LOL, yeah, I didn't even consider that it might be taken the wrong way. I was a little out of it yesterday. We are champions at throwing bean bags at little holes across a bar patio. Does that sound better?

OK, the Sunday after Thanksgiving is still a possibility for a party...only John has given that a thumbs down. But since Ivy's Disneyland trip is canceled, she suggested we do something that weekend- Saturday, Dec 11th. I already had the day off for the trip, so it's the only time I can do a Saturday party properly. There aren't really any good shows that day in town that I can see. And I can take the money saved on this trip and get the patio outfitted properly. Rock Band, hot tub, good beer, margs, grilling...who's in?

I still might do an open house or something on that Sunday for my "old" friends, any of you are welcome to drop by that too, but the real party will be on Dec 11th unless someone gives me a good reason not to.

Prop. 203: Provisional ballots leaning toward AZ marijuana measure

PHOENIX - Maricopa County will continue counting outstanding provisional ballots through the weekend if necessary despite a state law that generally says all counting must be completed by Friday.

The votes could sway the outcome of a statewide medical marijuana initiative that is failing by a tiny margin of the 1.63 million votes counted since the Nov. 2 general election.

Votes posted late Thursday showed the measure trailing by just 1,457 votes, a pickup of more than 1,500 yes votes for the day.

Maricopa County Recorder Helen Purcell told the Associated Press on Friday that provisional ballots counted the previous day were leaning in favor of the measure. Such ballots tend to be from less-conservative voters.

Proposition 203 would allow use of the drug only for serious diseases including cancer.

drugks Gillespie, didn't you come on the board a couple years back asking for a lawyer because you got yourself into some sort of trouble? Care to divulge what that was now that we can look back on it and laugh?

Two weeks before Coachella 2008 I was arrested with my now fiance in our home. They had come to serve a bench warrant she was ignorant of. A year and a half earlier she was pulled over and caught with a quarter of bud and a pipe. She cried, he took her shit, and let her go without any paperwork. I think this was on Thanksgiving night. I figured he had cut her a break because of the holiday and she's a cute chick. Time passes, no letter. We move in together.

At some point they send an order to appear under the charges to her old address, it gets returned, warrant issued. They came to our condo just before sunrise, lots of cops and a US marshal, to clear a warrant on a 23 year old girl for personal possession of pot. At least they knocked (beat the shit out of the door) as it was only a bench (not a search) warrant. In my dreary state of panic and confusion I made a feeble attempt to hide one or to things, but we kept a lot of worked glass pieces around, bubblers and what have you. When I finally opened the door I was "asked" to step outside. They asked who was on the lease, as soon as I said we both were they went in and nearly shot her because she was in the walk in closet trying to put clothes on.

Before I know it, "There are lots of goodies in there" I hear one of them say. I'm starting to wake up now realize the gravity of what is happening. They tear the place apart. They find bongs, pipes, herb, and 2 oz of the largest stems and caps that they have ever seen. I'm booked and OR'd. I bail her out for $900.

I find the right lawyer, a certified specialist in criminal law with the highest peer rating, whose office is across the street from the courthouse. He lives there. He was worth every penny. I did a year of task, 6 mos of weekly substance abuse, and 48 fucking AA meetings. Tasc cost me almost 3k. My color was 2-3 times a week for 3 months. All said and done we got a total of 8 felonies dismissed at a total cost of about $15,000.00. Dismissed without prejudice. Tasc is a joke. AA meetings for mushrooms? Whatever. Very expensive lessons learned.

God, I'll say! I mean, I can understand the expences for whatever happened after they came in the door, but I'm confused as to how they were able to come to the door in the first place if she was given no paperwork the night she got pulled over. I had to drive down Mill today (which I avoid doing with great care) and noticed that:

The Library has changed into Blondies that is now open, there is a Kampai Sushi and Wine Bar that is now open, Divertis Bar and Grill has taken over that place at the end of Mill that was something called Suckerpunch Diner, there's a gourmet popcorn place now, they are opening up a Mellow Mushoom Pizza place (I'm very excited for this place; 100 beers--48 on tap) and a School of Rock (replacing the Cherry Pit lounge--formerly known as Club UM for us old-timers).

Some new good pre-Marquee places to go!

Cancer
Glaucoma
HIV/AIDS
Hepatitis C

Severe and chronic pain
Severe nausea

Severe or persistent muscle spasms (including multiple sclerosis)

there is very little turkey in a turducken. a few pieces of turkey is ok, but 18 lbs of it is ridiculous.

deep fried is best way though. soooo juicy. that's usually my biggest concern is how dry turkey gets.

American Excess: Imagine Thanksgiving Without It

by Linton Weeks

November 18, 2010

As Thanksgiving 2010 approaches, America's tendency toward excess seems to be getting more and more excessive.

First there was the turducken. Introduced to popular culture by supersized chef Paul Prudhomme in the early 1980s, the turducken is a boneless chicken — stuffed with sausagey filling, jammed into a boneless duck — stuffed with cornbread dressing, jammed into a boneless turkey — stuffed with oyster mash. As Newsweek wrote in 1982, "when sliced, you have three birds and a rainbow of stuffings."

Now CHOW.com presents a Thanksgiving Turkey Cake that features layers of turkey, sausage, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce — topped with a sweet potato spread and mini-marshmallows.

And Bon Appetit and The Wall Street Journal are reporting on the Cherpumple Monster Pie Cake — a dessert compiled of an apple pie in a layer of spice cake, atop a pumpkin pie in a layer of yellow cake, atop a cherry pie in a layer of white cake bathed in cream cheese frosting. It's enough to make a Pilgrim grimace.

If the contemporary holiday were to be illustrated by a paragraph of adjectives, it would be extremely: luscious, creamy, buttery, oily, salty, sugary, yum-yummy, snacktacular, scrumpdiddlyumptious with over-the-top topping and a million cherries on top.

Take a glance at the Facebook page labeled simply Thanksgiving and see what Americans are thankful for: spaghetti squash, sweet potato yeast rolls, pecan pies, ginger snaps, apple cranberry crisps, family, friends, football and more food.

"I can't wait to pig out," says one of the more than 35,000 people who like the page.

American Excess

Rick Rodgers, author of Thanksgiving 101, says, "Thanksgiving was always about food."

As every schoolchild knows, Thanksgiving was created by early American agrarians to celebrate a bountiful harvest. According to lore, they shared that bounty with Native Americans. However, as some historians have pointed out, for the Pilgrims, the holiday was a religious respite from farmwork and they used it more as a time for fasting than for feasting. They believed in appreciating their abundance, not squandering it.

"This modern version of Thanksgiving would horrify the devout Pilgrims and Puritans who sailed to America in the 17th century," historian Eve Laplante wrote in The Boston Globe in 2007. "The holiday that gave rise to Thanksgiving — a 'public day' that they observed regularly — was almost the precise opposite of today's celebration. It was not secular, but deeply religious. At its center was not an extravagant meal, but a long fast. And its chief concern was not bounty but redemption: to examine the faults in oneself — and one's community — with an eye toward spiritual improvement."

Over the years, the religiosity of the holiday has faded away, but the food abideth.

Trey Popp, food writer for Philadelphia magazine, says that perhaps "Thanksgiving's transition from a prayerful holiday into a gluttonously secular one has something to do with the holiday's shift from a New England tradition into a national one, which came about when Lincoln declared it a national holiday during the Civil War."

Southern families initially didn't cotton much to the New England celebration, Popp says. "But Southerners do like a big supper, so maybe changing the focus to food made the holiday easier to swallow."

Over the years, Thanksgiving also became a time for merchants — think Macy's flashy parade — to sell everything. Including more food. Which brings us to the excessive American experience that is contemporary Thanksgiving.

Nearly 88 percent of Americans partake of turkey at Thanksgiving, according to Kelley Hower of the National Turkey Federation. In 2009 some 46 million turkeys — averaging 16 pounds apiece — were sacrificed to Thanksgiving. That means Americans consumed 736 million pounds of turkey — along with all the trimmings — at this time last year.

Let's take a look at a blogger's menu for Nov. 25. Here's the suggested 2010 "Classic Thanksgiving Menu" at AOL's KitchenDaily blog. It is described as "Nothing too fancy, nothing exotic, just really delicious recipes that your family and friends will love."

The roster lists 10 dishes: an olive oil and thyme basted roast turkey with herb stuffing and herbed gravy; cranberry relish; chive mashed potatoes; creamed onions; roasted Brussels sprouts and rosemary red onions; butternut squash wedges with maple butter; green beans with pecan brown butter; sweet potato gratin; bourbon pumpkin pie and apple pie.

Sounds like a beast of a feast. But what would you expect from a country where KFC's Double Down — an artery-clogging, bacon-and-cheese sandwich with a "bun" made of two fried chicken fillets — is extremely popular? And where state fairs have become incubators for deep fried everything: walleyes, Ho-Hos, butter sticks and beer?

Robert Jensen expects more out of America. A journalism professor at the University of Texas, Jensen has written several polemical pieces in the past few years calling for the end of Thanksgiving as we know it.

In the 2005 essay "No Thanks to Thanksgiving," Jensen writes that America could show the world true moral progress by replacing Thanksgiving Day "and its self-indulgent family feasting" with a National Day of Atonement and self-reflective collective fasting.

"I don't think it's strong enough to say we are tilting more and more toward excess," says Jensen today from his home in Austin, Texas. "I think U.S. society long ago went past a point of balance, both in ecological and cultural terms. We have built a world based on mindless consumption, premised on fantasies of endless abundance, all of which have been subsidized by vulnerable people around the world."

Jensen's dream itself may be extreme. But the hobbled economy could help make his dream come partially true. Harsh economic circumstances are forcing some Americans to scale back this year. A recent survey by First Command Financial Services states that "more families have less for Thanksgiving." About 40 percent of those questioned said they will be changing their holiday plans for 2010 because of economic reasons, and 20 percent said they will be cooking Thanksgiving dinner only for relatives.

Joe Cockrell, a media and marketing consultant in New York, told CNN Money this month that in the past he has invited 150 people to a Thanksgiving blowout. But not this year.

Thanksgiving was traditionally "a time to gather with friends before the crazy holiday season hits," Cockrell told CNN. "Last year it was complete with bartenders, catered food and a DJ."

Since last November, Cockrell has run into financial trouble. He had to sell his condominium. He told CNN that this year he is just having a few friends over for Thanksgiving and asking them to bring some of the comestibles. "We'll probably do board games," he said, "just kind of hang out."

Thanksgiving For One

When CNN Money asked Susie Coelho, a California lifestyle consultant and entertainment maven, about celebrating Thanksgiving in lean times, she said, "It's not cool to overdo things when people are suffering. And most people are suffering. ... People are concerned about their homes and their jobs."

For years, some Native Americans have felt that the rest of America overdoes — and overdoses on — Thanksgiving. Traditionally, a group congregates near Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts, where early settlers landed in the 17th century, each Thanksgiving to observe a National Day of Mourning.

Jensen feels pretty much the same way. He believes that America is squandering, not squirreling away, its abundant harvest. "I think we need a day of atonement rather than [of] thanksgiving," he says. "Before we can be truly thankful, we need to be honest."

And how will he spend Thursday, Nov. 25? "I plan to spend Thanksgiving alone," says Jensen. "I want to spend part of the day reading, and part of the day walking as far away from the city as I can get."

Maybe Jensen is at least headed in the right direction. In this world of economic uncertainty and diminishing resources, perhaps it would be more appropriate to glorify our inestimable national bounty with reverence rather than overindulgence. To cherish what we have rather than chowing down on it. To celebrate prudence rather than pigging out.

Or maybe there is a middle ground. In fact, the creator of the Thanksgiving Turkey Cake believes that she has found it. She believes Americans can have their cake and eat it, too.

Amy Wisniewski, associate food editor at CHOW.com, says her concoction may be the perfect solution "if you think about going to a Thanksgiving affair where half of your friends or family are unemployed and you really can't afford to do a huge spread, including an organic turkey or two with loads of side dishes, desserts and perfectly paired wines. So you whip up a turkey cake for a handful of people, crack a beer and call it a day."

And there you have it: excess and restraint rolled into one. Very layered. Very zeitgeist. Very American.

I have no time to plan, so the party on the 11th is the "shindig", but if you're (any of you) are bored this sunday, we could do something informal. I did buy a big barrel charcoal grill, so we could give it a dry run before the main event. I still need to put it together, though.

I woke up at 3am with a severe headache, drank some water & popped a couple ibuprofens, then got woken up again 2 hours later with what felt like an even worse headache. Seconds felt like hours so I got up and took a shower (those always seem medicinal in alleviating my hangover headaches) and finally managed to lose consciousness again around 6. Ugh. Left me with absolute zero desire to drink the rest of the weekend, which is uncommon.

If you ever need a mechanic to work on your car let me know, I've got an awesome guy who will come to your house and is really affordable. He's the only one I trust doing major repairs on our vehicles.

Dylan, catch some live clips of theirs. Apparently that's what got Ivy to appreciate them (at least to some degree; she's a better spokesperson for whether she actually likes them or not). And what'd you think of Interpol, by the way?

Everybody should go see Black Swan this weekend. I caught it with John & his friend last night and will be going again with Jennifer in the imminent future. It's Darren Aronofsky's best film, which is high praise in its own right. The sound design is ridiculous, Natalie Portman is terrific, it's surprisingly funny (especially Vincent Cassel), and it calls to mind the best of Roman Polanski's early work with how palpable the paranoia and tension are. I cannot recommend this enough.

Arcade Fire is great. New album is good.

My friend Tyler has never heard of them and gave me shit for saying that people think they are headlining Coachella. Now, I don't know if I fully believe they are headlining material, but I wouldn't throw a fit if they were headliners either.

But he seems to think because he's never heard of them then they don't deserve to headline...

I might also add that he spins trance music.

It took me a bit to get into them. I started listening in mid 2005 but man it took my grandparents deaths in 07' for it finally hit me like a ton of bricks.

In other words. Kill some relatives and start with Funeral. I also had trouble understanding the lyrics and once I did I found it much more enjoyable. I was not a fan of Neon Bible but I saw them twice on that tour and loved the one two punch of Power Out / Rebellion live.

I really hadnt heard of Arcade Fire before all the buzz about them here on the message board this year. The name name looked vaguely familar to me, but honestly I couldnt of told you what kind of music they were... After listening I see why I didnt know them. A little too emo/indie for my taste.
