How far of a drive is it to this rash-ridden death trap of a salt river from Chandler? Sebastian keeps telling me that we'll be getting up at 6 AM for this adventure and that grosses me out.

From Chandler its maybe an hour drive, depending on where in chandler, not too bad really. You do want to get there pretty early though, if not it's too fucking hot by the time you get done. Getting there around 8 is a good plan.

There is no need to wake up that early, but I always prefered going later anyway. I went that early once and it was ridiculously packed.

We got in a huge car accident just outside of the parking lot on Memorial day weekend (our driver was sober believe it or not). My friend nailed this car with a family in it. We were all talking to the cops as the buses passed us. People flipping us off, laughing etc. Both cars were totaled so we all had to ride in one of those police wagons to meet our ride(s). The family was giving us the worst looks ever on the ride back. Awkwaaaaaard.

The last time I went tubing, I almost drowned when my tube got tangled in these roots just under the water at a fork in the river - it flipped over and I got stuck upside down and because of the way I was stuck under the roots couldn't do anything about it. All of my friends where a little bit ahead of me, and there was no one else around, so I was under for a few minutes before anyone noticed. Luckily one of my friends jumped out of her tube and swam over to help me out - then her tube floated away from her and since the water was relatively low there were these boulders just past the fork that were exposed, which she pretty much just had to let the rapids carry her over on her ass to get to the bank. She was completely covered in bruises, and probably pretty lucky that she didn't break something. But, if it weren't for her, I probably would have died.

So, yeah, no more tubing for me.

Has anyone actually watched a movie at FilmBar? I'm thinking of having a screening there but have been cautioned that it's not an ideal environment in which to watch a film due to the setup being more bar-oriented. That just seems kind of odd to me, though, considering what FilmBar was being touted as initially, and so I'm wondering if they either have a bar in the front where they show films (and if this is what the cautioners are referring to) in addition to a theater in the back that's a more bonafide film-watching experience, or if the people cautioning me on FilmBar were thinking of another place.

The theater is in the back, separated from the actual bar/lounge.

I.F.A.
07-18-2011, 08:41 AM
Yeah, I've watched a few films there now and have no idea what whoever said that was talking about. The theater is separated, with the bar in the "lobby" area, and while it has a few high-top tables in the back of the actual theater room, it also has more-comfortable-than-normal theater seats in the front.

Supposedly, I think there's a server for the theater to refresh drinks and whatnot during movies, however I've never actually seen that happen, so there hasn't been any interruption during the times that I've been there.

I think it would be ideal for a screening.

i could do four peaks, but only at noon or later for lunch. meetings all morning. meetings meetings meetings.

one thing to consider about four peaks is the party size. there is no real A/C there and seating is hard to come by, so we may have to eat outside... in july... in phoenix... i'd still come, but just throwing that out there :)

I could use a few good food recommendations for the Glendale/Peoria area. I'm going to (in all likelihood) be out there the last weekend in August for my fantasy football draft and we always go to the same places. Chick Fil A for lunch, somewhere like Elephant Bar for dinner.

I'd like to suggest something new to the group that has really good food...any ideas are much appreciated.

Most Mexican restaurants in this state are at least good. There are several that are exceptional. Not sure about names of restaurants in Phoenix (only familiar with the ones in Tucson) but you won't have a problem finding something great. That's the one thing I will miss when I eventually move away. I don't think I'll find mexican food anywhere in this country -not California and from what some friends in Tucson tell me, not even NM or Texas - that's as good as it is out here.

I could eat Mi Nidito, Michas, Rosas and several others in this town every day and I would rarely get tired of it. Just thinking about it is making me super hungry.

TallGuy, my favorite Mexican food joint in AZ, Carolina's, just opened up a location in Peoria (9030 W Peoria Ave). They have won tons of awards for their food. It's not full service, you order, they give you a number, you pick it up at the counter, and sit down at a table . I highly recommend it. Their tortillas are the bomb, paper-thin and delicious. Also, I grew up in the Glendale/Peoria area. Not much other than chainey places over there, although Tomas is very correct about Carolinas. Just be prepared to wait. And make sure to get a dozen tortillas to go.

Tagliani's over at Arrowhead Mall is decent. Been in town for quite awhile. Tilted Kilt has decent bar food and hot chicks in schoolgirl outfits. Famous Dave's is pretty good for BBQ, as is Dillons.

Really getting sick of reading these stories about the Goldwater Institute. This is benefiting a SCHOOL:

http://www.azcentral.com/community/scottsdale/articles/2011/08/24/20110824goldwater-institute-sues-cave-creek-district-bond-law.html

The Goldwater Institute is charging that legislation approved last year allowing school districts to spend unused bond money is unconstitutional because it benefits so few districts.

Under the law, districts that have unused capital-bond proceeds from elections more than nine years earlier can use that money on any capital improvements, such as renovating a school, and not just the originally intended project.

About 3 percent of districts in the state currently fall under the provisions of the law passed by the Legislature in 2010, said Christina Kohn, attorney for the Phoenix-based Goldwater Institute.

The institute, on behalf of a Cave Creek voter, filed the lawsuit against the Cave Creek Unified School District in April, the day before construction was set to begin on a cafeteria expansion at Cactus Shadows High School. The district planned to pay for the renovation and other school refurbishments with $13 million in leftover bond money.

Kohn and Don Peters, attorney for the district, presented their oral arguments Tuesday in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Kohn said the narrowness of the law makes it a "special law," applicable to too few districts and therefore in violation of the state Constitution.

"If the purpose of the law is to help school districts with their financial troubles, then it's impossibly limited," she said. "Every district is going through financial trouble."

Peters said that just because the legislators might have been thinking about a specific district when they passed a law doesn't mean it was intended for only one district. As time passes, he added, more districts will be eligible under the law.

"In November, it will be the nine-year anniversary of the 2002 election," Peter said, so any bond money left over from that election would be freed up for other district projects.

Cave Creek's $13 million was left over from a $41 million bond issue approved in 2000 for a new high school and several other projects.

The district built new elementary and middle schools, but voters later rejected the new high school. That put the leftover money in limbo for several years. Because voters approved the money for a new high school, it couldn't be spent.

Originally, the Legislature passed a law in 2009 to allow districts to spend bond money, but it was determined to be too narrow to withstand a legal challenge. So, the legislation was rewritten to be broader and was signed into law in 2010.

The Goldwater lawsuit also claims the northeast Valley district is violating a contract with voters because "school repairs" were not included in the wording of the pamphlet mailed before the 2000 bond vote.

Not that Dylan would actually show up, but nice idea all the same.

This is true. He has come SO close on a couple of occasions.

I've discovered Pizzeria Bianco is not crazy packed on Fridays between 2 and 4ish.

I have exploited this discovery and will continue to do so whenever possible.

I have to get my stupid car window fixed today. Anyone want to meet for lunch somewhere I can reach by light rail?

locachica73
09-15-2011, 08:41 AM
I wish I could, but I only get a half hour lunch. :(

If anyone is free Wednesday around 6 - 6:30 Amyzzz and I are meeting for dinner at Richardsons @ 16th St & Bethany Home, they have amazing food and prickley pear margaritas. I haven't been there since they had the fire but I am assuming those statements are still true. :)

Has that re-opened? thought something else was there now. I think they still are running Dick's Hideaway, and the Rokerij.

It reopened, it is now a little further north, the new address is 6335 N 16th St.

Mr. Dylanja
09-15-2011, 12:21 PM
It's next door to the Rokerij now, I didn't know it had opened already.

Loca, if you guys can make it a little bit earlier, the Rokerij has arguably the best HH in town from 3-6.

I am getting my hair did @ 4, which takes about an hour, the soonest I could get down there is probably 5:30. But I am all for HH, even if it's only for half an hour. What's so good about thier happy hour? Is it better than a wonderfully tasty prickly pear margarita?

Mr. Dylanja
09-15-2011, 01:09 PM
The place is pretty high end, at least to me. Their appetizers, called "small plates" usually range between $9-12, but for hh, they're all $5. In my opinion, you will not find higher quality food for $5 anywhere. I think I've tried every single item, about a dozen or so, and it's all deliciuos.

Mmmmm....lamb. Drool.

I love the garlic plate.

locachica73

I have had the garlic plate too, so yummy, although not something you want to eat if you plan on making out in the next 72 hours, unless your makeout partner has also eaten it.

I haven't had lamb, it's on my list of things to try.

There is a big indoor wave pool at Kiwanis but apparently it's only seasonal and not currently open according to what I saw online.

Sigur Ros - INNI is going to playing at FilmBar in Phoenix. I haven't made it to FilmBar yet so i'm thinking this will be my first visit. No word on the dates and times yet, they just posted a facebook link.

They just posted a response that the film will be shown in November.

Hey San Francisco. Our natural flora isn't going anywhere. Sort of like your Giants.
