My friends are trying to talk me in to going on their party bus, but I don't it's going to happen. It's ninety bucks at the door, open bar, but that's a little too steep for me with Coachella right around the corner.

I.F.A.

Eek, that's a bit expensive. I think they're planning mine for the fall. I'm actually looking forward to it.

TheClares
03-25-2011, 08:15 PM
After close to 15 years, today I am cancelling my subscription to the Arizona Repugnant. This has been a difficult decision - I believe a thriving journalism is important to maintaining a healthy democracy - and it's not like it's expensive. It's just that I never read the damned thing. Ultimately, my decision is driven by all the paper sitting around more than anything. Even though the paper is a piece of shit.

The NY Times is making digital-only subscriptions available starting next week, so I will cancel my home-delivery subscription with them too, even though that paper is great.

I cancelled my Fountain Hills Times subscription (weekly local paper for Tom and me) because i was barely reading it, and it was being used mainly as a way to start fires in my fireplace.

FYI -

Tip #1 - The New York Times digital subscription is free with delivery of the Sunday NYT, which is cheaper (in most markets) than the Digital Subscription alone. Nice suggestion, don't want the paper copy of even the Sunday paper, have it delivered to your local library or other worthy location.

Tip #2 - There are already Pay/Firewall add-ons for Firefox that will let you bypass their limitations of reading articles for free. Apparently the paywall security is so weak it only took 4 lines of code to defeat it.

you know in 15 years living in Az I have seen all sorts of things (as I have reported at length elsewhere in this thread)... but I have to see a gila monster. not a glimpse, not even once.

I.F.A.
03-28-2011, 10:54 AM
I've yet to see a gila monster in the wild, but when I was a kid we used to play with (i.e. capture and, from its perspective, probably torment) the horned toads that hung around my parent's cabin up in Pinewood.

Having grown up in the boonies, I grew up used to things like finding rattle snakes (and all manner of lizard and bug) in the yard (and, once, house). They don't really startle or bother me - I just pay very close attention when hiking and give them a wide berth.

NachoCat

i will never get used to snakes. we used to have them out at my house too, but they are still limbless freaks to me.

and yeah scott, magnus was adorable! i've only hung out with jim maybe once or twice. i try to see him at the marquee, but he's usually busy.

I.F.A.
03-28-2011, 11:00 AM
^ Yeah, I also just like snakes. I kept trying to get my parents to let me have one as a kid, but my mom had a strict "no vermin" pet policy.

602 is the area code for central Phoenix. 623 is for cities on the west side (Glendale, El Mirage, Surprise, etc... also, based on the map, Anthem), and 480 is the east side (Tempe, Scottsdale, Chandler, Gilbert, etc.).

I think these newer folks like Lick the Lizard, insbordnat, & Sean the Jeweler, would be well served to post pics of themselves, if not in this thread then in the Post Your Picture thread. Unless your intentions in saying you're attending the festival are not to fraternize with the rest of us but simply to let us know that you, too, will be in attendance, leaving us to wander the polo fields questioning if random passers-by are you.

I was half-joking, anyway. That guy is 100% the real deal, and his show proved it. He did a great thing for those kids on his show by giving them confidence and self-esteem and such. I just wish he didn't have to turn them all into such douches in the process.

Fun fact: the second season of The Pickup Artist was filmed in Phoenix/Scottsdale.

Paging captncrzy:

How hard would it be for me to change the name on an airline ticket? For example, if I bought 2 round-trip tickets with my account; the first ticket is in my name and the second ticket is in my wife's name. But later I find out my wife can't make the trip so I want to change the name on the second ticket to someone else. How hard would this be and would there be any fees associated with this from US Airways?

Does anyone know the policy for changing the name on a ticket at Southwest?

I'm trying to plan a trip as a surprise so I need to figure out my best options. Thanks.

Paging John:

I have interest in going to the symphony and have never gone before. I was browsing their website and I was considering one of the May 5 - 7 Grieg & Tchaikovsky performances. I know very little about the symphony other than I love listening to symphonies on internet radio Venice and on Sirus/XM's Symphony channel. I started out just liking Chopin and piano pieces when I was a bit younger and now i'm appreciating much more though I rarely know what i'm listening to or who. I know I like Mozart and Bach quite a bit but I enjoy almost everything I hear.

I look forward to your thoughts. If I enjoy and I think I will, i'll most likely purchase a Season pass for the upcoming season in May as they are apparently only $30 for me since i'm a student and that gets me into all of the "classics" concerts.

Thanks.

Yeah, there will be a change fee with every airline; the fee amount varies by company. I think it's somewhere between $50 and $100.

I can wholeheartedly recommend the Phoenix Symphony. The recently renovated Symphony Hall looks and sounds great.

Also the piano concerti they are playing at those shows are both great and both popular. This is at least the third time in the last decade that the PSO has programmed Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto and may be the 4th or 5th. I know they have done the Grieg in that span, too.

I am guessing you are looking for balcony tickets. This is very reasonable and you will have a much more full view of the orchestra than from the floor, which can be good when first seeing a orchestra perform live.

I had partial season tickets to the Symphony for a good number of years (though the most I ever had was half the season... which worked out to a about a concert a month) and was very happy with it.

Also: one very nice thing about the symphony is that you know what they're going to play. You can familiarize yourself with the music well beforehand... that is if you do decide to buy the series pass (really? only $30 for 14 concerts? That's unbelievably good) you can start listening to Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, Elgar's Engima Variations, Liszt's Piano Concerto #1, Dvorak's Cello Concerto, Sibelieus' 3rd Symphony and Beethoven's 7th Symphony (to name the pieces I would be most excited for.)

Excellent, apparently because i'm a student it's only $10 on the day of the show one hour before showtime as well. This should give me the ability to attend a couple before the new season starts. One show a month is probably all I would get to but if the pass is $30 I would obviously just get that and enjoy the flexibility. I will find out more in person at the Box office but for now my plan is to get to those early May performances.

I wish we'd get set times this week, give us more time to research bands that play during periods when we don't have anything else lined up. As it is, I'm going to be so swamped next week in my couple of days at work that I won't have time to do any further research. Meh.

How much time is everyone taking off for Coachella? I was only going to go for my requisite Thursday, Friday, and Monday, but the following week is month-end and I've seen so many people come back from vacation in the middle of month-end and be saddled with a bunch of hot starts (and kind of experienced it myself last week, which was just a regular ol' week) so I decided to take the Tuesday & Wednesday after the festival off, too. When I get back on Thursday, it'll be a crazy day but I'll only be helping other people with their orders instead of having to bother with any of my own. Will probably end up having to work that weekend to get through the mountain of e-mails that will undoubtedly be awaiting me.

Oh, and if you're curious why I've been so unusually chatty on the board today (I'm sure nobody's noticed but 2 posts in the middle of the day constitutes chattiness), I went bike riding yesterday & boy is my taint sore. I actually probably could've toughed it out & gone to work today but I had my laptop with me & the files for the accounts starting today & tomorrow, plus my car is still in the shop & I didn't feel like carpooling. That and I've got sick time available, so why not use some of it, even if it's only going to amount to an hour?
But the bike riding was a success for the most part once the seat was adjusted so I wasn't standing on my tiptoes when I was straddling the seat. I managed to ride around and stay upright. Turning is an adventure and stopping can be as well, but I think I'll be able to work it out next Thursday so I'm not falling into traffic en route to the fest. Not horrific considering it was my first time ever giving it a go.

Dylan: I work for ADP, the payroll company. I set up new accounts. I kick ass at it, as evinced by being #1 in my department in quality survey scores in the 2nd quarter of the fiscal year & #2 YTD. (The guy who's #1 has about 7 years on me in seniority. I'm the 3rd least tenured person here. I'm kind of a big deal.) It's kind of a rotten thing because I've been here long enough now that sales reps know how good I am and want me to do their tough orders, so there are periods when I'm really slammed because I've got all these reps turning in a bunch of orders & requesting me. It was what my goal was when I first got here, to be recognized for quality, but then here's the rub.

Arizona House Passes Bill Allowing Guns On Campuses

April 7, 2011 11:57:11 PM

PHOENIX, April 7 (Reuters) - The Arizona House on Thursday approved a landmark bill allowing guns on campuses, making it only the second state in the nation to allow firearms to be carried at colleges and universities.

The Republican-led House voted 33 to 24 to allow firearms to be carried in the open or concealed in public rights of way, such as campus streets and roadways.

"We're allowing people to defend themselves," said Rep. David Gowan Sr., a Republican, who voted for the bill.

"The purpose of carrying a gun with you is to defend yourself against that aggressor," he added.

The measure now goes to Arizona's Republican Governor Jan Brewer. She has not said if she will sign it into law but has been a strong gun-rights advocate in the past.

If the measure is enacted, Arizona would join Utah as the only states to specifically allow such gun rights. Utah goes one step further, allowing firearms inside campus buildings.

The move comes as opponents and supporters face off across the country over gun laws, with nine states this year seeking to broaden citizens' rights to tote firearms on campuses.

Supporters of Arizona's bill argue that a person's constitutional right to bear arms should not be taken away just because he or she is on a campus. They claim that allowing guns there could save lives in the event of a campus shooting.

But the bill faced widespread opposition from college and university administrators, faculty and law enforcement officials.

Opponents claimed it would put campus police at a dangerous disadvantage in trying to prevent campus shootings.

Faculty groups at the state's three universities passed resolutions against the bill.

Rep. Steve Farley, a Democrat, said the idea strikes at the heart of higher education and will make it hard to attract top-flight faculty and staff.

"I don't believe this is a good move for us," he told legislators during the vote. "I think it compromises the key core goal of our universities ... (to) have a free and unintimidating exchange of ideas."

Other lawmakers questioned the bill because it does not specifically define what constitutes public rights of way. They said a legal challenge is likely. (Reporting by David Schwartz; Editing by Tim Gaynor and Ellen Wulfhorst)

I guess we're heading to the Living Room first, which is right next to the Main Ingredient on 7th St north of McDowell. I'm planning on heading to Local Breeze shortly after for some drinks and to walk to the show though.

Our State just gets worse, and worse:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/20/gary-ackerman-would-tread-on-tea-party-plates_n_851665.html

A new Arizona license plate would say "Don't Tread on Me," but that's exactly what New York Democratic Rep. Gary Ackerman wants the federal government to do with a new bill.

The plate, proposed by state Sen. Don Shooter (R-Yuma) in homage to the Tea Party, would be paid for by fees from would-be tag holders. The plates cost $25, $17 of which would be allocated to "promote Tea Party governing principles."

The New York lawmaker doesn't mind the idea of a politically-charged plate, but thinks putting the proceeds towards an interest group like the Tea Party amounts to a misuse of public money.

“Using official government resources to help bankroll an explicit political agenda –- whether on the right or left -– is flat out wrong,” said Ackerman.

In an effort to block such actions, Ackerman plans to introduce a bill in Congress called the "License Plate Political Slush Fund Prevention Act."

“It seems that the GOP in Arizona is attempting to do nothing more than create a slush fund for its Tea Party friends," he said. "It’s a scheme that smacks of cronyism, and should not be allowed to become law.”

Other states have proposed Tea Party plate laws, including Nevada, South Carolina and Virginia, and Texas passed one. But the money collected in those states doesn't fuel the Tea Party.

“License plates shouldn’t be used as political payoffs,” Ackerman contended. “The Arizona GOP might think differently if the legislation were to create a MoveOn.org license plate," he said, referring to the liberal advocacy group.

The congresman's bill would put the brakes on such laws by docking states that pass them 15% of their federal highway money.
Shooter's office did not answer requests for comment.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) has not said if she will sign the measure, which has passed both houses of the state legislature.

Anything! Right now I work from home for U-haul doing sales and reservations. I've been doing it for about a year now and I'm getting burnt out on the whole on the phone for 10 hours a day 6 days a week. I get paid $8 hour plus incentive so at this point I'm really open to ANY suggestions.

Fortunately for you, you're in a heavy call center state. Uhaul pays shitty, but there are tons of call centers around that will start you at more like $12 an hour....AMEX, Discover, BofA, Chase, USAirways (I don't think we have any openings though). Southwest used to have a call center here but they closed it. Also check Wells Fargo--they have a shitload of offices here, plus all the branches and they're always looking for tellers....you'd make more than you make now and it's a good place to start.

I've got questionable credit so all the banks/cc companys are out. Also, I'm a little burnt out on the phones for right now. I'd consider doing a strictly customer service position on the phones but I don't want another job where I'm obligated to beat an 80 year old lady over the head until she agrees to make a reservation.

almost all phone positions now include an upsell at the end of the call. just another way to maximize profits by money-hungry corporations.

put the legs of the crib in glass jars (like mason jars) and keep the crib away from the wall by a foot or two. this will prevent scorpions from getting in the crib.

we have a service that we use that puts a barrier (chemical) around the house that works ok but is by no means perfect.

The worst part is a substantial number of those people seem unable to tell the difference between "this is wrong on principle, license plate money should not go to fund any type of political group" (which is a sound argument) and "government is bad so they should give this money to the tea party and anyone who disagrees is an anti-american lefty".

Exactly, that's the thing. I would be equally opposed if it were a Dem plate.

downingthief

But, there in lies the difference...I don't think the Dem party would insist on money going to the party. Maybe I am naive on that, but based on what I see, I think that is accurate.

yes, and I think there is no shortage of principled Republicans who feel the same way. It's the wrong thing to do.. which was sort of the point of that article.

It just goes to show the mental deficiencies of the teaparty supporters that they are unable to even construct the semblence of a logical argument to support their position.

I actually like scorpions... as long as they are not within stinging vicinity. I think they're interesting. Definitely important to scorpion proof the house if you're in an area that has a lot of them though - I grew up in the boonies, and we were constantly finding them (and geckos, and giant mutant beetles, and the occasional snake) in the house. I'm kind of surprised that I never got stung, actually, considering where they would show up.

As for the license plate thing - I'm pretty much not a fan of special plates in general. And, it's slightly ridiculous how many bills get introduced each year for new ones. They're completely superfluous, and imo, a huge waste of legislative time. I'm of the mind that they should all be done away with. If you want to give money to a cause, great. You don't need a special snowflake license plate to tell everyone about it.
