download tracks on the internet for free, but if you like it you'll pay for it because you want to support musicians.

....you listen to bands that don't even exist yet.

....you meant to save money for groceries but blew it all at the record store.

Get it??? It's like those e-mails where you're reading the list and are like, "Hey! That's MEEE!"
