Maybe they're better in a small club setting (or a small Coachella tent) as oppsed to a big arena....which tips the scale back to maybe.

I would say this statement is true for most but not all bands.

Ok, so where are people headed tonight. A lot was bantered about, but I didn't see a solidified choice. Working from home can have it's drawbacks...I need to get out and see the world!

Well, that's my other problem, I usually can't meet up until 10ish. I could probably make it out earlier tonight if you want to grab a drink at one of the centralized locations that've been discussed, Sean. Although, like you said, from the looks of it nobody has anything concrete going on, IMPROMPTU CENTRAL PHOENIX MEET UP!

This might work, as well. Only thing I have is I am dogsitting, and I can't leave them alone in my condo for too long. Was hoping to meet up for something happy hourish.

<---- first time appearances at Sun Up and The Swizzle Inn tonight. SUN UP WAS OUT OF THEIR VANILLA PORTER!!!!! The wings were good but that place had zero atmosphere whatsoever. The Swizzle Inn was great, reminded me of Ammacappanes (sp) up in north Phoenix which i use to frequent. Cheap stiff drinks with plenty of out of the hunt cougars waiting for wounded prey to stumble into their lap.

I liked Ratatat when I saw them open for Daft Punk in '07, enough to purchase Classics afterward. Maybe it was 'cause I was ~10 feet away from them?

09-11-2010, 04:34 PM
I saw RATATATAT open for Daft Punk in LA in 07. I was thoroughly unimpressed.

I saw RATATAT in Tucson at Club Congress in 2008 and they burned the house down.

I was at both these shows and agree with both of these statements.

Their sound seemed weak and lost in the Sports Arena, where as the CC show rocked and entertained me beyond expectation.

Rialto might file for Ch. 11 this week

The Rialto Theatre Foundation could file for bankruptcy protection as soon as this week as a way to head off eviction by the new Rio Nuevo Board.

The new board, which took over the Rialto and all of Rio Nuevo in March, put the Rialto on notice nearly two months ago that it was in default of the intergovernmental agreement between the Rialto, Rio Nuevo and the city of Tucson for not paying its bills.

The Rialto had 60 days to remedy the default, which Rio Nuevo says is about $200,000 in back rent and another $60,000 in facility restoration it says the Rialto has failed to do. The notice included the threat of eviction. Jeannine Mortimer, one of Rio Nuevo's lawyers, said the district board calculates that the 60-day period ends Saturday.

The Rialto Board will meet today to discuss how it will move forward, and it's possible the foundation could declare bankruptcy to stave off eviction.

Doug Biggers, the Rialto's executive director, declined to talk about the negotiations, although he acknowledged that the Rialto Foundation has discussed bankruptcy as a way to ward off eviction.

Michael Crawford, president of the board of the Rialto Theatre Foundation, said a final decision will be made this week. He said there was some movement in the negotiations Friday, and the Rialto hopes the issues can be worked out.

"If we do file for Chapter 11 protection, we'll give a detailed statement," Crawford said. "We're still trying to work it out before that occurs."

Crawford said the Rialto has offered to have the two sides engage in mediation or arbitration by a neutral third party, but Crawford said that so far, Rio Nuevo has refused. Rio Nuevo officials said the Rialto is one of the things about downtown that works, and they don't want to evict the foundation. But they said their task is to run Rio Nuevo like a business, and the Rialto hasn't lived up to its agreement.

"The Rio Nuevo Board is trying to look at everything in a businesslike manner, which was one of the criticisms of Rio Nuevo in the past," said Bob Gugino, the board's attorney. "We have made several proposals to the foundation on how to work it out. If you can't pay rent, are you really running a successful business and enterprise?"

Part of the dispute is over rent credits for a new sound system installed in the Rialto, which the live-performance venue contends should be used for credit. But Gugino said the agreement allows only for improvements to the building to count as rent credits.

Because the sound system can be taken out of the building, and because it was financed with credit and therefore could be repossessed, Rio Nuevo can't give credit for it, Gugino said. If the foundation had installed acoustic tile in the ceiling or walls, it would be a different story, he said.

He said the board already has credited the foundation with six months of free rent because the city documents showing when the theater should have started paying rent were confusing, Gugino said.

"I don't think they've been closely monitored" by the city, Gugino said. "The board is being quite reasonable in trying to negotiate this."

Rio Nuevo was taken over by the state Legislature amid outrage over the city's spending of $250 million downtown with little or nothing to show for it other than lots of plans, designs and stalled projects. Through all that, the Rialto Theatre has been seen as one of the things that have been successful downtown.

"I can't believe the district board is trying to kill the one thing that is succeeding downtown," said developer Jim Campbell, who owns the property next to the Rialto on East Congress Street.

Rio Nuevo Board Chair Jodi Bain said that either through omission or silence, the city had never dealt with these issues with the Rialto.

"It's kind of sad, but we have to have performing assets," Bain said. "To not act on a nonperforming asset doesn't look so hot, either."

Bain said the board has tried to tack some of the back rent onto the current rent and have it paid over a long time, such as five years. But she said the Rialto Foundation has said it would be forced into bankruptcy if it was forced to pay.

"Is it that dire that they can't pay a couple thousand dollars' rent?" Bain said. "The situation is very unfortunate. The Rialto is very important."

The Orpheum in Flagstaff almost went down last year, but they saved it at the last second.

It sucks, but, if they can't pay their rent, they aren't being "successful".

So Cox Communications was supposed to install a direct line from our house to the LAN since we are currently on a shared line. One of their techs comes out on Sept 1st and says he is unable to do the repair because they have to dig up the yard and street. Our yard is all tagged up with markings for utilities anyways since our neighbor is also getting work done by Cox. The tech calls in and says they will be out the following week and Cox will call us ahead of time to confirm. It didn't look like anyone had come out in the last couple weeks, and no one from Cox had called to confirm when they would be there. So I call their customer service line about 1 hour ago, and the 1st person I get is a complete idiot. I tell him what's going on and he says he needs to put me on hold for 3-5 minutes while he looks up my account. 15 minutes later I'm still on hold and decide to hang up and call back to see who else I might get. I finally get through to another tech, who is a bigger idiot than the 1st person. They tell me the line was installed on Sept 2nd. I ask, "Are you sure? Because a tech came out on the 1st and said they would need to dig up the yard and street." The tech responds, "Yeah", in a very unconvincing manner. I ask her again, she says, "Yeah". I say, "Okay, cool." I know they haven't been out there to do the install since my wife is at home on maternity leave and would know if someone dug up the yard and street while I was at work. So I'm going to have to call them again. God dam, I am going to rip my hair out dealing with their customer service.

Update, so I called Cox when I got home from work yesterday. They are sending another tech out to verify they have to repair the line out in the street. So annoying since the last tech that came out said that's what they had to repair, but never scheduled anyone to come back out the following week. The customer service rep said my next door neighbor was getting their line dug up today, but they couldn't coordinate to repair our line at the same time? What??!!!

I have no idea, so there's supposed to be a tech coming out today between 1pm-3pm. Last time we scheduled for the same block and he showed up at 3:30pm. So annoying. I think one of the problems with Cox is that they sub out almost all their tech and repair work, where as Qwest employs most of their techs and does their own work.

Putting in an application on a house today...just off Ray between Cooper and McQueen (AKA Stapley & Mesa Drive). It will be an excellent party house...big living/kitchen area, lots of patio space in the back, and a hot tub. If everything works out, we'll have to put together something in the fall on a day most of you can come.

14-year-old Surprise boy
burned in grilling accident dies

by Tessa Muggeridge and Lisa Halverstadt - Sept.
20, 2010 11:16 AM
The Arizona Republic

A Surprise teen who sustained severe burns
after a grilling accident has died.

A Maricopa County Medical Center
spokesman said Oscar Fuentes, 14, passed
away Sunday after about a week of treatment
in the facility's burn center.

Dr. Kevin Foster, one of the surgeons caring
for Oscar, said about 85 percent of the
teen's body had been burned.

Surprise firefighters said Oscar was grilling
at his home near 178th Avenue and Deer
Valley Road on Sept. 13 when he doused the
grill with gasoline in an attempt to light the
barbecue.

The gasoline vapors around the boy ignited
almost immediately and he was engulfed by
fire, said Kevin Pool, assistant fire chief in
Surprise.

Medics rushed the teen to the Maricopa
Medical Center by helicopter. He was sedated
and breathing through a tube because of
burns inside his mouth. The boy's uncles,
Juan and Luis De La Torre, said during a
press conference last week that they were
relying on love, unity and prayer as they
rallied around Oscar.

They described their nephew as mellow,
quick-witted and loving.

I'm thinking about getting A Perfect Circle tickets (the 3 day pass). But I won't be making it to the first of the three nights. If I miss the first night, will my ticket be there for the following two shows? Normally I would think that it would be but what I read from Mark about his interaction with the guy at the box office is a bit off putting. that's quite a large table for four peaks. whoever gets there first should ask for 8 then, or at least two tables in the same area. i have a team meeting some asshat scheduled for friday afternoon that may go later than 4, but i am planning to leave at 4 since it's on my calendar that i'm leaving at 4.

and jason, i just meant fucked with will call if you don't show up. my friend had nin tickets at the marquee in 2005 and couldn't go because of a family obligation. he couldn't sell the tickets (which were going for hundreds of dollars) because of the will call thing. but i've never seen a multi-day pass there, so who knows how that works.

yeah, they'll only release the tix to the cardholder or with state id. but they did allow me to write a note releasing my tix to dave along with a photocopy of my drivers license and he was able to pick up tix under my name. i forget what show it was, but it wasn't as big as NIN. they might have required i show up to get since the NIN tix were such coveted tix.

Our local newspaper has been doing some serious investigative journalism lately.

You can't get pregnant from touching a restaurant statue

Today's question:

A friend of mine has been trying to get pregnant with no success. We heard about a restaurant in Mesa that has a fertility statue. When a woman touches it, she gets pregnant. We haven't been able to find any information on said restaurant. Have you heard about it?

No, I haven't heard of it and although I did make a cursory search, I am not inclined to pursue this matter.

Look, if you really are your friend's friend, I think you need to sit down with her and explain that she can't get pregnant by touching a statue in a restaurant.

Perhaps she doesn't know this, but, with a few variations, the only way she is going to get pregnant is by … umm … the standard method.

If you are uncomfortable with this, perhaps you could find a helpful illustrated book for her at your local library. Libraries are useful that way.

no it's ok, but thanks for offering. it's for tomorrow (black keys) anyways. i drove around looking for a plastic one last night, but found that they were all pretty big. i don't know what security is like at the soma in san diego and if they'd check our purses or something. so instead i just got us mini-bottles of vodka which will be easier to smuggle. we're not going to want to get piss drunk or anything, but several hours at a non-alcohol serving venue requires that we sneak SOMETHING in ;)

I know the feeling, usually the Friday before a 3 day weekend or the day before a major holiday my employer lets us out at 2pm instead of 5pm. And there's always some jerk who schedules a meeting that day at 1:30pm for an hour that always runs late.

yeah, you really can't go wrong with any SURFboard.

the main thing you want from a modem is to ensure it supports DOCSIS3.0. that enables it to utilize IPv6 to its full potential and has other cool items such as allowing multiple up/down channels.

Since this board consists of about half of my Phoenix friends (and 80% of the ones who might actually show up for a party), I figured I would consult here on a date. It kind of needs to be a Saturday. 9th is too soon, some of you are going to Flagstaff on the 16th (I might go too), 23rd is Jonsi, 30th will be competing with 60,234 halloween parties, and Nov 6th is the day after Rick and Jen's wedding. the main thing you want from a modem is to ensure it supports DOCSIS3.0. that enables it to utilize IPv6 to its full potential and has other cool items such as allowing multiple up/down channels.

So I picked up a new modem Saturday which allows DOCSIS3.0 and IPv6. I have it hooked up to a Belkin Wireless N Router.. The router has a built in firewall which I have turned off. From experience, if I turn the firewall security on in the router, will this significantly slow down the speed of my internet connection? The firewall is part of the router's firmware, not a standalone program on any of the networked computers. I guess I can turn the firewall on and see what happens.

sin213

The router is fairly new, about 1 year old, maybe a little older. Since I bought the new modem and Cox worked on our cable line, I have seen a huge increase in speed. I never turned the router's firewall on prior to getting this new modem, I was just wondering from you and others how much of a drop in download speed should I expect if I turn the firewall on?

sin213
10-04-2010, 01:35 PM
a hardware firewall should be faster than a software based firewall. but the windows firewall is easier to work with/configure. so its really your call.

if you have the windows firewall on, you probably wont need to enable your router one.

Thanks for the help, I'm going to try turning on the router firewall and see what happens to our network's speed. The main thing I'm worried about is the firewall slowing down Netflix instant streaming.

sin213
10-04-2010, 01:51 PM
the other thing you can do is try to configure your firewall. you can set "exceptions" that will allow all inbound or outbound traffic to/from certain destinations. you'd be best seaching google for "belkin {model#} configure firewall" for instructions on how to do that.

When I worked at Burton Barr Library, this entitled prick threatened to sue me because I wouldn't let him check out (he had fines on his card). Told me that he was an important lawyer, and "personal friends with the AG", and I didn't know who I was messing with. I still didn't let him check out.

Ha, not exactly, I've just got a good bullshit detector. I got crap like that all the time when I was working in the public library. You wouldn't believe how much of a fuss people will put up over a 20 cent fine. I've had books and videos thrown at me, and I had to have people trespassed from the building for threatening me. People usually think that working in a library is quiet and boring... they have no idea.

I used to live at 52nd St. and Van buren and on 52nd St. between Van Buren and McDowell. Never had any problems. Then again I don't consider hookers walking through our complex or helicoptors every weekend a problem. I consider that action! I lived there from 2000 - 2003. I would live there again too.

Where I live now at 44th st. and baseline we've had a pizza guy get shot about a year ago so Dominos no longer delivers to our complex, I had my car broken into once and the stereo stolen, some fires in other buildings in our complex. The rest is just stories. I heard kids talking about guns an knives all over the place but I have never seen any. I'm never afraid to sit outside or use the pool either. I like my complex because we have a diverse community. I love it. Indians, blacks, mexicans and even jews and native indians!

locachica73
10-05-2010, 02:23 PM
It doesn't matter where you live anymore. I use to live in Chandler in a pretty nice complex and watched as the SWAT team came out and bust my neighbors, apparently a husband stabbed his wife and barricaded himself in the house, once they finally got in they found they had 20 or so relatives living with them so they brought out the immigration people. Good times.

Then when I lived out in Mormon land in a brand new house we had a murder suicide on one corner and a gramma who had a meth lab in her house on the other.

There is good and bad in every neighborhood. I prefer to have my bad be up front and in my face than hidden quietly behind nice picket fences.

I.F.A.
10-05-2010, 02:32 PM
You've had people trespassed? How does that work exactly?

I.e. either temporarily or permanently barred from entering the building, depending on the severity of what they did, and whether or not they were repeat offenders. It didn't happen terribly frequently, and usually it was for kids who were caught vandalizing or trying to steal CDs or something, and then they'd be trespassed for like a year (or, for lesser infractions, they'd lose their computer privileges for a certain period of time, since most of them were mainly there to use the computers anyway).

But sometimes we'd have pervs caught masturbating in the stacks or something, or someone would threaten/continually harass/stalk the staff to such a degree that made it necessary to have them permanently nixed. Security staff handled it and, if they got rowdy and wouldn't leave, occasionally the police. All public libraries have policies and procedures in line to deal with "problem" patrons.

We were lucky to have a permanent security staff on guard, as a lot of libraries don't because they're not budgeted for it. In which case it's a lot harder to deal with stuff like that.

Back in my home town, Lansing the south suburbs of Chicago my mom and many friends have moved away because it's turning "black".

What year is this? Cook county is pretty much 50/50 white/black so i'm not sure why everyone keeps running but more importantly why other than racism? :nono

Then again this is a town where ingorance is bliss. My high school T.F. South embraced the rebel cause and flew the rebel flag up until 1994 (the year after I graduated). Had a rebel fighter as it's mascot as well and tried to justify it all with the term "tradition". All in the land of lincoln. In cook county not rural southern illinois either. When I went to the school it was less than 20% black. Now it's over 50%.

Even more interesting to me is the school was opened in 1958. Who would have thought in a Chicago suburb in 1958 it would be a good idea to embrace the rebel flag as the school flag and the entire southern rebel theme? Well, an all white school of course. There is still a lot of racial tension in that town. That's what a lot of whites have done though. They moved from neighborhood to neighborhood to be with "their own". It's just surprising to me that this is still going on 2010 and the irony of it being in such a melting pot of a city.

Might as well call the team "The Slave Drivers". It's like schools that use Indians as mascots and pull the "tradition" card - I just don't get it. "Tradition" is quite frequently fucked up and oppressive - maybe we could actually like, evolve into a more open and equal society that celebrates not objectifying and stereotyping classes of people by making them mascots for our sports teams, and leave the racist "traditions" behind. Or something? It's a crazy idea, I know.

About 8 years ago I flew to Vegas with a couple co-workers and one of them was able to score 4 beers during the short flight. He was able to get one as he boarded, one during the drink service then pressed the button once and finally as she was collecting garbage and we were starting to descend he asked for one last one which she refused but he pulled out a $20 and said it was hers if she gave him one. She took the $20 and said you better drink it fast and handed him the beer as landing gear came down. He slammed it and spilled a bit on himself.

We ended up losing him at the airport. Found him at a craps table where he was doing shots. He got lost again after losing $800 in the first 2 hours there. He didn't have his room key so he passed out in the hallway in front of his room at the Luxor. Security called the cops and the cops drove him to the airport and left him there. He finally figured out how to use his phone at 1am and was picked up and stayed with some other friends at a differenct casino for 2 nights...broke of course. I never heard of the cops kicking someone out of town by taking them to the airport before. Good times. Love Vegas.

i went to vegas one NYE with a big group of friends. a lot of us were on the same flight. many of us were partying before the flight:

http://ivy.aholic.us/gallery/d/583360-2/plane_madness.jpg

some of us, were a little too drunk though. the guy sitting next to me (incidentally a casual board member) kept holding both arms, straight up in the air like we were on a roller coaster. he was saying shit like "WEEEEEEEEE!". and then saying things like "THIS IS CAPTAIN IVYSAUR SPEAKING" and laughing his head off.

a girl in the other row kept being super loud, swearing and laughing a lot. just before we landed, a guy turned around and told her "I'M SICK OF YOUR CRAP!". which just made her laugh more.

when we got to the airport, me and another guy kept saying "let's play the quiet game" because everyone was so rowdy. here is what the girl did when we got to the hotel:

I get political calls on my cell. I heard you can re-register without your phone number to skip out on the phone calls I just haven't done it yet.

You're lucky. I get at least 1 call per day close to elections. You must have been smart and not written your phone number down on your registration form.

i don't have a home phone. i stopped getting calls from the symphony once i told them i didn't plan to buy anything from them as i don't have time and plan to only buy at the spur of the moment.

i also FINALLY stopped getting united blood calls like earlier this year or something. i told 80 million people to stop calling me and it never worked. i had to get bitchy with someone's manager for it to finally stop.

Yeah, it was amateur hour last time I donated blood. Never again.

I never answer my home phone (unless I know someone is calling me). I only use it to call out. I only have it because I get it for free.
